Help! Nervous Habits!

Kroliczek

New member
I notice that from time to time I am biting excessively on my lips...I mean to the point where they are bleeding / are almost bleeding. I also notice that I go through periods where I am constantly peeling my hangnails off (causing them to bleed).

I don't know why I do this. I would say that I go through these periods only a few times a year. There is no pattern to my behavior (that I can realize myself). This is why I am asking you all for guidance.

Why do I do this? Massochism? Does anyone else do this?

Thanks!

I can't answer your question but have you considered chewing a large wad of gum?
It might keep your mouth busy.

When I'm drawing I lick my lips which leaves them dry and chapped so the gum keeps the tongue where it belongs.

:D

I LOVE to chew gum...but I always end up swallowing it! (only one interpretation here, please)

I think that by chewing gum I am only skirting the issue,if there even is one. I would like to get to the root!

Nervous bad habits are hard to break. You are proably doing it when your thinking really hrd about something and you totally lose track of what you are doing to yourself

are u my sister?

My cousin used to bite her nails, so she put this disgusting tasting nail polish on specifically for that I think. It may have worked.

Does`nt really help you but my post count is going up. lol jk

It is hard to break these habits. If you`re very serious about breaking them, I would suggest a hypnotist or a therapist. Seriously. I doubt highly that you can do it yourself by willing yourself not to do it. Good luck though.

A response to anxiogenic stimuli or a lack of observable stimuli could induce this seemingly involuntary behavior. Assess the cause and employ conscious behavioral response that is potentially more productive and make it habitual (reinforcement, behavioral therapy) :o
There is of course a host of 'substance' alternatives to counter this type of behavior and its incidence.

I'm not sure but I think juve just told you to get high and start masturbating

Already do it / have done it / will do it in the future.

Oh well. I guess I have to have stronger will power!

I don't know about the lip thingy, but I must keep my nails cut short, otherwise, they are torn to shreds.

PEACE
Booger...

Juve is spot-on correct with his analysis.

Not sure you understood what he said though, here's the breakdown:

Make a conscious effort to remember what it is that is on your mind when you start engaging in these behaviours. What thoughts, activities, mindstate are you in when you find yourself biting your nails, biting your lips etc.? Pin down the stimulus and you can deal with the problem effectively. There's a rhyme and reason to why you do it, that I promise you, Kro-Kro.

I have the exact same habits - lip biting and finger munching, among other things. I think it's part neuroses, part boredom, part oral fixation, and part bad habit.

I recommend ephedrine in doses of 50-75mg/day for these nervous habits.

completely kidding, dont do that!

that was the most inelegant load of gratuitously clinic terminology I've seen on this board in a while.

In purely psychological clinical terms he's 100% correct.

I admire that in Juve.........his ability to break it down so readily like a mathmatician cracking digits on the DL.

He's pure.......gotta love that shit.

Yeah. I think you two are correct.
I think that I have a way of internalizing stress. I DEFINITELY notice that I am only doing this at certain times in the year! There has to be a pattern.

I noticed that this happens a lot when I am eating clean: on a cutting diet.

HMMM.

I used to bite my nails when I was younger...I stopped doing that.
