Help: Carrying your passport in Mexico?

It might sound weird but carrying a gun in mexico is illegal. So is having a knife blade more than I think 6 inches. The fine for just a knife can be $500 i know because i had to come bail my buddy out for this.

Long time international traveller here...

Always keep your passport in the hotel safe. If travelling in dodgy areas, keep a certified copy of the important info pages (picture page and visa page/stamp) on your person.

They issue ccw licenses to locals and even foreigners but you need a damn good reason and/or being wealthy/know the right people. They have caliber restrictions My associate went there a few years ago to represent a firearm's compaby. He was making demos for a few PD's out there in order to sign contracts so of course, he had to carry around a case with 3-4 assault rifles and yes, they issued a CCW to him (he has one in Canada already). So maybe Mightymouse qualifies as a wealthy guy ?

In the event that an application is denied, the denial may theoretically be appealed at a District Court, but this never occurs in practice. Prior to 2002, CCW licenses could be obtained authorizing military caliber pistols. However, these CCW licenses were all cancelled, and re-issued to authorize only up to .380 ACP caliber pistolas."

Thanks, yes Merida is the Yucatan Capital (you probably know) I'll take in the sites too while I'm there. Then I am catching a flight from there to Mexico City. I'm flying cheap class and it is still 1800 US from Boston, getting expensive out there. Feel free to PM me any other info you think I should have.

Not sure, flying cheap class, I think its both the fuel pricing and strength of the US dollar.

Hotel isn't cheap anymore either
