Compaq makes very solid equipment bfold.

Alienware is high end gamer land...I salivate over some of their stuff and my wife just shakes her head and calls me a nerd.

don't buy a compaq. completely proprietary systems. don't expect to have expansion slots to upgrade, and if u ever have problems with it, you'll most likely have to ship it back to compaq, or find someone authorized to work on a compaq to fix it. personally i'd just order parts and build your own. http://www.tigerdirect.com

ebay.... lots of small time vendors use ebay to sell thier computers. the components are the same pretty much as the big boys, but the price is cheaper. they use ebay as their web front-end to save costs of having their own website and payment processing..... and as they say that savings is passed down to the consumer. for your budget this is the way to go.

Dell. Compaq, Gateway are ok if all you wanna do is surf the net. heh Anyone who is computer savvy would tell you to steer clear of those brands.

Build your own.

If you can't do it yourself, buy the parts and have them installed by the service technician at the shop you get your parts from. You'll save $$$$ and get EXACTLY what you want.

do not buy a compaq laptop unless you want
an expensive target skeet...

complete junk...

mine and three other peoples have all failed this semster...

all adult students, who took care of them and maintained
them properly...

poor customer service, chips made outta donkey shite...

if a laptop, get a sony vaio, trust me...

DELL, COMPAQ, No name... In that order IMO..
I do not care for Gateway. Poor support.

Dell does mail order build to spec the best.
Compaq, Toshiba, DELL make good laptops.
Dell seems to offer the most bang for the buck. Volume

No name as mentioned use some of the same components but
you have to be carefull and buyer beware with some.

Also No Name may not be as supportive if you have a problem or
question about the system after the sale. If you know computers
and don't need support, that is the best route.

www.spartantech.com is a company i use. Have been for the last 6 years they. They sell all top notch stuff and pricese are good. If you hvae them build you a computer they charge $85 for a build 1 year warranty parts and Labor. There no big Dell type of company but there tech are real good and they help out the best they can on Tech issues. Don't get me wrong not all computer problems can be done on phone but they stand by there work.

I also use a company called PcProgress www.pcprogress.com there a good company also.

Well, I want a PC that I can upload and work with my video (for my training), surf the net, handle some adobe programs (pics and stuff), etc... That is about all that I do. I have a PIII 500, 128 megs, 19 Gigs right now...and I just wish that I could run a larger Windows (98 right now) for the video options.

If I had about $700-1000 to use towards a computer (I already have a good monitor, printer, etc...) could I make a pretty solid home PC with the needed options that I want?

Thanks
