HDTV suggestions...

I'm in the market for a HDTV. Looking for one 50' or larger. Would anyone recommend widescreen HDTV over regular view. And what brands would someone recommend? I'm currently looking at either Toshiba or Sony...

Sony is the best. Widescreen is also the future.

2Thick, do you ever fantacize that you are a great debator, or a very knowledgable person? Just kidding man. I admire people who strive to attain knowledge. The world needs more of them.

I just discovered digital cable.

The 5 year old Toshiba and Pro Scan 600 resolution TV is clearer and crisper than the year old Plasma/HDTV monitor on DSS at work and just as clear as the 50" Panisonic HDTV monitor I saw at PC Richards.

Just something to think about.

The picture you get on the TV is only as good as the source that it's coming from.

i have a 43" hitachi wide screen and it great!! i wanted bigger but it just wouldnt look right in my condo. i have seen them all and sony, hitachi and pioneer seem to be the best.

HDTV is going to be the next big laser-disk fiasco.

Almost no shows broadcast via it.

Save your cash and get a plasma screen.

Oh my God I still have my Ol' Pioneer Laser Disc Karaoke player. Didnt use it in 5 years......

Laser-Disc, BETA tape, 8 tracks, DCC audio tapes, .......... lol

it is a catch 22 - nobody broadcasts to it because not enough people will watch it (meaning, there aren't enough sets out there that can make use of it).
and there aren't enough sets out there to view it on because they don't feel there are enough things to watch on it.

usually to overcome these sorts of deals, one of the sides has to give the other side money to get the ball rolling and just hope that they recoup the money in future sales.

right now the sports games, especially big ones like the super bowl, are done in hdtv - because they have deals setup where people will rent the tvs for just that event (many stores like Tweeter have it setup so that it is easier to get there than it is to get back in hopes that people will just go ahead and buy it on a long term installment plan - meaning high interest)

sony just now - or a few days ago - officially stopped supporting beta.
I'm not sure who was still using it - but I would assume something in the tv industry since there isn't enough money in the residential world to keep that going as long as it did

So aside from the SuperBowl and other big bowling events, you're stuck watching 4 TV shows....some of which you may not like simply to get your money's worth from your TV set.

admit it - if any of the shows that you can get had Scott Baio on them, you would be all over it.

Is there such a thing as a large screen plasma television even? HDTV's aren't all that expensive in my opinion. For under $3,000 I can get a 57" widescreen from sony. Not bad in my opinion even if hdtv never pans out. I guess we'll wait and see...

yes they're some. I think Panasonic has one 50" or something like that, Plasma. But it costs around 7000$..........

I would only go for HDTV if you own a progressive scan DVD player and watch alot of DVD's. That makes it worth it.

Otherwise, I think HDTV will prove to be a fad/failure in the end. If you do buy the TV, the technology will be outdated by the time HDTV is supported on most channels.

This is exactly why I bought mine. About two months ago I got the 53" Sony HDTV 1080i Widescreen. LOVE IT. But I watch the hell out of DVD's instead of tv.

That's what I have my tv for mainly. I really don't watch much broadcast television besides court tv, the discovery channel, and TLC.

Here's a question though. What makes HDTV different from any technology that's going to come out in the future? Why will HDTV fail and something else thrive. After all HDTV is already here and provides a picture quality that is amazing already...

CBS does their college "A" game every week in high-def, as well as ever major bowl game for college b-ball, and football. ABC is going to be doing monday night football in high def for every game this year I think, and the MSG network produces ALL of their live sporting events in HDTV.

Just some info for you all.

later,
bern
