has anyone used EPO?

I was wondering if anybody has tried EPO, and if they did what they used it for -- i.e. mass, definition, etc. I have the chance of getting some and getting paid to use it for a study at a lab and I was wondering if it is worth it, or if it will do only harm. I know what it does, but I also realize that there are no real long-term studies for health effects when it is used in large quantities.

If you can use it in controlled lab conditions go for it. It will improve vascularity, and cardio will become easier for you.

Hi mellow - EPO is big in the endurance sports such as cycling. You will see some pro riders that do it. It is also called blood doping. The Tour de France is a long race (over 2000 miles) which you need a lot of aerobic oxygen to sustain the large mountain climbs. EPO is thought to help with this since it increases your RBC's which is a component that carries Oxygen. For bodybuilding, I doubt it would be great help to you. The only help would be you might be able to do more reps in a set before the burn set in (this is lactic acid from lack of oxygen). EPO, or erythropoietin, is a hormone naturally produced by the body but now it is genetically engineered. EPO artificially increases the level of red blood cells and therefore enhances aerobic capacity. I guess if you intend to do more aerobic activity, then it would help. The old way of doing this way by giving blood twice a week for 4-6 weeks and then right before a race, you get the blood "spinned down" or separated and inject just the RBC's back into your body. When giving blood, your body will produce more blood components in it's place, hence more RBC's. You would be back at your normal level, then by injecting your RBC's (from the blood given earlier), you would thus increase your total RBC's, which would allow you to carry more O2 in your system to your muscles. I really do not see much benefits in bodybuilding and it can be dangerous. I hope this helps you. If it does, positive karma is always welcome my way! Geoff

Mellow - I must have misread your question a little. Anyway, since you know what it does - I will stick with the basis of your question. It can be dangerous by overloading your body such as in the Tour de France. However, since this would be in a controlled enviroment such as a lab study, then I would see no real harm. You might be lifting weight, but nothing compared to the extremes of bicycle racing in the TDF. You should know, if you do not already know, that if this is a study, then they will likely want to test your V02 Max which is how much aerobic and anaerobic oxygen you can sustain. Which means - the use of a treadmill or stationary bicycle. You could be burning a lot of calories - which is not necessarily what you want for bodybuilding. I mean we are talking out of breath and balls to the max aerobic exercise before and after taking EPO. I would imagine that is what they are studying (effects of EPO). Hope this helps! Geoff

thanks for the good info...definitely sounds like it would be good for cutting down quickly, but I was also wondering if I eat enough could it be helpful for increasing size, kind of like a creatine effect without the water weight and instead just pure muscle because of getting more oxygen to the blood, but counteracting the wieght loss from the EPO by eating a ton...I read some online articles describing gains of 20 pounds of lean muscle in like six weeks...any ideas on this?...thanks a lot

EPO will not increase lean body mass... also, it can kill you.

Has the potential to make your blood the consistency of jelly... mmmmm.

A few cyclists have died from this stuff over the past few years.

dude if its for endurance use B-12 shots and eq for the increase in RBC its the closest if not the same as epo as far as endurance
