Has anyone bought a large format printer???

I am trying to buy an Epson 3000 which prints at 17x22". It weighs about 50 pounds and sells new for about $1,000.

They sell on ebay for 100 to 800 dollars. As you can imagine, claims, condition, and options vary widely.

I'm a little tempted to buy a cheap unit from a surplus liquidator. It might work fine. If not, such is life.

They have a projected life of 70,000 pages I think. Absolutely no way to know if a unit has really been used hard.

Ideas?

I'm in Graphic design so I've delt with quite a few printers. The one you're looking at is basically an oversized desktop printer. Plus the oversized ones don't really do as well of a job as the small ones.

Best thing is just have your shit printed at a commerical printer. Not Kinkos but some one who does oversize lazer prints.

But then again, if you could get it for $100 then I say go for it.

Is this a plotter for CAD or a photo printer that uses roll paper?

Damn thing attracted 17 bids this morning and sold for $255 with absolutely no assurance that it works. All the seller said is that it looks good and powers up. No cords or software or anything. Did not seem like a deal at that price.

I see this happen at auctions though. An item will float into the last hour with a low price and attract flocks of giddy bidders. They beat each other up and the item winds up selling for twice what the item that was not underpriced did.
