1. My best friend died at 16. Lesson learned: be the best friend you can. Make the effort to preserve friendships. You'll be glad you did.
2. The military. Lesson learned: Big world out there. Not everyone is like you. And not everyone likes you. Or us. Or U.S.
3. Kelly. A whirlwind of drugs, kids, engagement, disengagement, love, anger, and ultimately, growth. I am hoping now only that she is happy, and thankful for our time together. I am a much better person for having known her and about her life. I don't want her back, I just want her happy. I thank her for all I learned, difficult though it was. Lesson learned: what you think is hard, is nothing. What you think is shitty, is everything to someone.
4. The Emperor. Without his patience, intelligence, and kindness, I could have never grown to be the person I am today. Lesson learned: With a clear head and good heart, your efforts can enable you to transcend the temporal structures that limit and bind people. Without those, all your hard work is for nothing. He has changed many lives for the better, but I alone have been given the opportunity to do the same.
