Happy St. Joseph's Day!!!

I know 99.999% of you have no clue what this day is, even Italians not from where I am from. But nonetheless, this was always a huge day for me and the area I grew up in. Everybody dresses in red and picks up zeppoli at the bakery. The bakeries in RI stay open the night before St. Joseph's Day baking zeppoli to have enough for today.

A little info on the day:

hey Killah, can you explain to me the difference between the Italians from the peninsula and the Sicilian Italians? I never understood why its getting separate and not say just "Italian" instead of "I'm Sicilian".

To be honest, Fg - I don't know. It seems like it has been like that over here for a while. I'm sure there are a lot of reasons tha tgo back decently far in history (a subject I am very ignorant with).

:( I just wanted to get a point of view from a italian person on that. I have one friend that his dad came here from Rome and he has no problem saying he is Italian. On the other hand, my sister-in-laws husband says specificaly that he is Sicilian and he looks like a latino, totally different from the guy from Rome :worried:

I never heard of St. Josephs, but just asked my mother about it and she started going off on a 15 minute story...so happy St. Joseph's day nonetheless.

SuperQT's reply was pretty much the difference in a nutshell. Mainlaind Italians are lighter while Sicilians are darker. Mom's telling me how Sicilians are oftentimes shunned to a certain degree and thought less of by mainlaind Italians. My family is from Naples and Rome, but I don't give shit where you're from. If you're Italian, you're Italian.

KB, what part of Italy is your family from?

The Moore's invaded Sicily back in the day and the Moore's are black and they prodreated with the Sicilians which is why people make remarks about Sicilians being part black (true to a certain extent but who cares and it was so long ago, that the blood lines are now watered way down). I have relatives from both Italy and Sicily and I always thought Sicily was a different country. Isnt it? Which would also explain why those from Sicily are not referred to as ItaliaNs

brb more coffee cake

I know why are they darker, I just didnt know why mainland italians separated them. But thanks SMURFY :) for explaining that better
