Had a long chat with my dad tonight

I wish my dad could hear worth a damn. I'd love to talk to him without having to travel 2000 miles. As it is, I just talk to my mom and anything I need to tell him directly, I tell her to tell him. I love my dad. He's a great man. He's 90, his health is failing fast, and he doesn't have too much time left. I will miss him terribly when he's gone. I'm sorry everyone can't have that.

I talk lots with my old man, but never serious contemporary stuff like religion / politics etc (He's in his 60s so totally different generation / outlook), usually just about hiking, past global conflicts (he's a big history buff) & general trivial / joking around.

lestat posting someting "self indulgent"? whowuddathunkit?

Sorry this is a completely self indulgent post.

So my dad is 57 (I'm 31) and we chat a couple times a month or so. We usually don't talk too much religion or politics. Believe it or not, if we avoid those topics, we agree on most everything. I have his strong work ethic, logical mind, and sense of humor.

He's also VERY religious, got caught up in the born again movement of the late 70s and 80's.

So today we talked about a ton of stuff. Gun control, abortion, morality, slavery, muslims, homosexuals, and more! Here are some points he drove home.

1) US slave owners didn't treat slaves as well as the media portrays. They treated them as valuable property and did not want to harm them in any way.
2) The feminist movement undermined modern society just as many other social reforms undermined other great powerful societies. He doesn't think women are equal, they are obviously not as physical strong, which even today, is important. They have certain aptitudes and general tendencies and opinions that are rarely shared with men.
3) Abortion is wrong. The whole "controversy" isn't anyting more than man's guilty and trying to justify selfish behavior. Discarding any fertilized embyos, such as in a fertility clinic, is wrong as well.
4) Capital punishment is warranted after due process though
6) Humans have a purpose on this earth and a divine plan. When we deviate from it and serve our own self interest's, things go wrong for everyone.
7) In 4 generations Mexicans will be the most common "race" in the U.S.
8) People are not animals and its fundamentally wrong to equate them to animals in any way. We are allowed by God to eat them, but forbidden from abusing them.
9) Guns make innocent people safer. Its the criminals that are for gun control to take them out of the hands of the law abiders that will defend themselves. Its a God given right to own one.

It was quite the talk. I caught a couple of Bill O'reilly catch phrases in there too.

Interesting... I agree with your Dad on almost everything except the woman and abortion points. I think women are different but equal and am pro-choice in the first trimester. Your dad is only a bit over 7 years older than me though.

I wish my dad was here to talk to. He's been dead since '91. My parents were divorced when I was 8 but my dad was my best friend until he died. My step dad is a great guy too and we talk almost every week.

It is great you can talk with your Dad, even if it's not always an "eye to eye" conversation. My Dad has never been able to have serious conversations. They generally turn to something trivial.

Oddly enough I agree with him for the most part. The biggest being his view on the wimenz. Don't let your opinions ruin the relationship though, it's priceless.

There are very few people that I respect more than my father.
My only regret is that I was not able to serve him in anyway. He died when I was in college.
The most indedpendent person I have seen in my life. NEVER accepted help from anyone.
To maintain his independence, he wore THE CHEAPEST clothes and ate the simplest food.
He was sick and we were coming back from the doctor. I realized that he was dizzy and was going to fall, and put my arm around him to support him.
He threw away my arm with anger, and said 'My God is enough for me'. He sat down on the ground till he recovered his energy and we walked back hom.

that's my take on those topics too, except #3, I'm more liberal than that. He may be right, but that's not my take on it. Your dad sounds like an interesting guy...

I have worked w/ my dad for the last 18 years, he sits right behind me. He's 80 now, glad to have these years together.
