hack squats?

today was leg day and my partner couldnt make it so i did it myself, but because i am still learning, i didnt wanna do my squats without a spotter etc.

so i thought id try the squat machine, and it said hacksquats on it.

i had no idea how i was supposed to do it, or even get it off the rest thing, so i just stood there for like 5 minutes reading the instructions on it but not comprehending...

finally i was like fuckit, and did them and figured it out...i loaded up the weight i normally use for squats, and it kept not being enough, and i kept adding and adding thinking okay, this will be enough, and ending up doing way more reps with them.

finally i had 3 plates and then some on each side and realized i had fucked up my squat sets, and that it was more like a standing legpress :worried:

so whats the deal with these hacksquats? is it a legpress, or is it a squat? and whats a good weight for them (in comparison to squats vs legpress)
 
Its a squat machine/ hack squat.....

squating you walkin in the thing forwards..
hack squat (more for hamstrings) you turn around in it backwards so your facing out of it

Ya you can really load up the weights in those things... the last time i did it... last year I think we were doing like 6 or 7 plates on a side. I wish i could do that for Reg Squats!!

Hack squats are for the quads. The machine places the weight directly above your hips, which means there is no torque around the hip. On the other hand, the weight is placed far from the knees (in the transverse plane), which means there is great torque around the knee joint.

What this means in english is that since there is more torque around the knee joint, the knee extensors are doing most of the work, taking the emphasis off the hip extensors.

So they're not really like a squat...more of an isolation exercise for the quads.

I try. I'm in the middle of writing a paper, so I'm in my "intellectual" mode right now. It's not gonna last too much longer, cuz I'm BEAT! I'll get back to my usual inane blathering in a little bit ;)
 
always have done hacks near the end of the workout, so you dont have to load so much weight
bb hacks are another option
 
am i the only one who finds the burn from hack squats to be the most painful exercise..thats the only machine that can reduce me to tears..lol

Leg extensions fuck me up pretty good...I go REALLY slow on them, by number 12 I'm about ready to kill myself.

And D3...are BB hacks just regular hack squats (without the machine)? If so, those things kick ass.

weirdly enough the only exersise that actually BURNS me to the point of saying "ahh fuck" is my last set of leg extensions...lol
 
So would it be good to switch between squats and hack squats. I've been focussing on squats for about a year and have added some size, but mostly to my hams and ass. I stretched marked the fuck out of my upper glutes, but quads didn't grow that much. I'm over 6' and only 193, so I have pretty skinny legs.

try front squats
