because australia banned long-guns as a knee jerk reaction to someone using a rifle to kill a few people.

me? im liberal as hell. i think guns/roids/drugs etc should all be legal.

in a perfect world, okay fine, id be okay with gun legislation banning various types etc - but the truth is that it isnt a perfect world, gun controls dont work (imo it puts more power into the hands of criminals), drug controls dont work (they just make jobs for cops, jobs for prison guards/lawyers, and obscene rpofits for drug dealers) and governments just use bullshit to chip away at your right for this reason or that, until a small group of people have a lot of say over your own life and its bullshit

i know a lot of criminals and know what they get up to (its what happens when youre a good socializer, people talk around you). if i was facing that sort of shit from people like them, id want a handgun in my home so i could kill them on the spot. better to be up on charges before a court than have some fucks in your house extorting you/your family

oh australia has bullshit drug laws because too many people have that "if it doesnt affect me, i dont care" attitude and let government push through nonsensical legislation at huge expense after the Port Arthur massacre. they managed to get long arms banned but not pistols, with the same sort of bullshit in the first post - they got on a major news network, ran specials about the massagre, then paraded all sorts of guns in front of a middle aged public, asking "why do you NEED this type of gun?" and emptying the clip of an AK47. everyone gasped and voted to ban guns, cos the big bad machine gun looked scary and made a big noise

go to greece and you see the same thing as in switzerland - automatic rifles all over the place. end result: lots of polite people

Nothing works because nothing is enforced. Saying that gun controls here don't work is not an excuse to not use them or enforce them. The only excuse is as B0und said the entrenched culture and fascination people have to guns.

pft. the reason australia is such a nice place is because we have brilliant border control, high standards of education, heath, welfare, and a small gap between rich and poor. its not the lack of guns, its just that the poor in australia sit at home and watch soap operas because they can get by on government stipends and a bit of sly work to enjoy a decent standard of life.
