H-L 2 Thief Speaks

Description
There seem to be many twists and bends in the continuing H-L 2 saga. While Valve claim that only one third of the code was stolen, even after the release of a, barely, playable Half-Life 2 beta version, rumours are starting to spread that a pre-Gold release of the game and its full source code may be released tomorrow. According to HalfLife2.net forums and to a variety of H-L 2 fan sites the thief has spoken and this is what he said about the beta and Valve's response:

To everyone saying this is no Beta: I'd like to point out that THIS is what you wanted Valve to release on 9/30/03, theres no such thing as a much better release in Valves network!
I suggested to Valve to stop lying to their customers about how much was stolen. However, they disregarded my statement and called me a liar. Now they will see how much I have been lying when I release the Pre-Gold and all 100 per cent of the sourcecode. Actions speak louder then words.

Anonymous Leaker

The authenticity of this Anonymous Leaker cannot, of course, be verified until tomorrow and even then, only if the threats materialize.

If this is the real leak and he does carry out his threat then tomorrow could be the day that the final nail is hammered into Valve's and H-L 2's, already pounded, coffin.

Gamers can only hope that he is not for real or that he thinks about the reprecussions of his actions and does not carry out his threat.

cool.:fro:

until he puts something up, we won't really know.

could be that isn't the person that did it.

could be that they want to be seen as a stud and not the script kiddie that they are.

in the end, I couldn't care any less than I do.

Megagame released that back on the 8th and I haven't heard anything about him carrying out his intentions. Hopefully he will not for the creators sakes. As much as I don't like paying for software, I can handle something as cheap as a video game.

Oh the drama. I think I care less than NDN does.

I'm confused here.

So the thief is saying he has 100% of the code for half life 2?

If so, then what all damage can be done if he has this, or gives this code out?

Same situation, how about if he only has 1/3 of the code, like they are claiming?

Some of you smart people help me here.

Even if it is released it won't hurt Valve or the sales of HL2 one teeny bit.

If all of the source code is released, you could just end up with a lot of...interesting pirate versions of HL2. But, too much work still for most people to bother with (graphics and all that).

It would allow the people that write the hacks to have a huge advantage - instead of having to reverse engineer it, they can just look at the code.

Then they can write add-on hacks that allow you to move faster, see through walls, etc - things that would give you an advantage in play - usually this matters in multi-player mode where one player and/or team would then stand to benefit from this.

That said, "matters" is still a strong word.

In the worst case scenerio, this is bad for Valve because they can license out their engines to other companies that want to have games that use the same base code and just change the graphics - that is where these studios make most of their money - especially in the sense of id.
Counter Strike was an entire game that was only a mod on the first half life - I think Valve ended up buying them out - but if someone had the full code, they could then modify it do their own graphics for free instead of the mega bucks it costs to license it.

I've had a copy of the beta for about a week. Still can't figure out how make the damn thing work.

I will download the Pre-Gold copy if it comes out, and anything else that leaks also. If it's any good, I'll buy the game when it's realeased.

Thanks for answering. I see now.

I'm suprised this doesn't happen more often with developers. -Some guy gets pissed, so he leaks the info from the inside.

Oh well, this game is another Doom3 anyways. It should be completed about the same time as Hell freezes over.

Guy who works for me has the code, won't compile.
I mean unless HL2 is a bunch of error messages, it won't compile.

And the point is, if people do get it to work, it's going to be buggy as hell. So they're still going to purchase it.

It's quite the marketing scheme if you ask me.

I still think the screen shots are cool as hell - the physics are nice (it looks like they are using Havok in their engine, or perhaps they went ahead and wrote their own... which seems like a total waste) - but I love the look and feel. The style to it is kind of expressionist/surreal - love the gas masks.

LMAO - that isn't too far from the truth.

I nearly through my laptop against the wall this morning. My ssh connection was over a minute behind in keyboard lag - I had entire lines of code written out before even one letter of it was showing up on the screen, and then eventually it just closed the connection.

I'm on a 128K frame relay circuit shared by 3 servers - one of which is our mail server (and what people see everyone here as - it looks like our mail server hits sites, amusing), and 16 users.

It is slow as shit. Slower. I've been on many faster modems.

it'd be a real shame if this thread didn't make it to the best of ef.

It's pretty obvious this post was dead serious and in no way a sarcastic remark.

I agree..........this thread should make it to the best of ef.

Well since this is going to be in the "best of elite" I better get my name on here more.

I downloaded a couple of those gameplay movies yesterday (took all night) and watched them this morning.

WOW. That game is going to be awesome. I can't wait. Too bad it'll come out on PC before Xbox though:(

My guess is that it should be completed sometime within the next 7 years:D

:bawling:
