If your gym doesn't have a DL platform do you still drop the BB?

The hostile eye contacts make me believe people don't apreciate the sweet noise of the BB hitting the floor

It doesn't have to be just an open hand careless free drop. You can lower it and allow momentum to play a part - sort of a controlled drop. There is a big range between opening your hands at lockout and slowly and deliberately lowering the bar into perfect position. Unless you are really pulling heavy, it's not too hard to lower it. If this is a conservative atmosphere you might "save up" your crashes so to speak for when you really need them and avoid pushing a situation where they tell you to stop or find a new gym.

I've seen guys at the gym drop the bar from about four or five inches from the floor. One of the rules of the gym is no dropping weights and the owner doesn't like it but lets it go. Usually he hovers around when people are dropping weights and they typically stop. I'm sure his shadow is heavier than most PRs.

I'm still able to do a controlled lowering to the ground which I take as a sign that some bits of me are still way stronger than other bits that need to catch up. I guess that's a good sign for future potential before everything becomes one big grind.

I've once had the bar rip itself out of my grip at lockout at the last gym. Luckily, I was alone at the time so no complaints.

I'm not dropping the BB after the lockout!

I do a controlled lowering till the BB is just below my knees and then, yes, I open my hands

And my knees (my back too) greatly appreciate this

Whats DL Platform?

Haha, no my gym doesnt have one of those. Never been to one that does. And people do act all irritated with me.

I miss the platform at my college gym. Now my gym has magnum rubber flooring and rubber covered weights. The employees don't seem to mind and I say fuck off to any members who might complain.

Cheers,
Scotsman

yeah we have the rubber floor and rubber dumbells.

they dont like u to drop weights but dont seem to care all that much if u actually do do it, as lon gas ur not being a douche about it.

that's fucking ghey. if you're throwing shit around, or not in control of the bar you're dropping, it's dangerous.

if you have control then who cares? it's a gym. those same people look at you funny when you squat all the way down.

good post

My freeweights room is separate and on camera but there is no sound. Staff are hardly ever in there and our flooring and plates are rubberized. I could drop the bar from lockout on every rep with 500lbs if I wanted to!

Trained at a Golds gym in Florida which was more like a waiting room for the semetary. They had dumbells up to 140's or so and they were the cheaper welded one's with all different types of plates haphazardly thrown together. A sign did say not to drop the dumbells and when I put down the 120's I made a moderate noise - I had no spotter and those were very heavy for my incline presses. Immediately a PT comes over and tells me I need to work with them and not drop the dumbells because they will break. I told the little bald prick that if I broke them I'd pay for them and if I tore my rotator cuff trying to look after the cheap dumbells on the unpadded floor then I wouldn't be getting any money from him.

if anyone bothers you about it, instead of completely letting go, release it from your hands, but follow the bar all the way down with your palm still on the bar. this way they can't say that you are dropping it. besides, you can't just drop a bar at your knees if you plan on competing.

A controlled drop from below the knees onto a rubber mat is fine anywhere. If it makes a sound that belongs in the gym such as a light clanking and a gentle thud, you are okay. If it startles everybody with a crash then it should have been the result of a missed lift and everyone should be glad you are not injured.
