what are some beginner songs to help me get faster and strenghen my fingers. i' ve been playing simple man, american idiot by green day, and intro to under the bridge by rhcp. i cant play any fluently but its fun trying :)

Actually, the things that I used to show my students were the best things for dexterity, and speed. This is a mindless drill that you can do while you are watching TV or whatever. Use alternate picking. Know what that is? If not, pick down, up, down, up, and then go to the next string. Start on the low E string 1st fret. Index finger on the first fret, and pick the note. Next one middle finger, 2nd fret. Ring finger, third fret, and finally pinky on the 4th fret. Do this drill on every string. Play them from low E string to high E string. This drill will whip your fingers into shape, and you will develop the hand/eye coordination you need.

I would make them play this drill every week, first thing. I would make a judgement on their improvement. If they really showed improvement, I would let them pick a song they wanted to learn. If not, I would make them play more drills. There aren't any particular songs that you can learn per se that are going to help you any better than others. You just need to progressively takle more and more difficult material. You also need to learn a good sense of rhythm and timing. For that, I always recommend old AC/DC.

Here's a good simple drill for down/up picking, as marshallmadman was saying:

(the numbers represent the fret number)

E---8--7-----------------6--5-----5--6----------------7--8--
B----------6--5---8--7------------------7--8--5---6---------
G------------------------------------------------------------
D------------------------------------------------------------
A------------------------------------------------------------
e----------------------------------------------------------- (bass string)

and another for traversing the fretboard:

E-------------------------------5-8-----8-5------------------------------
B -------------------------5-8----------------8-5------------------------
G--------------------5-7---------------------------7-5-------------------
D------------5-6-7--------------------------------------7-6-5------------
A-------5-7----------------------------------------------------7-5-------
e--5-8--------------------------------------------------------------8-5--

*Each finger is assigned to a fret, so your index, middle, ring, and pinkie would be playing the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th frets respectively. Following this formula, you can build up speed and dexterity, as well as getting a general feel for the fretboard.

There's a bunch of good stuff on this site for building various techniques-

It all depends on what you want to start playing. I myself started out on some three chord Tom Petty tunes, and then got into some GnR riffs.

Have fun. :)

Here's one of my favorite finger excercise.

E-----------------------------------------------------------
B-----------------------------------------------------------
G-----------------------------------------4----5----6------ etc.
D-----------------------4----5----6----5----6----7---------
A-----4----5----6----5----6----7---------------------------
E---5----6----7---------------------------------------------

"Each finger is assigned to a fret, so your index, middle, ring, and pinkie would be playing the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th frets respectively."

Buy a metronone to guage your progress and work on your timing.

See your guitar players are all the same. :rose: I keep the timing. ;) I keep the tempo of the song. ;)

Oh yeah, I'm the drummer. :p

Learn to play your favorite songs, simple chord progressions first, then get into melodies, solos, etc. It helps if you have a wide array of musical interests. Drills can get boring

Just go straight into sweep picking

thats a fun sweep to play, Children of Bodom - Warheart
If thats too advanced then try some old school metallica songs, the rythms are really fast and stuff, but once you get them down your fingers will move a lot faster.

Centre of Eternity-Ozzy. Nice easy one-lol. I could play it last year, waitin on hands to clear up, cant even hardly pick up the fuking ax now. Friend offered to buy, ill prob sell i was burnt out before the accident

personally when i learned, i focused way more on strumming first

started off with tragically hip and bob seger stuff, as well as some Matt Good... id recommend it

off topic: u know whats a great guitar tho? telecaster. i LOVE the neck on those.

1) Stop playing shitty music that is easy.

2) Learn some Jeff Beck, Clapton, or Alvin Lee

3) OLGA is your friend
