Had someone come into the clinic today....

"Hi. I was wondering if your clinic euthanizes dogs?"

"Yes, we do if it's needed."

"Oh - that's great because I am moving in a couple weeks and I am not going to be able to bring my dog so can I schedule an appt for that?"

"Uh, no ma'am, we don't euthanize animals for no reason. Let me call an animal shelter to see if they will take your dog and you can sign him over to them."

Thankfully, an animal shelter had room for this pooch.

Sick people. SICK.

P.S. This wasn't me dealing with the woman it was the receptionist... lucky it wasn't me.. I can't control myself in certain situations (especially when it deals with animals).

Peeps got balls.

If were gonna do something so shamefull, I try to do it over email, if that failed, the phone... but never in person.

Well who would bring your dog in then? And this was a YOUNG dog, btw. You can make an appt and all that maybe by e-mail but then you'd have to have someone bring your dog in. Most clinics won't do this - only the bad ones.

Breaks my heart. This dog was adorable.. a Golden Retriever.

OMG... I would've been fired if she asked me that question... Maybe thrown something at her too...Sick bitch...

You overheard this convo? I could not contain myself if I had.

I would have said something like, " Gee, you should have been the poster child for abortion".

um.... and then the animal shelter has to pay to have the animal put down.. so your clinic lost out on the $$$???

maybe this is a good side thing you could do, help with adoption of unwanted pets that are brought in??

Our clinic works with MULTIPLE no kill shelters. They will not put this animal down. Besides, a young Golden Retriever will get adopted out very fast. People go for those dogs, especially.

Our clinic does help with unwanted pets... we are constantly taking in strays and adopting then out... but we have to do it through a shelter because there are multiple steps that need to be taken and our clinic is a main surgery clinic so it's extremely busy all the time. But we keep strays there until the animal shelters that our hospital is affiliated with come and take the dog. These are all good animal shelters. I actually got one of my girlies from them.

BELIEVE me- it was hard. But I had to. I didn't want to scare the lady away and then have her take the dog to someone who may actually end up putting him down. I only kept quiet so we could get that dog. And we did.

I don't believe in having "pets". I've never had one and just don't get it. Now if I had mice then I might get a cat, if I had a ranch then I might have a cow dog, ect.. If I want a friend I go to the go-go bar! :)

As for them bringing their dog in, it just shows how little responsibility that americans have. "Hey let's get a dog to be cool, oh now we are moving let's get ride of the dog so it is easy for us!"

good.. we have dog racing here.. you don't even want to know how many get put down almost everyday..

I was kidding goofball. Id never do that to an animal.
I know. I'm just saying that many peeps would want to do that crap through e-mail or phone but for a situation like this - impossible to do.

These are the people who free their dogs and think they will come back. Sad world.

I don't understand people like this. Don't adopt an animal if you're not willing to assume responsibilty for it's welfare. And to respond with, "Oh, that's great..." as if she just collected 5.00 on a scratch-off.

Oh I know. My neighbor rescued a greyhound. It''s SICK. I will never go to a dog race. Ever.

Either way our clinic does what it can.

Good that you got him. I would have tucked him into a safe place and then said my peace. You have better control than I do.

I'd prolly want to drop kick half the people who enter your doors.

OMG! I would have throttled her right there. God, how could someone look at a little Golden Retriever and even fathom putting it down for no reason other than inconvenience. Someone should put her down for inconveniencing the world with her pitiful existence.

Thankfully, we have many more "good," people than bad. This was actually a rare occassion. The sadest part are all the dogs we get that are going to go to animal shelters. Especially this pure breed husky that's been in our clinic for over 2 months. She got hit by a car, her pelvis shattered and her legs detached from her hip sockets... the Dr's put her hips back together and somehow used screws to hold everything together and she will most likely recovery fully. The dog was left on the side of the road after being hit and someone brought her in. Pure white dog with crystal blue eyes.

Winter: But the pics don't do her justice. She was howling to the moon today. lol.

How does one process the hate felt for these ppl?! And why can we not euthanize humans that easy?

She is EZTREMELY gentle. And she wouldn't be much money. The shelter that will be taking her only charges $55 for dogs, I belive. And they pay for her to get spayed (although I believe she already is) and have her first shots (which I think she already has)...

She is wonderful. Very intelligent, too. And howls to the moon - I can't get over that. lol.

and thats funny as fuck, how can anyone have the balls to go and face people who work at a vet and ask em to kill the animal

Yeah - I agree. Those kinds of dogs go very quickly. People always ask about her when we are out walking her. So I have no doubt that she will get a good home and make a great pet. I wish I could take her. :(

AGREED

and it pisses me off the people who must have a barking dog in something like an apartment, or close houses. They wouldn't like it if I had my stereo up while they were sleeping at night would they?

Rude & inconsiderate, people are nowadays.

Once you own pets you tend to find they are much better to be around than the normal degenerate human being. They don't judge, talk, or insult.

I would rather be around my dogs anyday than most of the general population that exists. Humans usually discust me.

P.S. My dogs are great guard dogs so there's another reason to own. :)

If my pets need put down, I'll do it myself. Having someone else do it is so cheap. My dog deserves better.

And how exactly would you go about doing that?

I've had my dogs put down before and we were all in the room. I'd rather them be comfortable ... we wouldn't know how to give injections and all that.. that's for the vets to do. And my dog was very comfortable when he went.

I hate that part.

I hope you're not one of those assholes with dogs that bark all hours of the night.

My point is, if you live in close quarters with other people, get your dog's bark under control or better yet get a cat, fish, hamster, etc.

Your father never took the paralyzed dog into the woods with a .22 and a shovel and came back alone, I see.

I agree with you. No, mine do not bark unless someone rings the doorbell and they can be quiet on command, They are very well trained.

I hate when people don't have control over their pets. But that's not the pets fault it's the owners.

Mine aren't annoying.. they are the protectors of the fort. LOL.

Nope- not the way we do things here. If my dog was paralyzed and suffering.. I would have her put down humanely.

Ahh, so a bullet to the head is inhumane?

BTW, I get equally pissed about people who have pets put down rather than pay for an operation or care that would save their lives. I might or might not take some flack for this but if you can't afford to care for your pet, don't get one. And if you would rather kill your pet than pay for it's care, give it up to a shelter who will patch them up on their own budget and adopt them out to someone who deserves them.

redguru said:

I think you really have to know what you're doing. You think everyone would give one shot in the head and the dog would be dead? It may not be dead..

I wouldn't do it. Euthanasia guarantee's the dog will be put to sleep... so the dog falls asleep and never wakes up. That's how I'd want my dog to go. I'm not saying a bullet in the head compared to other things isn't humane.. I'm just saying for this particular issue at hand, I believe Euthanasia to be my choice.

I also agree. Unless the dog is suffering from whatever health prolem, they should not be put down.

My Bama girl was thought to have needed hip replacements (5 grand per hip) and luckily she didn't... although that's a shitload of money for surgery (would be about 10 grand).. so many people may not know how much their dog will cost down the road.. .and you can't predict that. So to a certain extent, where does it end?

A dog, shoot behind the ear forward through the skull, death is instantaneous. Costs less than $.25.

Please, it's simple, My grandfather used to knock out steers with a sledgehammer, then bleed them out in 30 seconds. Pigs, shoot them between the eyes with a .22, (it only knocks them out), string them up and bleed them out.

Seriously, what makes dogs, cats, seals, horses and dolphins any different that livestock? Is it that they're cute?

When the animals suffering is in question, sure. When they can be saved and still have good quality of life, I am adament about this.

You're talking to a girl who gave her kitty insulin shots every 12 hours for the last three years of his life and spent probably thousands of dollars on special food, needles, insulin, and regular vet visits over those years, not to mention having to overcome a needle phobia to inject my baby at regular intervals.

If you can't pay for an operation, and your pet isn't very old, find a palce that will do it and give up your animal.

Uhhh I don't believe in ANY animal suffering. Pig, cow, horse, etc. I am very against that. I don't eat beef, pork, etc. I am trying to stop eating chicken... slowly but surely I am.

I do not like that animals have to suffer like that. Especially the cows/pigs (how slaughterers kill them).

I would choose to euthanize ALL my animals... but you can't with meat, I guess.

My dog, my choice - I will do it respectfully and euthanize... I could never shoot ANY living thing ... (ok besides a person).

He was wonderful, though, J...After a couple of months he got to know when it was medicine time and he would - I kid you not - come sit in front of me and roll on his side. Seconds after I gave him a shot, he'd be purring. Somehow he understood that it made him better and that it was difficult for me to do it.

I miss him. :(

i know a guy who had a diabetic dog....they eventually figure out that it makes them feel better

I hate when animals are sick or start getting old. My huge shepherd fell off my bed last night and nearly gave me and her a heart attack. My bed is very high and I have a wooden floor. She was freaked.. I lifted her back on my bed (she's heavy but she's getting old so her hips..) and then she just curled up right next to me and layed in the crease of my body...

I felt so bad but she seems to be okay today. I love big furry dogs to cuddle with. Best sleeping buddy ever. My big bear. LOL.

what a sweet angel

I believe all living and thinking creatures have souls. But I view a soul as our internal energy. We're all energy which goes "somewhere" when the physical body dies.
