Grip width on the bench press

Micker

New member
I have been wondering if my grip is too narrow or too close while benching. I heard the generic saying, that you should hold the bar at a distance that when you come down, you arm and elbow will form a 90 degree angle at half way. I am only 5'7" and right now I am holding the bar with my middle finger on the line between the gnurl. Does that sound right?? My sticking point seems to be just below mid point. Once I get above mid point, the weight jsut shoots up. I thought maybe my hand placement may be the problem. Any suggestions??

I think that's a good place for your hands, if you put on a shirt I would go outside the ring.

Have you ever tried to work boards, close grips, things of that nature to address your sticking point? That's a common place to stick, it won't move very far from that area, just have to keep training the muscles that help your bench.

im not a powerlifter but i usualy grip about 2 " off the smooth im 6'2" and alot of people tell me i go too narrow but its just what feels comfortable for me

same here. i get more of a stretch when im a little over shoulder width. its all personal preference really, just experiment a little

I grip as wide as possible, 32" apart, index finger on the power ring. The wider the grip the more you use your pec muscles.
