Greatest Heavyweight Boxer Ever...

It's debatable of course, but as I sit here watching ESPN Classics showing of "The Rumble in the Jungle"(Ali Vs. Foreman), I have to say that Ali was without doubt the fastest puncher of any heavyweight in history. What do you guys think?

rocky marciano, rocky marciano. how come every time we talk about boxing some white man has to bring up rocky marciano!

he did woop joe louis's ass.

joe louis was 122 years old.

BUTTERBEAN!!! HE KNOCKED OUT JOHNY KNOXVILLE IN ABOUT 15 SECONDS. NOONE CAN TOUCH HIM.

SERIOUSLY THOUGH, TO FIND OUT WHO WAS THE BEST FIGHTER EVER, YOU HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE TIMES OF JOE LEWIS AND ROCKY MARCIANO. THE TIMES BEFORE THE LIKES OF CROOKS LIKE DON KING AND BIG TV CONTRACTS. THAT MEANS BEFORE ALI'S TIME!!!

I'm surprised to see Rocky's name mentioned! Not that I disagree, but he rarely gets mentioned in the same breath as Ail, or Louis. I'm not sure why though, with a 49-0 record.

boxing does not attract the best athletes anymore (see boxing, basketball, baseball, hockey).

go back to when horse racing and boxing were king.

Jack Johnson. Seriously, i doubt anyone else has ever compared.

Greatest of all time is hard to state because there have been a couple of legends who can wear that hat... but each for different reasons.

1. Holyfield - Why? Because his fights were among the most exciting fights in boxing history. Damn near every one of them was a classic. Secondly, he was never a true heavyweight. He was a cruiser who buffed up to fight with the big boys. That is an incredible accomplishment. Holyfield heart and soul is what great boxing is about.

2. Ali - definitely ready to wear the crown as the all time best boxer; unfortunately, most of his fights were dull as hell. Rope-a-dope ruined boxing for years. Yes it was a winning strategy, but it abandon the concepts of "courage" and "champion" and turned boxing into something infinitely less noble.

3. Lewis - great fights every one. He defined "champion." He was one of the hardest hitters boxing has ever seen, a scientist in the ring, and fast fast fast. He met every opponent with everything he had.

Mike Tyson pre Robin Givens.
