My grandmother on my dad's side died 4 years ago. Most everyone got first dibs on her stuff, and I didn't get anything to remind me of her. Well, my parents just moved into a new house, and my stepmom suddenly decided she hates antiques. So, I just inherited a solid cherry dining table, antique china, cherry corner cabinet, a wingback chair, and two victorian cherry side chairs. These are really sentimental to me because they have been passed down for generations, and they remind me of my grandma. =-)

Plus, when I moved in with asshole, I gave all my furniture to family, friends and charity and didn't have much for my new place. Now, I have BETTER stuff. Karma really does work sometimes.

YEAH!

very nice heather. If you ever decide to recover the wingback chair, let me warn you... its expensive.

yeah, I am going to recover it. I have someone who does it for $150 plus costs for material, though. =-)

death tax sucks.

My father is quite rich and he said he would rather spend all the money then let it go to the tax man then to my hands. Nothing against me but he hates taxes and I would not be surpised.

What ... no cash?
The cash was divided among her children. I actually wrote MYSELF out of her will because I was the lawyer who drafted her will, and it wouldn't be right for a lawyer to draft a will in which they stand to inherit.

I got my furniture from K-mart's lawn & garden dept.

I don't know what the current threshold is, but I know it is in the millions before it is estate taxed. Your dad should know there are trusts and such to avoid estate taxes. That isn't my field of expertise, but he should take some of that money and hire an estate planning attorney...lol.

Yeah, I know some one who does it cheaply.

Will you please go into more detail about the asshole?

Money is an odd thing in my family and yes his accounts are at the level and esp he has own business as well

I grew up as a teen working at in a cafe washing dishes making nothing and smelling like chicken and bbq sauce while he had a watch collection valued in in the six figures and cars and etc.

I think that is motivation to make a good buck to show him I dont need his money and at the same I dont think he wants me to have his. I should earn my own. Its not what you have, but what you achieved.

living revokable trust is much better then a will for tax reasons and easier to get your hands on it. But he will an easy 35 years

Thanks guys. Yeah, it really is nice to get some of my Mammie's things. She was a really something else. She is hard to describe.

I'll have to come check it out sometime...

my parents got my grandmas big ass table from pre-1910. Its an awesome table, haha.

Death taxes kick-in at 600,000 to $1,000,000 inheritied, depending on the year you kick the bucket.

If you own your own business and meet other certain conditions, it can be pushed back to a total of $1.3M inheritied.

But some states hit you as well on top of federal death tax.

Grats us. It doesn't really pay to die.

bend over. I have an in-her-itance for ya.

At first glance, I thought you were going to say that they got her big ass. lol. I'm a weirdo.

fucking scrub gov't finds a way to get their useless hands on everything. they probably have assholes sitting around a table thinking of new ways to come up with a bullshit tax.

I'm actually opposed to estate taxes and inheritance taxes because it represents double taxation of the same money, which is not fair.

I bet no one expected to hear me say that...lol.

There is this young guy at my work who makes $250,000 plus and he is really getting the screw to him by the gov. He cannot declare or write anything off. He just is really good at what he does and he works alot of hours and the big gov is really putting the screw to him.

If you got any 1907 roman numeral double eagles, I'll buy 'em off ya, lol.

Sorry, no such luck, but I have some collectible "coach" dishes. Interested? lol...just kidding. I would never sell my grandma's stuff.

I am interested in buying some of the old radioactive dinnerware they used to make back in the day, lol.

I've always wanted something radioactive. Oh, and gallium, too. I totally want some gallium.

:cow:
fiesta ware is still pretty common. You can find it at flea markets and such.

i don't think i have anything radioactive. Nor do I have gallium.

Before you ask, my grandma didn't happen to have any uranium, either.

congrats on your windfall.

if you ever get tired of the furniture...it would look just right in my circa 1880's double parlor victorian home. (hint, hint)

And it's a triple-tax too:

Before you make the first nickle in revenue:
------------------------------------------
Sales and use tax
Payroll / SS tax
Property tax
Franchise tax
Health insurance/benefits (still an indirect tax)
EEoC / DoL compliance (still an indirect tax)
Building codes and permitting
Regulations and approvals (FDA, SEC, FCC, etc. etc.)

Then once you eek-out a profit:
--------------------------------
Federal income tax
State income tax

Then once you die:
---------------------
Death tax

Even with the capital gains provision at 20%, the company I sold still compounded out to over 60% tax. If don't do something to park it, it will be right at 80% compounded tax by the time I croak.

Tax this and tax that = the governments answer to idiotic, careless politicians.
