Got a personal trainer

gingersnap

New member
Just had to share, I got a great personal trainer. She is just a little older that me, she is 42, I am soon to be LOL, she has a perfect body and even trains professional athletes....I worked with her today and my arms feel so pumped...Oh I think I'm going to get somewhere finally! :)

Congratulations on working towards your goals. I just finished my fourth session with my trainer today. The gym I go to offers four free sessions with membership. Last week he took me through various exercises for each body part and today he had me show him what I learned so I would know what to do when I work on my own. Keep up the good work!

congrats to both of you on the PTs.....there is so much to this sport and making your training work....Iam going to RANT a minute.....DO NOT GET a PT THAT is a FAT SLOB or someone who is 110# telling you they are going to put huge mass on your body....you have to be" here" or been" there" to train someone with these goals.....One thing that is difficult to teach is "INTENSITY"....ladies this is the KEY factor with this sport.....this is your #1 goal...if you get this concept, the rest will follow....this is the "ZONE" so commonly refered to by atheletes-and the hardest area for women to grasp as a whole.....the pro females on this board, know what this is and can tap into it at will....this is what sets them apart from the women who lift weights and workout.....your PT should be into your routine as much as you are-attention should be focused on you and how you are performing....be careful not to waste your time and money.....best of luck.....

amen!

intensity is something that numerous new trainees lack. also the willingness for "more". alot of times a client puts themselves in the PT's hands to read their mind as to what was the proper intensity. its a weird phenomenon.

"how was that, a challenge?"
<client thinks...."he will make it heavier...and i dont want to get bulky">
"yeah that was fine"
or...
"i felt that"

for a PT, a client that says they can do a little more is golden. it means they arent afraid to push themselves, arent afraid to fail and trust their PT when they may fail to keep them safe.

Thanks for the great advice and encouragement. Intensity? Hmm is this like when people are grunting and veins are popping outta their heads? It takes me 2 days to recover when I work with her, that's all I know. I feel like she pushes as far as she can. She warned me not to get concerned if my arms got big at first that they would retain water as the muscle grows? I told her I waasn't worried about getting big. I'm a natural ecto so bring on the big.

I have a "bitch comment" to get off of my chest. My husband and I have been working out for about 10 years...mind you, my husband is much more fit than I am. We have a home gym and love it but actually wanted some variety so we decided to join 24 hour fitness. I had visited one before so I knew what kinds of machines they had. First, we are talked to like we're complete fitness morons by a "trainer" who was probably 50 lbs overweight. We just kind of blew it off realizing this was just his sales pitch. The thing that really pissed me off was they wanted to take our body fat measurements to see if we could benefit from hiring a personal trainer. First off, I've had mine taken by a doc last year so I knew approximately what mine was (23%..stats: 5"4, 122 lbs) The trainer took my measurements and jacked them up....he said I had 31% body fat...that falls into the severe obese section! What BS!! My husbands body fat is 12% and they said his was 25%! Anyways...what they do is jack it up so you hire them and then a month later they give you your real measurements.....BUYERS BEWARE OF 24 HOUR SCAMS...

you are dealing with individuals trainers working under a corporate umbrella. you can give all the bad press you want to a company but know that they dont condone what happened to you, nor do they train it. Apex Fitness Group has some of the most knowledgeable people i have met with regards to training, nutrition and supplementation (and they are responsible for all instruction of trainers for 24 hour).

its unfortunate you dealt with someone who was unscrupulous, but... i have no tolerance for generalizations when talking about personal trainers. its like any other person you will deal with, some good some bad.i have one of the most steady client bases of all the trainers at my club because i work with integrity AT ALL TIMES. i wont pretend that a trainer cant/wont pad measurements, but...

Anyways...what they do is jack it up so you hire them and then a month later they give you your real measurements.....BUYERS BEWARE OF 24 HOUR SCAMS...

come on now.

Ok...You're right...I apologize for the generalization. It just really upset me how this guy was so deceiving. People hire personal trainers to help them to reach their goals...this guy didn't know squat! It really made me mad....and the sad thing is, I now find it hard to recommend him to any of my friends that are looking for a personal trainer. I love 24 Hour Fitness...great club, great instructors...I'm not judging them. I just wanted people to really research credentials of a trainer before hiring...they don't come cheap!

here is the trick:

watch the trainers on the floor as they work with their clients. do they move quickly, are they doing good exercises with proper form, is the trainer attentive?

ive had many referrals from just people watching me work with people.

I had a bad experience w/ trainers at 24 hour too. Oh well thats how you learn though. He was nice too I bought a friend! (expensive friend) hee hee.

Big Nate- How do you get to be a personal trainer? I know there's a certification process but do you not agree that it's hard to take fitness advice from someone that is obviously 50 lbs overweight? At the club I attend, I've yet to see a personal trainer that is in shape. I know that's kind of stereo-typing but that's what most people think. I'll follow your advice though and see who's best with others....thanks!

its a combination of experience & education. I wouldnt hire a trainer under 30 y.o. & they must have a Kinesology degree & competed in bodybuilding or powerlifting.

the PT certificate programs are a joke imo...Ive seen the questions & even I could pass it!! LOL!!

Most of the personal trainers at the gym I attend are 20 something's and "chunky"....the trainer I had the bad experience with in padding BF #'s didn't even know what HIIT was because I told him that's what I was most interested in...sheesh!

supermom:
i agree, you should walk the walk as a trainer, if you are going to talk the talk. 50lbs overweight is ridiculous.

supermom said:

did you describe it as "HIIT" or interval training?

many times colloquial terms are not universal.

as for certification process, it depends on the trainer. for 24 hour there is a universal process, ie a 40 hour training course. thats just to get in the door. to increase your pay rate, you have to either be degreed, certified by a nationally recognized organization (ACE,NASM,ISSA,NSCA etc.) or have 2 years experience.

chances are you got a new trainer. often times they are the ones doing free bodyfat for people. i dont "donate" my time to the club. if someone wants to sit down with me and talk, we will sit down and talk. i dont feel i have to justify my services with someone by scaring them with their own physical stats or belittling them with how little they know about fitness.

the PT certificate programs are a joke imo...Ive seen the questions & even I could pass it!!

everyone says that. what do they say? "etc. etc. .....til you walk in his shoes."

BigNate-
You "sound" like the kind of personal trainer I would love! I'm so mad that I had such a bad first experience because I have so much to learn and would like to be taught by an experienced personal trainer that's not gonna BS me....you know? Yes, I mentioned HIIT and he didn't understand...then I mentioned interval training and he asked if I was a marathon runner (?)...Do you know of any trainers in the Dallas area?

no, i dont. its such a big company, i can barely keep track of trainers at other clubs.

the thing you will find out: the good trainers are their own businesses. the ones you encounter, as you described, are generally new ones. inexperienced or not busy.

instead of allowing them to interview you, you interview them! just like they are applying for a job, because basically they are. find out credentials, diversities of training methods, their background (athlete, bodybuilder etc.) this will give you insight into what you can expect.

pm me anytime if you have specific questions or talk to a trainer and need input before you make a decision.

I just wanted to hop in here, hope you don't mind. I have a trainer that put my program together. He has competed himself, but dosen't have a degree. I have great results in my body. He really really pushes me to a area that I can't get to by myself. I have learned alot from him and have made some great improvements.

I find that some women trainers just don't give you what you need if you are looking to gain muscle and mass. The pink weights just don't get it. Make sure they are giving you what YOU want and not what they think women need!!

Keep working hard!!!

I was going to be a personal trainer but I was told by one of the trainers in my gym that they prefer younger people as trainers. I've seen the younger trainers they have at my gym - I wouldn't train with them for free. All young, never smile, no enthusiasm, and spend 1/2 their time bullshitting about their weekend or day's events. I don't know about you, but if I pay for a trainer no. 1 they have to look like they work out, want to push me to the limit, be enthusiastic and make me want to come back again. Yesterday, I was helping someone work out - pushing her to the limit, showing her new exercises, explaining things - one of the trainers said I should have gotten paid for that session! I said too bad they won;t hire me - they are really missing out on a good trainer. But I think age means more than anything else to them -

funny you should say that. there was an article in "Personal Fitness Professional" this month about that very same topic. trainers slightly out of shape, ageism, etc. it said though there is a paradigm shift towards more knowledgeable vs. pretty trainers, those that offer the complete package and around the age of 30 are the most marketable. there were quite a few examples of those nearing 40 getting pushed out or into management positions.

Supermom...I work out at a 24 hour in Plano. There is a trainer there that I think is good. He is older, not the 20-something that is still learning... My husband and I first scoffed at him because he was putting people on the smith machine and doing dinky weights. Then we ran into him this weekend doing his own work out with another trainer. We started talking to him and watched what he was doing. He had some great advice for my goals and seemed to be doing good exercises himself. I guess he just does what the slacker customers want...

If you are interested, let me know and I will pass on his info...
