GMAT Prep classes...Kaplan or Princeton ?

can someone help me here. I am hearing mixed reviews about both. just wanna here some suggestions or opinions...thanks in advance !

fuck the classes...

buy the books from both publishers and use them both to study..

and then just study for a few months and go take it..

i started studying for it last march or april doing that and was somewhat prepared and probably could have pulled a 700.. but i was on klonopin for anxiety, which makes thinking a chore, so i put it off until i get off the klonopin..

I used Kaplan and my score went up 40 points. The class helped me find time every week to study. If you are focused you could buy the books and probably get the same results .

The Kaplan course also had a few pages of shortcuts (math and verbal stuff that was really worth it). I tossed my stuff out long ago. Maybe someone can email you a copy.

Good Luck

Don't do anything until you know where you are applying. If not a top 20 school, dont waste the grand.

For what its worth, I took the Princeton and scored 660. I should have done better, but top 10% was good enough for my first choice school. I could have made it into any school, Stern, Sloan, Kellogg with my score and my solid essays...

Thanks for the replies !

hey SV2,

when did you take the GMAT ? a friend took a GMAT course at NYU. paid $700, and got a 720 on the GMAT. don't know to many getting over 700.

I gotta get a score close to 700. it's more competitive than ever to get in. I have a co-worker that was just excepted to Stern. he got a 650 on his GMAT and was initially denied acceptance.

He made a few calls and found someone that knows a Prof over there. this Prof, wrote a colorful letter for him, that got him from being denied to getting on the waiting list. he receives a letter this week, saying he can start in the FAll. I'm happy for him, but at the same time, a little taken back that a so-called prestigious school like Stern would change their initial decison.

anyway...thanks again for the replies !

Agreed.....go with Kaplan. Also, check your local community college. Most of them have Exam Preparation classes, i.e. GRE, GMAT, etc.

Just a thought.......

I'm not sure about kaplan, but i know princeton review has some stipulations saying that if you arent happy with your score and u attend everyclass and did the homework assigned that you can take the class again, im not sure if its at a 50-75% discount or free. I've known people that have taken both classes by the companies and said they were good courses and their scores improved. they teach more than material and also give you techniques to take the test and make it easier. the tests dont test knowledge they just test the ability to derive an answer so you can get some answers just narrowing down.

thanks Zeebo and TooShort,

i called princeton, and they said one can take the class up to 1yr. i see the price has gone up a little ($1149).

ez,

You can get into stern with a sub 700, if you have good exp, and good essays....

I know of people in the mid 6's who got in last year...

buy one of the practice books and get an idea of your score range. If you score above 600 with out any refresher, just buy the ETS book, you can get it onlive from their website.

Appreciate the vote of confidence !

I've been working in the financial industry for over 10yrs. started out as a data entry person at an investment advisory firm. moved on to trading assistant...switch firms and became a trader. I now supervise back office operations. i hope this shows a progression.

i majored in Risk management and actuarial science.

i have my series 7, 63, 55 and 24. i can get letter of refs from the CEO of my firm, 2 Profs, and lastly from the one of the Partners at the firm where i was the trading assistant. I am working on one of the congressman down in Washington. but i understand they rarely write their own letters and i need a real signature.

thanks again !

EZ,
Seems to me with the things you listed you shouldnt have a problem getting in if you score a decent score. I know a few people who didnt really study for the tests and did decent (both scoring in the 600 range) . like others said, if you're a self motivated person just buy one of the books and do the work yourself. Some of the exam techniques they teach will be in there. If you study yourself and put some effort into it you will be fine.

I took Princeton Review for law school lsat. I scored a 151 before and a 160 after. Not bad, worth its money. But I later decided an MBA would be better route for me...

The title of the person who writes the recommendation doesn’t matter, don’t get caught up in that.. what matters is what they have to say about you. Best thing you can do is to get your immediate supervisor to write a glowing recommendation. That means the most to the admissions people. I know, I asked that question point blank (after I was accepted).

They wont care about the certs you hold, but they will *love* to see the progression you have made, which sounds pretty good.

Also, make sure in your essays you clearly state why you want to go back to school and get an MBA, what you hope to accomplish with an MBA. More specifically, why Stern is the best choice for you, and vice versa.

I still have my essays if you want to see examples of what got me into one of the top 10 pt mba programs in the nation

Dayum....thanks again Tooshort, Makavelli and SV2 !

I need to take you all out for a drink ! One drink, everyone will sip and pass...LOLOL

anyway, if you can send the essays that would be cool: [email protected].

also, what do you think about going to one of those consultants that will aid in the process...waste of money or not ?

The CEO of my firm is the person that hired me. I wish i could get a sample of his writing.

anyway,....thanks again !
