So me and gladiator agreed to do a competition consisting of :

Rep out:

315 deadlift
185 bench
135 military
225 squat

1 rep max:
1 handed deadlift (with strap, either arm)

3 rep max:
pullups with weight (bw not counted, just weight)

I know I am going to get destroyed by gladiator but I figured it would be really fun anyway:)

I'll embed the videos I took for deadlifting and military press (I just did those in a little while)

I figured I would post each part of the contest in a seperate video.
 
Deadlift: Got 315x15 reps



Military press: Got 135x9 reps



I was disappointed with the military press, was hoping for 10+ reps. But I haven't barbell military pressed in over a month. My old max was 150x5.
On deadlifts I could have gotten 315x25 if there was someone screaming in my face calling me a pussy lol:evil: I used a belt and chalk, my form went to crap so I am glad I had the belt.

Gladiator: I figure for deadlifts it is over when you take longer than 5 seconds rest between reps.

nice... not sure if this is going to be right but i think it's something to consider for deadlifts- get that ass down and arch your back more. also don't bend your arms before pulling up. That's what i noticed but maybe someone else can chime in and let me know if this is valid or not.

Yeah bro but the thing is I knew my form was going to be absolute shit! On my normal sets I arch my back quite a bit more, and I keep my arms perfectly straight, but you can see especially at the end I was so drained I kind of used a stretch reflex and jerked down then pulled lol. On having my ass lower I think that is a good thing normally but I am a taller lifter and that is the best position for me. Thanks for the advice though I always appreciate criticism.:)

yeah man i know what you mean. Nonetheless, you did a fantastic job!

While we're on the subject, i think you should focus on locking out everything simultaneously. If you watch the vid, your glutes don't lockout until after your legs are locked out.
 
You guys should do the one handed deads minus straps. It's a grip feat. Adding straps makes it kinda gay.

Thanks a lot sl means a lot to me:) Alright if gladiator is down we will do :

1 handed deadlift without strap
1 handed deadlift with strap

It's just that I injured the tendon of my ring finger in my right hand doing 1 handed deadlifts so when I use the strap it takes a lot of emphasis off that finger. Also I pulled 205x3 without a strap one handed 1st time, but I just pulled 305 with my left hand with a strap. I don't do them for grip, I just do them more for fun, so whichever way gets up the most weight is my favorite:D A guy from my gym pulled 285 one handed with a strap his first time deadlifting:eek2: BTW, nice new avatar:D
 
Don't do them until your tendon is 100%

If you're gonna pull one handed deads with straps you might as well wear gloves too :D

I just realised that mark felix video is hook grip, not as impressive as some of the standard double overhand grip strength vids iv seen but still awesome!

405 with a hook grip hurts like crazy. Imagine pulling that with the hook but one handed :evil:

Ill do some of my shit tonight. Ill probably do deadlifts and bench. Tomorrow I will do squats and military and pullups. Honestly I dont wanna do the 1 handed DL thing my grip sucks but ill try it probably tonight before the 315 deads.

As long as the bar doesnt come off the back then were good to go. How about a 10 second break and after that ur pretty much done.

And parallel, not ATG. My flexibility sucks

For pullups, rules are chin over bar and each rep must start from a deadhang.
Deadlifts: no straps, any grip, must lockout, only 5 second break between reps
1 handed deadlift: take 1 rm with strap and without, your other hand cannot touch your leg or any other part of your body. Must have full lockout.
bench: touch the chest and full lockout. as soon as spotter touches the bar it is over
military: start from below chin, full lockout over head
squats: Must break parallel (or to parallel), only 10 seconds rest between reps, bar must stay on back for whole set

Lol how is that being a pussy? If i get a camera and you really want to do our comp, then how about you can do whatever i am doing for deadlifts on that day and go for as many reps as you can and i'll do the same?
 
Nice lifting so far Tblock - those are some good weights for a young guy. You're on your way to being a beast!

Rarrrrrrrrr!!!!;) Lol I plan on joining the army either officer or enlisted, so that unfortunately is already ruining some of my plans for beastliness. 5 mile runs just kill muscle mass:( But so far I am still making good progress with 3 days a week of running, if I go enlisted and try out for army rangers that will up to running 1-2 times a day 6-7 days a week:( Thanks for the compliment though:D

Jdid + em: I don't really think jdid is being a pussy, however I do think if he gets a camera the actual competition will not hurt his routine at all, it didn't for me and in fact so far has been a welcome change of pace.

I will do 225 rep out squat, 185 rep out bench, weighted pullups, and I'll also take a video of my rows and 1 handed power snatches to post in my fitness log.

Bench: 185x15 full lockout reps



Pullups: Bodyweight+55 lbsx3



So bench went alright, if I did typical bullshit rep out style no lockouts I could have done better. Pullups I didn't get my chin over the bar on 55x3, glad can I have a little break on that because as you see I have to cross my legs in front of me to avoid touching the ground and it makes it way harder. 1 handed powersnatch video is in my fitness log, I got 95x1 easily but couldn't get more:(

EDIT: Also on bench I forgot to set up properly so the bench was off balance and it made me off balance lol. I haven't done a rep out bench like this in a while so I ran out of endurance quick.

I spoke to EM- he's starting a routine made by bblazer so we're going to hold off on it if we'll ever have it at all. I offered to have something where i do w/e weight i am using for deads and we do a rep out.

DUDE ok so i recorded it onto a videocamera. Its my sisters and she has the cord to hook up to the computer so its coming on tmr morning i promise lol. I just got to do 185 bench, 1 handed dead, 225 squat and my pullup 3 rep max. Im doin it all tomorrow :)

No problem don't worry about it:) I wasn't able to download footage to the computer for a long time from my videocamera because we didn't have the right software lol. Good luck with doing that all tomorrow. Make sure to take plenty of rest, you'll need it to catch up to my strength levels:evil::evil: :laugh2:

Really happy with the 1 handers, chalk HELPED SO MUCH! It added 40 pounds to my pr 1 hander no strap:)

Well the idea was just for me and gladiator to do a fun challenge. If you want to get in the challenge though we will add a 10 mile run in, and it must be videoed ;)

I honestly don't remember the exact numbers, and the total could be off by 75 lbs either way. If I had to guess the squat was 690ish, dead 745ish and the bench 400ish. But like I said, that was in my youth and a few surgeries ago.

I have always been into (at some degree or another) functional strength, and the bench really does not have any basis in functional strength unless you are an offensive lineman, and then only maybe.

My best lifts have always been deadlifts. Then squats, then forms of the OHP. The way I look at it your body was designed to pick heavy stuff up off the ground and then do something with it. The dead, squat and OHP accomplish that.

A few years ago now I converted to a strongman workout. It just made more sense for me. I compete for fun now, and I really don't care where I place. I just go out, do my best, and go home. Sometimes I do well, sometimes I suck. I just make sure not to embarrass myself.

The other day I was at my neighbor's house where he was struggling with rigging something to put his boat back on the trailer properly. When he put it on at the ramp, he got it on all tilted and sideways. He is about a 35 year old tri athlete - and a good one. He's always giving me grief about the kind of workouts I do. I just walked over, put my shoulder under the motor, stood the stern up and slid it into position. That is the kind of strength that is important to me now.

Yeah functional strength is the best kind. Do you do any grip work? I think that is very important for functional strength. I think the most functional lifts are deads, ohp, and pullups, depending on what you are doing. I agree that squats are very functional, but I have always liked those other lifts more. So are you going to start some sort of challenge?

Well, I already have the 6000 lb challenge posted in the stickies in this forum. As for others, yea, I'm up for it.

I do, do grip work. Not crushers though. IMHO they are only good for closing crushers. I do things like pinching 2 45s together and holding them off the ground for time, farmers walk, frame carry, anvil carry, and rolling thunder.

grippers are good for a crushing handshake which you will need for when you meet your daughters future husband! lol!

Im pretty excited to do one of these competitions with jdid sometime this year...

On a typical oly bar a crushing grip may work well, but when you get to things like a 3" axle it is really wrist strength that holds it since it wants to roll out of your hand. That's were things like Rolling Thunder come into play. You can get the handle for it over at IronMind for about $60.

LOL I am seriously laughing my ass off! No he is 5'9 195+ 22 years old I think, I am 6 foot 190 17 years old. He has also done some steroids, I am natural training for just over a year.

I also dropped some weight (193) and my strength went down (bench 315x3, squat 365x5, military 205x5). But ill post them up tonight sorry for takin so fuckin long lol
 
OK I tgook all my videos expect one handed deads ill explain later. But I am gonna post them up tonight i promise. I have been moving the last 2 weeks and working full time also goin to college full time so ive barely even worked out it sucks. I also dropped some weight (193) and my strength went down (bench 315x3, squat 365x5, military 205x5). But ill post them up tonight sorry for takin so fuckin long lol

thanks bros. I really wanna do my squats over though, I did 225x30 before my last cycle. im doin deadlifts and military today. I already did them last week but i cant get them onto the computer so this time im using what i used for the bench/squats/pullups

nice work on all! That squats video was funny because you could see the gap between the plates getting wider and wider! Then at like 1:10 you try to get it back together lol! So why aren't you doing 1 handed deadlifts?

1 handed deadlift: 255x1 no strap, 315x1 strap
pullups: 55x3 (if you count the third rep)

1 handed deadlift: 205??? I'm guessing that was your no strap max?

Nice dude! How did in front feel compared to btn, it seems like it must be a lot harder if you got 14? I just don't have the flexiblilty in my shoulders to do btn, but my legs are really flexible lol! By the way, I just deadlifted 445 today:)


Honestly they are harder because it is a larger ROM, but I have noticed my back shoulders coming out a LOT more. So Im gonna switch it up between BTN Military, regular bb military, push press in front, and db military. Also my endurance sucks. I am not a flexible person lol

good job on the deadlift! Im at 475x5 right now, I already did deadlifts but its on a video camera that cant plug into the computer since its old, so im gonna do them again on tuesday.

Yeah I can stand on a platform and reach like a foot past my toes lol, but I just can't do btn military. I can't reach behind my back and touch the opposite arm:( I like your stratehy of switching it up, I am doing split jerk and loving it, plus I do db military seated.
