getting a post secondary education

Okay...about the doctor comment. I mean, really...yeah, someone who did not attend school could study for the test, maybe pass it, and what not...but really? Would you actually want a so called 'doc' coming in to do brain surgery without him having all the experience of learning from those who know their stuff? This is what universities do....they provide experiences and people that you can learn things from. Doctors flat out need degrees...that is their proof that they have had the adequate education and experience that proves them worthy of doing whatever kind of medical work they have chosen.

There are so many things that I disagree with in this thread that I can't even begin to count them...

buddy28...I agree with you...wholeheartedly....and also vinylgroover...

Warik...sometimes I really wonder what on earth you were thinking when you typed some of your responses on this thread. lol...

Do you need a college degree to be a chemist? By the "rules" governing the chemistry field, YES.

Seeing as how I'm not a chemist, nor have I had more than a basic education in chemistry, no, I'm not smarter than the CEOs, nor do I claim to be-Warik

With that chemist example...
Chemistry studying includes a lot of lab work. In my university more than half the time chemists spend there is in the lab cooking.
You can´t learn that out of books.
You´ll probably say that one can do this at home, too, but it´s really better to do that there ( at least i don´t want wannabe chemists playing around near me).

SAme goes with doctors in the medical field. In university they do not only learn every latin name of muscles, they also practice operations on human corpses. Something you cannot learn just by books or at home (except if your goatslayer maybe ;) ) . Some tests also include practically demonstrating their skills on corpses.

There maybe other fields like IT where one can learn and practice at home, but that doesn´t apply for all.

no, i just wanted to see if brainwashed people (such as yourself) would push school and say it is the way to go. now Warik's reply, on the other hand, put common sense over society's morals, which it turns out, you represent.

have you ever heard about learning for the sake of interest and not because you're told?

also, this thread was not supposed to be about me. im going to stay in school just as a back up basically, i dont like it, nor do i need it. i just wanted to see how many people would give the response you did, compared to how few will give one like Warik.

I wasn't going to respond but I will anyway.......
I have 2 degrees and am working on a third. I come from a background where there are traditionally low expectations made of children so saying that society made me do it doesn't cut. I learn because I enjoy it. Believe it or not alot of people arent slaves to society as you suggest.

It all depends on what you want for yourself. If you'd be happy in the army, then do it. I personally wouldn't be happy in the army, because I don't do very well in a regimented lifestyle, and I don't like the quality of people that join the army where I come from.

On the other hand, I want to make it up the ladder in corporate America, because I want to make a shit-ton of money, but I don't want the responsibility of owning my own business. Do you know how many corporations would promote me to CEO without a college degree, much less a masters degree? I would venture to say not many.

So, I got a degree, and I'm getting an MBA. Is it a waste of time? Maybe. Is there opportunity cost? Yes. But you have to play the game. That's all there is to it.

I'm not brainwashed, I'm smart, and I know how society works. So go join the fucking army, and retire at 39 with a meager pension that won't allow you to put your kids through college (which you probably won't do anyway), and shut your mouth about educated people being brainwashed.

People who think an education is imperative aren't brainwashed, they know how to play the game of life. That's something you should look into while you're in basic training.

At ease corporal.

Last thing I will say on this thread.

This thread seems to have turned into nothing more than petty insults from those who place so much value on the university system, so I will no longer participate.

I never said that I did not value education and that I did not think that people should have an education. My argument was totally based on the idea that people do not "NEED" a college degree to do a job efficiently. The only necessity of a college degree spawns from the fact that some big CEO who has never written a line of code in his life thinks that anyone without a bachelor of computer science degree can't program good enough to work for him, which couldn't be further from the truth.

My argument attempted to place value on self-education. Did you read that? I was actually trying to say nice things about people. I was trying to say that people, even the lowest class of people, can walk into a library or log on to the Internet and learn a host of things - the same, if not more, than they could learn at school. What I've read here is just paragraphs and paragraphs reinforcing the brainwashing that has taught you: "If you don't go to college you won't learn anything and won't succeed! You have to go to college!"

The only reason I'm going to college is because the big CEO of some software company thinks that I need a BS to be a good programmer, even though I'm just as skilled now as <insert random guy who just got his BS>, and if not, could probably learn everything I'm lacking in less than a week by looking on the web. What kind of inefficiency does this place on society where our talented youth, and there are LOTS of talented youths out there, have to wait 4 years before applying their skills for the benefit of society?

If you don't think there's something wrong with America's corporate world's policy of: "no degree - no job," then that says a great deal about your faith in your own intelligence.

Mattcanning...good luck in the military or whatever field you choose. There are many paths to success, each of us must decide what path we will follow. For some, such as myself, I choose to pursue a more "formal" education. Is this the only way to success? Obviously not. In general, does education equate to higher income levels?? Yes. (but there are always exceptions)
Warik, it is disingenuous to use statistical outlyers to support your argument that education is invalid or unnecessary. One can always cite extreme examples such as the success of Bill Gates to "prove" that formal education is not necessary. However, you are intelligent enough to realize that this is statistically such a random event that to use this as the basis of support for your argument is ludicrous. That would be analogous to me arguing that it is safe to jump out of airplanes without a parchute since there have been documented cases of people surviving uninjured after their parachutes failed to deploy.
