George Spellwin - question on board policy

Hey George,

I'd gladly PM or email you, however you don't seem to have that functionality turned on.

You always welcome feedback, comments, and questions regarding the site, so I hope this is ok.

I have a question regarding the bumping of old threads.

I certainly can see why we would not want to constantly have threads started years ago cluttering the front page of C&C, new material is always good, however I do believe their are many valid reasons to want to bump an old thread.

Many times a question is asked that has already been answered or addressed, or many times an old thread is referenced in a new one (e.g. that one thread about the steakhouse was hilarious!). A thread that was good 6 months ago, is likely still good if the content was not time sensitive.

Recently I had most of my "Interview" threads locks. I am not sure who it was by or why, but those threads are not bumped daily, or even weekly. They are bumped when someone asks about them, or sometimes right before a new interview is going to be released to get people primed up for them, you know how important hyping something up can be I am sure.

I don't think those threads contain questionable content, and I have been told by many members that they enjoy the threads, and that they are some of the best threads I have ever done.

For your reference, those threads are here:
http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/showthread.php?t=316971
http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/showthread.php?t=362813
http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/showthread.php?t=376804
http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/showthread.php?t=392935

Considerable time and effort went into creating those threads, and to see them locked is an insult.

But this issue is much bigger then myself, for the sake of the board, I'd like to ask what the official policy is on the bumping of old threads. What constitutes "old?" The term old is subjective and certainly open to interpretation from moderator to moderator.

Also, is the "oldness" of a thread determined by the date of the original post, or the last reply?

I know that not everything can be nailed down to the letter, but I would hope that we can eliminate ambiguity surrounding this particular police and see it enforced more uniformly on the site.

There seems to be a growing number of unwritten "board policy" be it official or unofficial. It looks like direction is given (from you) but how to put it into practice is not interpreted the same way by all your staff.

I appreciate you taking the time to look into this matter.

Thanks,
Lestat

As long as we keep the fight at the carwash thread locked I'm happy.

that was a terrible travesty to the entire board...

IMO - there is absolutely no reason to bump old interview threads. if you want to tell people you are making a new one soon, make one thread and link those for reference. very simple. there are a lot bigger and better things to worry about. it's pointless self promotion. you can accomplish the same goal in more board-friendly manners, as I just described. very simple.

They were not bumped frequently.

We get new users in all the time that have not read these and its a great way for people to get to know some of our long time vets.

Sure you can link to them, but the minute someone reads and posts on it, it will get bumped anyway, so what is the point?

If I was bumping them all the time and you constantly saw interview threads on the front page, I'd say that was TOO much, but my contention is that these posts are quality, provide meaningful info, and shouldn't be locked as long as there are threads on the front page just saying "what's up bro" or quoting a line from a movie.

please keep the shit nobody else cares about in PMs

thanks
I'd gladly do that if GS has his PMs turned on.

Instead of bumping, why not just post a link to the thread where it is ?
like I said, that is fine, by why create a NEW thread just to link to an EXISTING thread?

Cuz there may be a post by you in there and we want to reply and poke fun of you.

Bumping threads for the sake of saying "hey look what I did" is pretty egotistical.

As for the "what's up bro" threads, I can think of many times where you had several threads like that on the front page at the same time. So would you like us to lock/delete those?

No I don't think they should be locked, absolutely not. I am just trying to use them as a frame of reference, why would one be allowed but the other not? The what's up bro threads have their place, but if I were to kill those OR the interviews, I know which one I'd choose.

Am I without ego? No. Am I proud of the interview threads? yes.

I'd just like to get the official board policy on this as to NOT get future interview threads locked and to hopefully get these unlocked.

What it will boil down to is that if I'm going to spend a few days working with someone to put an interview out for all to enjoy and it gets locked, that will discourage me from doing that in the future. If that is the intent, I can live with that, I just want someone to tell me straight up.

One would think that if GS and the admins at EF wanted to prevent older threads from getting bumped, they'd provide for an archive server that won't do joins across the two seperate DBs. Thus forcing a hyperlink solution, and to further it they could limit the bandwidth available to that server.

Just spitballing here though.

Actually, for peeps like me who are relatively new to C&C it would be interesting to see those old threads. I have seen them referenced several times, but I am sometimes unable to find them. If there is another way, I'd like to see what people are talking about.

That is exactly my point.

One must remember to not put these kinds of tools in the evildoer's hands. If you lock threads automatically (which is'nt the case now) when they're bumped, then a person can just bump an old AWESOME thread to just have it locked and destroyed forever. It's like burning the Monica Lisa! Just because some Bozo wanted it to be destroyed. Classic threads should have some kind of "protection" to them, and soince there's no way of collectively determining which are the classics, then there should be some kind of safety system in place.

Let's say I did'nt like Ryan H thread... I would bump it just to have it deleted. That's very unfair to Ryan H and the rest of the members. I "used" the system.

In the end, it's all cyber anyway... fuck it and enjoy. "We are not a democracy." I've heard this before and frankly, I agree with it. No big deal IMO. It IS nice to have an opinion though, like Lestat just did. Thanks and post often.

Bumbing a thread is one thing, bumbing 10-40 threads just for fun is sick.
I thought you enjoyed perkele day? gonelifting day was fun too...

we are allowed to have a little fun around here aren't we?

some old threads are funny, I'm known to venture into the depth of the past myself from time to time (say 2003 and 2002) to see what was this joing back there... I do this ofthen when the first page material is poor.

However, I do not bump eveything I see (except for those "women, does penis size matter" polls in BtS...)

Hi Lestat,

Those are great threads. Here's what I would like the mods to do.

Take those threads and move them to the "Best of Elite Fitness" forum. I think they deserve to live there. Then, I think when you do another Interview, you should reference links to those threads in posts about your new interview.

You should also send me your interviews to publish in the weekly Elite Fitness News. I'm glad to pay you for your articles or interviews if we publish them. And we are more likely to be able to publish them if there are pics.

i totally agree, i was thinking about this the other day when AAP made the best thread ever. I am new also and 90% of the threads on there I had no idea what they were talking about.

i searched for the Steak thread and came up with nothing.

thanks for the response.

I will touch base with you before the next interview and we can discuss.

Is there a reliable way for me to get in touch with you to talk about such business? (email perhaps?)

That's the idea behind the "Best of Elite Fitness" forum. We can keep our most informational threads there. Platinum Members could also use the Platinum Copy feature to move copies of the best threads there - although I will be angry if someone moves something that is not informational.

I use the platinum copy very sparingly for that reason.

It comes in handy sometimes when people get move happy.

You will get a tracking number for every support ticket you open so you can be sure we got the message.

I did follow the link to the carwash thread. The funniest thing about it was when people would post after it became obvious that it was a hoax.
I always read threads right from the beginning, just to know what's going on.

yeah that was the beauty of that thread, people would read it and just reply without seeing that people had already been duped!

I liked how some people got REALLY serious about it.

George, I opened and moved the interview threads to the best of elite board.

And before anyone starts using their brain too fast, it wasn't me who locked them in the first place. Oh yeah, since they are now on a platinum board only platinum members can see them, and we don't have to worry about them popping up on the first page of chat.

LOL

yep......the whole angle of letting newbies see them just got fucked since BEST OF is plat only....
