I have said it to others in private and I will say it here now. This bs is going to end up tearing this board apart, and some of the friendships that have come about because of this board. And that will be the sad part of this whole, sorry mess.

nah, the drama will run rampant on chat for a while, and then things will settle back down.

I don't think any of the other boards on Elite are up in arms over the whole deal.

I assume it has been said here before - but the issue is really just silly if this site were discussing totally legal shit.

like say this were a board all about discussing how pretty horses can be when you brush them all up and then take them out running (which I really think is a good idea for an addition to this board) - stealing a mod password is really not much in that realm. being able to find out that "HorsesMakeMeTingle" is really a woman named Luanne, or being able to ban "DancingHorsey" because he called you a donkey fucker is really no big deal in the grand scheme of things.

but last I checked this board discusses stuff that isn't legal in many countries, and from what I hear *cough*, sometimes there is even an exchange of money for physical goods that originates from contact on this site...
so the consequences of some mod password being known is a bit harsher than over at the horselove board since there are mods on here that are sources - err, ahh, I mean, might know who sources are.

on a side note though, the new eminem album is really good.

Before I was transformed into this shining defender of righteousness you see before you, i bore another name. an ancient and powerful name. These sands can stop time. i give them to the bro who bears my name.

The decision to ban smalls was by no means unanimous. Some of us opposed banning anyone, with the possible exception of Boach, since he stole the password.

In my own case, I argued -- as I told Dballer in private -- that if smalls was to be banned, it was only logical that he be banned as well. (He agreed.) The irony was that while smalls had access to the mod board, there was no evidence that she, or Boach for that matter, revealed the contents of the mod board publicly. Dballer, on the other hand, posted (on Triedia) contents of the mod board he received from a source he has not identified to Elite mods.

In both cases, the two people acted out of personal but understandable motives. There is no evidence that smalls, boach or dballer used info garnered from the mod board for anything more than they claimed. They acted out of their own moral sense.

On the other hand, for the reasons Happy Scrappy is citing, it is important that the board remain secure. But the discussion of AS and scammers is not the only reason. George Spellwin wants Elite to be an open and tolerant place. Thus the mod board is also a place where the status of membership is discussed. Because consensus needs to be reached before someone is banned or reprimanded and because people may have misinformation, it is important to be able to discuss a membership problem openly without publicly communicating misinformation -- convicting someone before there's any kind of inquiry.

I'm not sure what is served by the continuing debate over the particular bannings.

Smalls and Dballer are both entertaining, eccentric characters. Like all strong characters, they come with as many flaws as assets. Whether the tendency to break the rules when they don't seem compatible with our own needs or higher purposes is an asset or a flaw is at the heart of the disagreement here.

Anyway, I'll miss them both.
