First, I go to a "Sport and Health Club" so right off the bat you know it sucks. It has a basketball court, so that's cool but that's where it ends.
I see all sorts of guys there.
There's an older guy in his 40's who competes in triathlons. He's obviously in terrific shape, but I always get annoyed when he makes his way to the free weights area. His favorite thing is standing alternate dumbell curls. He could do 30 or 35 pound dumbells without too much difficulty, but he chooses the 45's. His technique is breathtaking. He swings the dumbells back and forth very quickly for a half minute or so, his arms pumping up and down as if he were sprinting. I don't know what's stopping him from using 60's or 70's.
I was really impressed the other day with another guy who I had never seen before. He was on the hack squat machine and he apparently had just finished a warmup set when he set about collecting every 45 lb plate in the gym. Now, this guy was about 5'10", probably somewhere around 170 lbs. He kind of looked like a sprinter or someone who runs the 400 or 800 meter sprints. But I just had to stare at him when he had 9 plates on each side of the machine. He couldn't fit any more.
After a second, it was all clear. What he did was he went down about three or, at most, four inches before straightening up again. It's possible he went halfway to parallel, but I'm not sure about that. Soon after that he did barbell curls with 25s on each side. Again, he would stop well short of even a 90 degree angle between his upper arm and his forarm.
There's a Gold's not too far away that I'm going to be having a look at soon. I need to go somewhere where they're not playing lite hits very softly in the background and you can just about hear a pin drop.
