here is my big 3.

Flat bb bench
Incline db bench
dips leaning forward (I usually get my pard to pull my legs back)

Incline dumbell presses and weighted dips to be more specific for me at least.

As for the pushup idea I myself do these but only at the end of the workout. My clients who I have doing more traditional bodybuilding style routines and are more advanced on chest day after there last exercise which usually is an isolation exercise I make them superset it with pushups. By then they can only do so much even with the extra assistance of their triceps coming into play. :)
