Did R. Lee Ermey win the Academy Award for that role? I've always wondered that, as I'm sure that I read he was at least nominated at the time. He hosts a pretty interesting show on THC these days called "Mail Call". He's pretty funny on that show as well, as he plays a toned-down version of his drill-seargent(sp?) role.

Zerxes,

Just a little tid-bit of information. The Army calls them "Drill Seargents". The Marine Corps calls them "Drill Instructors". You wouldn't want to upset any Marines out there! LOL!:D

they hired him to consult on the film and suggest how the character should act.
Kubrick was so impressed that the guy could just swear and yell at someone non-stop without repeasting himself for like 5 minutes that he hired him to do the role.
he has done pretty much that sort of role (police captain, gym teacher, etc) in most all he has been in.

Awww, memories. Health inspections were the greatest. Nothing like a room full of women in their underwear showing off rashes, blisters and walking around in circles like idiots. You have got to love the Marines.

Nope, he didn't win. The only Kubrick film that one an Oscar was "2001: A Space Odyessy" for visual effects of something of that nature.
