USPS is a government agency. It works under laws that Congress passed.
Your privacy rights (against illegal search and seizures) are protected.
But on the other side of coin, if you send something illegal through USPS, that by itself is a crime.

Fedex and other private services. They just make you sign and that signatures gives them all the fucking rights to do whatever.
You don't have any privacy rights there.

Right and wrong. While private carriers can open any packages they want without repercussions, they can't turn them over to the police. If they are in the habit of doing this then the courts will find that they are acting as an extention of the law enforcment agency, and thus subject them to the same constituional restrictions as the police. The obvious problem here is this; while you might not go to jail, they certainly aren't giving you your gear back.

It takes quite a bit for the USPS to open any packages. Usually, they have to be tipped off about some illegal activity. Then they x-ray the package and determine if they need to open it or not, most of the time they don't. The bad part is, if the USPS is watching a person for some illegal activity, they won't always bust the first package suspected as illegal substances or goods. They will watch and record the quantity of packages and their contents. As for being oily or leaking, they almost never open those packages, only if the package is soaked so bad that they can not read the address. Usually they will put it in a plastic bag and deliver it.

Where would you want to go to court if you get a package seized? In state court or federal court. If you us USPS it becomes a fed issue and if you used a private it goes to state or county court. I take my chances in the state court.

Use DHL. They're fairly new and want to make customers happy. I don't think they give a shit what's in the package. I've had no probs with them at all so far.

I had DHL open a package I was sending and then call me up and say I have to come get it because what was in it wasn't what I wrote on the packing slip. Not gear though.

Depending on what you are charged with will depend where you go to court. For instance, if you are charged with using the mail to commit a felony, you will be charged in federal court and you cannot remove it to state court. However, if you are charged possession of a controlled substance by the prosecutors in your state, then you will be charged in the state court. Unfortunately for the accused, you have choice which venue is used.
