Fruit Only In The Morning

PANTS

New member
I train around 10:30 AM.
What would be the effect on Glycogen levels (and my physique) if I was to eat only fruit (2-3 servings) first thing in the morning?

The "effect" would be minimal, for most of the fructose will be stored in the liver for later use. In addition, if only fruit was consumed, the liver (considering it would be nearly filled w/ glycogen) would supply the main source of fuel to stabilize blood glucose levels attributed to the cardiovascular exercise. (that of course includes some muscle glycogen). I doubt that eating fruit before cardio is the best way to achieve the maximum level of lypolisys. I do see a possibility of gluconeogenisis happening, with some muscle proteins - amino acids- being broken down for fuel.

perhaps a piece of fruit later on during day alongside a big meal. why do you want fruit, you have trouble eating a lot when you wake???? I do. Been trying to down about 25oz water right upon waking up, let you know how it goes soon

a peice of fruit wont affect your body any different than a bowl of oatmeal they both have the same amount of calories. a choice of fruit would be good for antioxidants and vitamins

Actually fructose, in this particular case --more prominent then others, will affect his/her progress. Mostly due to the liver glycogen that will be refilled; thus, during exercise, glucagon will break down liver glycogen levels (first) to supply energy for the workout and keep blood sugar steady (halting fat-loss); also, if the liver is full of glycogen while the muscle tissue is not, gluconeogenisis can occur, which is nightmare in cotrisol terms.

could you please explain this a little further?

When the body is in a low-insulin state w/ no glucose to go around (so to speak), other substances can be converted to glucose in the liver and kidney through a process called
gluconeogenesis (‘gluco’ = glucose, ‘neo’ = new, ‘genesis’ = the making). This includes certain amino acids, especially alanine and glutamine. Which are basically derived from the breakdown of muscle tissue.

Thanks Mr X.
What about Fruit (2 servings) and a Protein Shake (Casein/Whey mix) before mid-morning workout?

Nope, again it's the same concept...you would get better results replacing that fruit w/ something else.

Mr. X, do you suggest not eating an apple 30min prior to working out with weights in the afternoon. I do it. I think that it gives me a little boost of energy as I don't eat carbs all day until then. I also do 45 min of lowintesity cardio 1st thing in morning.Would you suggest another source of carbs pre-workout? No carbs?

Try adding dextrose instead of the fruit, you'll see a difference. Pre-workout I would suggest taking about 1/2-1 tbsp. mct oil to increase ketone production.

I don't really think that I am ever in ketosis as I eat about two hundred carbs per day...that is: 90-100gr dextrose directly post workout then another 90-100gr loGI carbs 90 minutes later. Also an apple 30min prior to lifting. On nontraining days I only eat ~30gr carbs with dinner. Are you suggesting replacing the apple with 1/3 or so scoop of dextrose(suppdirect 75gr per scoop). What is mct oil? Could it help my situation? I don't have ketostix to determine whether in ketosis. I could add in the dextrose to my shake that I eat about 1.5hrs before working out, or would that not do the trick (too far away from lifting). Thanks for advice Mr. X.

I doubt you're in ketosis if you're at 200g carbs a day. MCT can help anyone's situation, but it's most likely going to be an option for the low-carb dieter. For you, I'd stick to dextrose.

Not the best, probably too low of GI, but it's better than nothing. So, you're fine.

I am cutting.
What would you suggest pre-workout to go with Protein shake.
Or protein shake alone, with Oil mix?

I would suggest some whey/caseinate protein mix, no oils or carbs needed.

Ok gonna go with this:
Pre-workout:Whey/Casein mix shake
2 brown toast with honey on.

Post-workout: 2 servings fruit
Whey Protein Shake.

I'm interested in this MCT theory you state. When, how and why?
Thankx again,
P

Again, you are doing the SAME thing....fruit PW is NOT a smart idea. I've explained before, it's LOW-gi and it gets stored in the liver.

What exactly do you want to know about MCT?

Err, care to explain that again?
Yeah OK got the picture now.
About MCT: when would this be best taken?

MCT is all depending on the diet, I wouls day 3x a day would work, but you should try 1x a day before your workout because MCT tends to give some people stomach problems.

I'm currently taking a UDO's Oil type mix, but I guess you mean something like MCT Fuel by Twinlab?

Yes, I mean MCT by Twinlab, BUT you have MCT in UDO so don't worry about buying MCT. Just use the UDO's choice, I love Udo's products he never goes wrong.
