They just wanna get close to you. Can you blame them?
I know. Last year this happened too when I had lotsa fresh produce laying out. I ridded my whole house of it and STILL had them. Then I went to open the pantry and they were swarming around a clean bottle of balsamic vinegar. They're relentless! 
I got an idea...go back to where they are..and just stand there with your mouth wide open. When you get a bunch of them in there close your mouth and swallow. That'll teach those lil bastards
Ok, this makes me feel like a poor housekeeper! I'm not I swear!

I used a pet safe bug killer and they were gone in a flash.
the seem to die pretty easy.

you could bring one cantelope into your house and have fruit flies galore. dont feel too bad.
because i have no kids i keep a pretty damn clean house and I have them when i bring the cantelopes and tomatoes in
