who here is doing front squats..I tried a few sets at the end of my quad workout tonite..and i really liked them..i was able to get real low, a problem have with reg squats (just cant seem to get passed parallel)..looking for any pointers and please no offense guys but if your idea of heavy squats is 225 please dont comment..thanks!!

ha ha look who it is.. i was gonna ddress this thread to you but havent seen you in awhile lol..

im not really sure i went super lite on them just to get feel..foot placement? is it better to go below parallel? (saw coleman doing these in his video and seems to stop right about para keeping constant tension on those quads) throw in any thoughts BD!!!

beast,
I use to love'em until i tore my left knee up doing them. I love the sweep they give your quads. I probably did them for close to a year, but now am a little gun shy about trying them again.

damn bro sorry bout that..would you say they were harder on your knees than reg squats?

Myself, I go as deep as possible. Foot placement just like a regular squat (whatever is comfortable).

One thing I do is cross over my arms, instead of holding the bar like I just finished a clean...a little easier on the wrists. That's about the only thing I do differently from most people.

Not much else to say about it...

I do zerchers now instead of front squats. When I did them though I used a fairly wides stance and really focused on getting my hips back so I could get down to full depth.

Not really gonna hit the vastus medalis with zerchers though?

I like the zerchers much better than normal front squats as well. They also help build my erectors a little, which is good for my deadlift.

I hope to front squat 412 in the next month.

They will wear them pretty good. I think it was just a freak injury that happened. I NEVER went heavy on them, always trying to keep my form. Im a horrible person to ask about parallel. I rarely hit parallel on squats, just above. Sorry, i just dont have the flexibility in my knees. Every now and again i will hit parallel, but it is by accident because it hurts to damn much.

good luck with em. I may try them again someday, but im not a real fan of legs. So i try to get in and get the hell out of the gym on leg days.

im rediscovering them after a long layoff b/c of a knee injury from hockey!! Going to do it smart and slowly work my way up with the weights and focusing on form first..hope i can develop some huge tree trunks lol!!

I am doing front squats from time to time b/c I heard (though I couldn't swear I experienced it) it puts less strain on your lower back (than regular squat)

That would be dependant on your foot position. Closer together with toes pointed more forward than out should crush your vastus. Just keep your back straight so you don't put the bar down on your legs. Plus for focus on vastus you don't need as much rom.

Thanks for the clarity Scotsman!!!

i keep my form just like ronnie's. real deep and no locking out. keeps tension on the quads the entire time and is way hard.

RC goes to parallel, not below (at least in his video)..
