Christ almighty, I am beginning to think I am going to have to start headbutting some people.
Tonight at practice, I was having them (the HS power lifting team) do cleans from the floor with bumper plates. I had 185 on the bar and was planning on showing the clean and the continental. So I have my soft belt on, and continental the bar up, and while I have it in the receiving position and am in the middle of explaining how I just got from my ab to my chest, the basketball coach comes over, flagrantly interrupts me and:
Douchebag coach: "What kind of lift was that?"
Me: "Do you mean what I am in the middle of doing right now as a demo?"
Douchebag coach: "Yea. And what is that (pointing to my soft belt) your WalMart shelf stocking back support?"
Realizing where this is going, and that I have my whole team watching I decide to take action. He is standing in front of me on the platform about 3 feet away. I drop the bar with no attempt at controlling the bounce, and one of the 25's (steel) pops off. He has to get a little quick on his feet and takes a few steps back.
Me: "That, sir, was a continental clean. It is an exercise to develop explosive movement of a heavy weight from the ground. It is the first movement in the Olympic clean and jerk, which I am sure you have seen on TV many times when the Olympics are on. As for my belt, it is a Rehband back support. In the strongman world it is commonly referred to as a soft belt. I use it at mid to upper range weights before I need to transition to a hard belt for maximum support at the maximum range of my lifting capacity. Now, as you can see, I am working with my team, so if you have more questions about strength training or specific exercises, I would be happy to help you after my practice."
Douchebag coach: "Well, I suppose if that is what you are into. I hope you know that you wont be walking in a few years because of what the squats you do to you knees."
And with the, he turned and walked off. One of the general strength coaches was sitting there behind me listening. After practice, he came up to me and told me what an ass this guy is and that he is always in a dick measuring contest with every other coach at the school.
Thank god tomorrow morning I squat.
