A buddy of mine wanted to start working out so he got a gym membership and I took him up to the gym last night. We were going to do a few basic workouts, bench, squats, deads, etc. So we go to the bench first I put on a little weight for him to warm up on and so I can check his form. The first thing I noticed was that his left wrist was cocked to the side at a VERY bad angle and that the bar was leaning to the right side. After watching him for a minute I noticed that his left arm was clearly longer than his right. I asked him about it and he said that awhile ago he dislocated his left shoulder.

I can't get him to do bench with anything close to proper form and I know he is going to hurt himself. He is also having a tough time with dumbbell bench. Should I have him keep working with dumbbells or only do flys and pec dec?

I've dislocated both of my shoulders and flat BB bench is extremly painful for me. DB bench not so much but for me to eliminate all shoulder pain I mostly concentrate on DB inclines.

I have had the same problem with dislocated shoulders. I find that flat bench with any type of bar puts a lot of stress on the shoulder. I have since moved to dumbell presses with a slight incline up to a larger incline. Also, delcine works well. Maybe have him start with some push-ups to strengthen the shoulder/tri/chest combination and increase his range of motion. I had to do this to promote my shoulders being able to have a range of motion.
