Since so many people seem to be having trouble, here are some things to check.

System Requirements Back

HushMail is a Web-based email application. To run HushMail, you just need access to the Internet and a fairly up-to-date web browser.
The following are the system requirements for HushMail:

Browsers

Microsoft Internet Explorer™ 4.x, 5.x, or 6.x (Recommended)
Netscape Communicator™ 4.x (Limited Support)
Operating Systems
HushMail is compatible with Microsoft's Windows™ 95, 98, NT, 2000 and XP. It will run under Unix and Linux using Netscape 4.x.

HushMail is known to work best with Internet Explorer 6.0 and Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Internet Explorer has the ability to store the Hush Encryption Engine Java™ Applet locally, which greatly reduces the amount of data you must download when logging in to HushMail.

JavaScript
In order to use HushMail, you will need to enable JavaScript in your Web-browser. JavaScript is enabled by default unless you have changed your browser settings.

How do I enable JavaScript?

How do I enable JavaScript?
For Netscape™:

Pull down the "Edit" menu
Select "Preferences"
On the "Preferences" screen, select "Advanced"
Check the box labelled "Enable JavaScript"

For Internet Explorer™:

Pull down the "Tools" menu
Select "Internet Options"
Select the "Security" tab
Select "Internet"
Change "Security level for this zone" to "Default Level"
Move the slider to "Medium"
If you are not comfortable with Internet Explorer's "Medium" security level, you can custom edit your security preferences by selecting "Custom". However, you may need to experiment to avoid disabling features of HushMail.

Java™
HushMail is a Java™ based application. You will need to enable Java™ on your browser. Java™ is enabled by default unless you have changed your browser settings. How do I enable Java?

Pull down the "Tools" menu
Next, select "Internet Options"

Scroll down to the "Java™ VM" section
Check the box that says, "JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled"

For Netscape™:

Pull down the "Edit" menu
Next, select "Preferences"
Select "Advanced"
Check the box that says, "Enable Java™"

NB: If you are using Internet Explorer it may be useful to download the latest Java Virtual Machine - http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm40.htm.

Helpful Fixes Back

Make sure to Close your browser after all procedures described here. Be sure that every browser instance is closed before restarting.

Cache Issues
I receive JavaScript errors or other unusual errors when I try to log in my HushMail Account. What should I do?

You should clear out temporary files associated with HushMail to ensure that you have all of the most recent updates. This is the most common "quick fix" for any issues you might have with HushMail.

For Microsoft's Internet Explorer™:

To clear temporary files:

Pull down the "Tools" menu.
Select "Internet Options".
In the section entitled "Temporary Internet Files", click "Delete".
When prompted choose check the box that says "Delete all offline content".
Click "Yes" to delete temporary files.
To clear cached Java applets:

Pull down the "Tools" menu.
Select "Internet Options".
In the section entitled "Temporary Internet Files", click "Settings".
Click "View Object".
If you see an object entitled "Hush Encryption Engine" right click on it and select "Delete".
Other objects in this directory may interfere with HushMail, so if you are unsure of any of them, it's okay to delete them. If they are needed, they will automatically be downloaded again.

For Netscape™:

Reload the page by pressing Shift and clicking Reload at the same time.

Internet Explorer Security Settings
Internet Explorer is asking me security questions. What should I reply?

Internet Explorer often behaves strangely if security settings are not set to the default level of "Medium".

Pull down the "Tools" menu
Select "Internet Options"
Select the "Security" tab
Select "Internet"
Change "Security level for this zone" to "Default Level"
Move the slider to "Medium"
If you are not comfortable with Internet Explorer's "Medium" security level, you can custom edit your security preferences by selecting "Custom". However, you may need to experiment to avoid disabling features of HushMail.

Depending on how the security settings in Microsoft's Internet Explorer™ are configured, Hush users may be prompted to answer a few security questions. Answer, "Yes" when asked the following questions. Answering, "No" to these questions will result in functionality problems.

"Scripts are usually safe. Do you want to allow scripts to run?"
Click "Yes"
"Do you want to allow scripts to access Java applets?"
Click "Yes"

A bug in Microsoft's Internet Explorer™ prompts the following dialogue boxes. The bug causes Internet Explorer™ to think HushMail's Java applet is an Active X control. HushMail does not use ActiveX controls.

"A script is accessing some software (an ActiveX control) on this page which has been marked safe for scripting. Do you want to allow this?"
Click "Yes"
"A script is accessing some software (an ActiveX control) on this page which has been marked safe for scripting. Do you want to allow this?"
Click "Yes"

Internet Explorer also occasionally raises the following error without reason.

"This page contains both secure and non-secure items. Do you want to display the non-secure items."
Click "Yes" - It will NOT compromise you security.

Customized security settings may cause other issues. If are having difficulties, it's always a good idea to try setting your security level to "Medium".

Internet Explorer Advanced Options
I am still getting errors when using Internet Explorer. What else can I try?

In Internet Explorer, you will have the fewest problems if your Advanced Options are set to default settings. If you are having difficulties, restoring default settings may resolve them.

To restore default Advanced Options:

Pull down the "Tools" menu
Select "Internet Options"
Select "Advanced Options"
Click "Restore Defaults"

Thawte certificate must be valid
My browser says I have an expired Thawte certificate. How do I renew it?

Some Hush users have older browsers and, when the certificates they contain expire, users must follow the procedure to renew the certificates. To install a new Thawte™ Certificate onto a Web browser.

For Netscape™

In some cases, if you are using Netscape™, you must remove your old certificate before installing the new, up-to-date certificate. To do this:
Go to Communicator -> Tools -> Security Info.
Click on "signers" under "certificates".
Select "Thawte Server CA".
Click delete.
Access http://www.thawte.com/serverbasic.crt
Continue through the installation dialog.
For the name of the certificate, enter "Thawte Server CA".

For Microsoft's Internet Explorer™

Access http://www.thawte.com/serverbasic.crt
When prompted, choose to open the file from its current location.
When the certificate information box appears, choose to "install" the certificate.
For the name of the certificate, enter "Thawte Server CA".

Updating your browser
I would like to install the latest version of Internet Explorer. What's the easiest way to do it?

Downloading the latest version of Internet Explorer is one of the most certain ways of resolving any problems you might have with HushMail. Internet Explorer 6 is known to cause the least support problems out of all available browsers.

To update your Internet Explorer

Click on your "Start" menu.
Select "Windows Update".
Select "Product Updates" on the web page that appears.
Choose to download and install "Internet Explorer 6".

mine comes up with "bad database" and some other shit i just dont understand!!!! why did people fuck with something that worked fine? this pisses me off, cause im no computer wiz and all that shit zyg put on this thread means shit to me!!! i need to get to my e-mail so who ever was the person that had this great idea please help my dumb ass out......

Not that I can fix your prob boss, but I can try. Just a reminder to those with problems, details are needed for anyone to be of anyhelp. So simply stating you get an error, please say at what point of the login it occurs. So for example boss, describe what is shown when you got the mail link. Do you see the page where it asks for you to log in? Do you log in and then get the error?

When you have your browser open, click on "help" on the top menu bar and then "about" what version is your browser? All these small details go a long way in helping people help you.

ok........i log in with my name......then the loading applett comes up......then it asks for passphrase, which i enter and the i hit login.....then a little gray screen pops up and says hushmail blah blah-bad data something and then just sits on the passphrase screen and never gets to my e-mail.

Xp isn't the prob unless he has XP home. I've ben running XP since the RC1 release and it's worked flawlessly

Not saying that xp is the problem. But XP didn't ship with the Java Virtual Machine... you have 2 choices. Microsoft VM or Sun's VM. You would think that Sun's VM would be a better choice, considering they invented the language, but Sun's VM wouldn't run hushmail for me at all. So, what I'm saying is that if you have XP, make sure you are running the Microsoft VM plugin. It is obtainable through windows update. If you're already using the Sun plugin, it can be disabled in the control panel.

:)

Okay gang I can understand some of you are not happy with the change, but it was a very good idea. First off the servers are now overseas and can not be obtained by the US government which means more security for us all. It alos allows us to communicate with those that use PGP, which is a cool feature.

Now, I made this post and stuck in an effort to help you guys who are having problems. I will do what little I can, but I also wanted this thread to be a place where you guys could post specifics about your problems in the hopes someone a little more "in the know" may see them and offer help as well. With that being said, if you guys are having problems, please use this thread constructivly to post detailed information regarding your issue. Just complaining doesnt help anyone.

If you are having a problem and would like some help, please pass along the following info and post the details in this thread.

1- What OS are you running?
2 - what browser and version?
3- are you behind a firewall or procy server?
4 - give detailed overview of your login (obviously dont mention you passphrase) and any errors that occured in the login process.

Mail was switched over on the fly. Teh transition was almost seamless, however it did take 24-48 hours for everyones existing mail and address books to be copied over. Aside from that a handfull of people are having problems using the FREE mail and of course are doing nothing but bitchen. If your contact is among them he could be having problems, but I cant say for certian.

I posted this thread in an effort to help those who are having problems but all I see are people who are too busy bitchen so I will likely just delete this thread.

enough is enough i need to get into my e-mail!!!!!!!! someone needs to tell me what the fuck to do.

It sure would have been nice to have added a mail sent sucessfully banner because i just sent out 2 e-mails and have no clue if they were ever sent! maybe the bugs will get worked out!! Peace ...RADAR

I dont understand this. When you compose a message its done in a new window. when you hit send the wondow closes and after its sent the message goes into your sent items folder, how much more confirmation do ya need?

I get the same error as boss. I am using 2000 PRO

Did you go through all the recommended steps outlined in the first post?

The first error I was getting for the past few days was:

java.lang.nullpointerexception error.

Now I get this long error message when i try to connect with any EF e-mail account.

This is what it says:

Error authenticating with the server - hushclone.java.security.keystoreexception: java.net.ProtocolException: com.hush.core.client.net.Error: Server Error Private key operation from (IP address here) presented a nonce that's not in the database.

Ryvor, I just tried to log in a second ago and got that error to so it must be a server issue. Im sure there working on that.

Yeah, I guess they just fixed it because I was able to log on with another account just now. But I'm still getting the first error, the java.lang.nullpointerexception error with my main account.

ok for my e-mail........im still fucked!!!! eveything goes good up to entering passphrase......i enter my passphrase and then BAM......a microsoft little window pops up and says........com.hush.core.security.format.bad data format execption.........what the hell does that mean? i had someone who knows about computers look at it and she couldnt figure it out either........so i really need to get to my e-mail and NOW......what can i do? anyone...anyone...anyone?:bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :bawling:

Have you gone through the steps I have outlined in the first post of this thread?

If I recall your using IE 5.5, goto microsofts site and download IE 6 and try it again.

boss, to figure out if it's something on your end or something wrong with the program. Create another account and try to log in with that. If you succeed, then it's most likely not a problem on your end and a problem on their end. If it still doesn't work, then upgrade to IE 6. I personally don't want to upgrade to IE 6 as I know that it won't fix the problem. I'm able to access EF mail with another account that I created so I know that my regular EF account got screwed up some how.

I'm still can't get into my email account. I tried the steps you outlined, Zig , but they didn't help me. I downloaded explorer version 6 but that didn't help either. I'm not getting any error messages or anything. When I try to log in it says that there is no account with that name. I never even get to the prompt that asks me for my passphrase. It's probably something simple but I'm just not that good with this stuff.

Thanks for making this sticky; maybe everybody can get their probs. fixed soon!!

a question bro

ZYG i am not having trouble getting in to mail but all of my contacts are gone, is there anything to do about this? please let me know what to do if anything, thanks bro:(

I consider myself pretty computer literate (worked with them all my life and am a tech by trade). However, I dont have access to the systems the mail accounts reside on or anything so aside from trying to guide people to fixes on their end, there isnt anything I can do. Thats why I created this thread and made it a sticky. I was hoping people would actually give details accounts of what they are doing and the problems they are having. However some people would rather just bitch in this thread instead of postung anything productive which makes it less likely that someone on the inside at EF will read this thread and actually try and fix accounts with problems.

I have two elite accounts and the first one is working fine, the second one I have been getting this message in the results box when I try to migrate the account. I have contacted hush support every day for the past week and received no help.

Attempting to upgrade key record.
If you experience difficulties, email this data to support.
Old private alias: 2e.................................................
Private key lookup on old private alias failed.
Will try new private alias.
Private key has been upgraded. Checking to make sure public key has.
Public key not yet upgraded. Fatal error!
Fatal error!
hushclone.java.security.KeyStoreException: No public key found.

Needless to say, I am unhappy about the situation and was hoping it would be solved by now. I really wish we would have been given more notice about this upgrade or FAILURE to upgrade so I could've prepared for a possible loss.

this new mail can suck my balls. I mean this sucks George! I can't delete anything because I get a page error when the fagot little box pops up to confirm. It is just a blank box so I can't delete, move or anything. I think I need to find a new site. This one is always slow, broken, these gay pop up boxes that come up all the time. Fuck!~

guys screw elitemail, just get ziplip like I did. It shouldn't have to be this hard to upgrade, even after I followed all the steps....

george, zyg.......anyone.......please help me if you can i really need to get to my e-mail.....this really sucks and i just dont know what to do to get in!!!!

Something still isn't right w/ my account. Maybe it's something I'm doing, I don't know. When I type in my add. is says that there is no account with that name. I have tried the suggestions listed on this thread but nothing helps. Is anybody still having problems? I haven't seen many posts on this thread lately. anybody have any suggestions? I'm despirate! Thanks in advance.

Guys,

Please email:

[email protected]

They are eager to help. Let them know as much as you can about the problem. For example:

Your Operating System
Web Browser
The exact Error message
Security settings.

For best results, upgrade to IE 6.0 and then email them. We will get everything worked out -- I promise.

I was hoping I would not have to join this discussion. But I am having serious problems now. I can get in my but it keeps saying 0 messages. I usually get at least 10 a day. And I have also sent messages to myself and it is not getting them.

It worked fine when I had [email protected] but it would not decrypt.

So i got one at [email protected] 2 days ago and now nothing.

damn.
