For those of you with breast implants....

Hi. I'm seriously considering breast implants at the end of the year (after this competitive season). I've done ton of research and have a list of docs I'm planning to meet with. With all the research I've done, I can't get too much info. on how it affects a fitness/competitive lifestyle. For those who compete(figure/fitness) do you feel that it gave you an advantage...being more symmetrical and proportioned?? I'm a 34 A-B (A at comp. time) and I'm positive I want to fit into a 34D. I'm 5'3 and 127lbs off season, 117 on season. Has anyone been this small and gone up this much?? And have you noticed any problems with training and competeting? THanks!!

The size a good doc will recommend for you will be proportional to your body - not a specific size that you are envisioning. (Sort of like weight can be irrelevant but bodyfat is more important as a goal...) If it helps you at all, I went from a A-B to a D, somewhere between 34 & 36 (depending on on / off season) and I'm 5'7, 160 off season, 130-135 on stage. I have a very broad back & shoulders and the D's are very proportional on me.

I started competing in BB 7 months after I got my girls done. Hasn't been a problem. If anything it definitely will make a difference as you compete at the higher levels - it is sad, but you simply won't be judged at the top of the list if you are "flat". And of course, "flat" is what happens when you cut down to like 8% bf. Its one of the silly ironies of female competition. The only issue I've ever had w/ the implants w/ that it took a few months to be able to comfortably train chest because the scar tissue (I had unders done) had to be broken up some. Since then (6 yrs ago) no problems.

The only thought I would have about fitness (not figure) is that the boobs might throw off the gymastic part of the equation as it does add a new shape and possibly a small shift in your weight distribution than you may be used to. However you see plenty of competitors who have them.

Mine are on top of the muscle. I'm a 34D and 117 at this moment. I'm considering having them taken down a cup size. They've been a little too big for my body since I got them. I told the Dr. I wanted a full C, but he seemed to like D's better.

When you first get them done, they'll be all cute and perky (and sore). Mine have dropped - don't get me wrong - they look good, natural - but they're too big. Mr. S had never been with anyone who had implants before me and wasn't "thrilled" with them at first. But now he forbids me to go much smaller! lol Silly boy!

At our size, you can't wear the cute shirts without looking like a hooker because your boobs are too big! IMO.....go with a small to med C. Good luck!

Mine are partials- half over the muscle & half under... Im 5'6", 34Cs(full Cs) & wouldve gone bigger. For competitions, im prob the smallest gal out there.. most are like Ds and bigger. Its def. an advantage for competion :)

I been looking into getting mine done. I was a 34 DD at one point in my life but since getting comp ready I have gone down to a 34 B actually right before the show it is more like an A. I was thinking of a D or even possibly a DD not sure still researching I have broad shoulders and pretty sure I could carry a D or DD.

A good doc will be able to determine a good proportionate size for you - its best if you don't pre-determine too much what you want. That's why you go & talk to several different docs if you can get them to do free consults.

Most here charge for a consult :( but then take the consult off the total fee when you get it done.

I am going Tuesday for my first consult. I used to be a C now I'm in between A/B cup. I am wanting to go back to a full C now. Definetly under the muscle for me, not sure where he or I want the incision. There are alot of photo galleries out there that show women going from A's to D's and so on. Here are a few web pages. www.justbreastimplants.com www.breastimplants411.com www.breastimplants4you.com

Wish me luck!!!

Mine is charging $60 for the consult. I was surprised at first but it seems to be like that at several surgery centers here now. The dr I am going to came recommended from a friend so I don't have a hard time paying for the consult.

I totally agree! I went from a small small 34-b to a FULL 34-D, can fit into 34-DD. 500 cc's under the muscle... I'm 5'6.5'', and about 118lbs. it's SO hard to find tops!.. my actual waist is only 22, maybe 23 inches.. if something fits in the chest area, it's WAY too big everywhere else. Dresses? Forget about it! lol.. It's very difficult to even get them taken in as much as I need to in order for the dress to fit my chest, as well as my waist, hips, etc..

When I get mine redone, I'll def. go one size smaller. A full C would have been perfect.

Wow - I'm 5'7", I'm 34 D - got 425 & 475 cc. You must be the "big girls" in town ;) I'm pretty happy w/ mine, though I don't like when I get "off season" - I start to look like a linebacker.

My GF just got hers done I will probably go the same Dr. she did. She went from a B to a C. I just talked to her and she already said I kinda wish I went bigger.

How long was her recovery? (I may be getting a tummy tuck too, after two kids, alot of stretch marks and extra skin after 40 lbs weight loss I need it) but I am hoping to be up and going by the Classic. I am going to try and schedule it for mid February. Working around the kids is hard, another reason to stick with a C cup for me, I can only imagine my preschooler going to school saying mommy's got big boobs now. :)

I have a question. What do they feel like to have on your chest, I would imagine they would feel heavier, but do they feel harder, like when you roll over sleeping etc. Do they feel anything like breast milk engorgment? the hardness, pain? ??? I don't know what else to compare them to.... how long does it take to feel like they are normal and yours??

Her recovery is slow. She is still very weak and it has been nearly a month. In her case I think it will take a bit longer to heal. She is also not a health nut. I am hoping that the healthier you are the easier the revcovery. However she told me that her Dr. said girls with well developed pec muslce have harder recovery when going under the muscle as they real have to tear the fibers to put the implants in.

CaliGirl my GF says that she has days where the feel like rocks and she is so itchy from the skin streaching that she wishes she almost never got them done. She still can't sleep on her back or side yet but remember she is in recovery mood. Once she is fully recovered I am sure she will be fine.

As soon as the healing is complete - the scar tissue, the nerves settling in, and just the general settling in, they feel just like yours. I never felt like I had a foreign anything on my body. Ever. For the several months I couldn't sleep on my stomach which was hard because I was a stomach sleeper. Then I developed this way to sleep w/ my chest propped up on my hands, sleeping on my stomach - which managed to hyperextend my back. Had to stop that. It wasnt' until about a year ago I was able to get a massage laying flat on my chest w/o a towel rolled up to prop up my chest a bit. The only issues I have now are needing a couple layers of good sports bras if I plan to run at all (e.g. treadmill) and the girls tend to get in the way when I'm doign a cable row or some sort of crunch or some such yoga / pilates somethign or other.

The only other time I really am aware of them is when I diet down for a competition - around 10% bf I can start to see the rippling of them, but since that's not really a bodyfat I maintain, I don't worry about it too much.

Oh yea, if you do a serious chest flex or something like a cable fly, you do see that the implants get stretched a bit - like a balloon being pressed against.

I still dont' consider that a big deal relative to the good stuff about having them.

Sassy did you go over or under the muscle? Also how were the done I forget the technical term for it but I think the best option is threw the armpit.

Thanks for answering, I have debated because when I'm done nursing I will go down at least a size if not two. My Mom has them and hers are great, I had never though to ask her how they felt.... also with my sport, I'm on the groud alot flying around can be high impact at times, some girls have them with no problem, but I do know one, whos were over the muscle that popped... she was dubbed "the uniboober" for a few weeks ;)

Thanks for the help girls. I will let you know how my consult goes.

QT, I think Sassy said in a previous thread that hers are unders and her incision is periarealor or thru the nipple.

I was naturally big boobed. 36DD before having a child, then I went up to a JJ cup when I was nursing for a year. Lost weight and was down to a D. I needed a lift as well as implants. I went under the muscle to prevent sagging in the future but had complications with scar tissue and infection. Mine were done a few yrs. ago and I definitely know they're there at times but I'm still glad I got it done. It has definitely affected my training though. I had 450's, high profile, under the muscle, and was a DD when the swelling went down.

Right now I'm on HRT and my boobs are growing. I'm not liking it. I'll be 40 in a few months and I never thought my boobs would be growing at this age!

One thing to consider when trying to decide if you're gonna go over or under the muscle is having mamograms done when you're older. With unders they can perform a regular mamogram but with overs they can only use ultrasound which is not as effective in detecting breast cancer. If breast cancer runs in your family I would strongly advise going with unders.

Thanks for all the reply everyone! I'm concerned over the complications (infection, leaking, contracture, and autoimmune responses) so I'm taking plenty of time to think about it...I you guys don't mind me asking, how much did you pay?

Damm I thought 8k was expensive.

I went to a plastic surgery expo today. I found Dr. that does free conuslts so I gave him my number. I am debating gel or saline still. The gel is typicaly 2K more but then you never have to stress about them.

My office said between $5000-5800. If gels were available in the US I would be getting those. Everything I have read on the girls who have been doing the study for them say they love them and they feel and look natural which to me would be worth the extra 2k. You are lucky they are available in CA, who knows when the FDA will approve them here. I am getting excited about my consult now, Tuesday can't come soon enough!!! ;)

Yeah my gf got the gel I am leaning towards them. I will know better after my consult.

Hi Ms BH,
If you don't mind me asking, you said you have partials, whats the story with those, is it half/half over AND under? I tried to look that up but couldnt find it. could you elaborate?

check out this link-
http://www.advanced-art.com/Breast-Aug-Over-Under.htm

not my surgeon but same procedure. Ive never had rippling, sagging or any problems but i was really insanely careful during recovery- like no chest workouts for 6 wks post-op, wore sports bra to bed every night for 1st year & didnt let my now ex-boyfriend touch them for 3 months..LOL

Im 5'6 and a light weight (110 lbs).....I got mine done 3 yrs ago and went from an AA32/34 to a med-full C34/32 somtimes....they are perfect for my body (I have a 21/22 inch waist). You have to keep in mind that implants always look smaller then what ur cup size says as well. I got high profiles though BEHIND the muscle. I look more like a full B from the front but a C from the side....I love mine!!!

The complications are there but affect such a small amount of patients. You can have complications with any surgery but try not to stress about it.
I am in your area and I know the good doctors around here are a minimum $6500 to max $8500. I had my first set in "98" and the price then was $5000 I changed them in 2005 and the rate was $6900. Since I chose the same doc I did not have to pay full price and the surgery was less complicated because the pockets were already there from the previous implants. I went with the high profile saline implants because I wanted to go bigger and these type have a narrow base with a high protrusion. This let me go up to a 32DDD/34DD, yes some say this is too big but when you have had implants for 7 years you get so use to the size you think they are small on yourself. I am very happy with these ones and It has been a almost a year and they have settled well and I'm happy with the size. I am under the muscle and this is the only way I would go because of maintaining a low bodyfat I did not want to see the seam of the implant or the rippling effect of the bag.
Good luck with your decision and just keep up on the research, there is so much info on the net.

Mine just feel like my own boobs! lol The only time they feel heavy is when I've trained chest hard and my pecs are sore. I ly on my stomach all the time. I don't have ANY scar tissue, which is one reason I'm afraid to go in for another surgery. I don't want to end up with it. They're so soft now that I can squeeze thru the middle and my thumb and finger will touch in the middle (was that a good enough description, not sure I explained it right).

Good description SC... geeze, like real... I want some too! I have been tossing around the idea for years. Now that I will be done nursing, (he's going to wean if I have to wear earplugs and a blindfold, and he's my last) I'm giving him until March 1st, I have been putting much more thought into it.
Thanks for the reply.

Ms. Beverlyhills,
Thanks for the link, I think these sound really great!

I've had the opportunity to feel "real" (no I'm not lez and no I didnt' enjoy it - it was specifically research-oriented... :qt: ) vs mine -- yep, the real & the silicone are def more 'real' than saline. However I have never had a complaint about mine, I don't really worry about it too much and there are no hard spots, edges or anything nasty about mine. If I got the chance to go w/ silicone I'd still think long & hard about going in again. I assume at some point I will because the shelf life can be anywhere from 5 yrs to 25 yrs so you just never know. I'm not in a big rush to go thru that surgery again for any reason. But I guess if you do have the opportunity to go w/ the silicone I'd go for it.

LOL - I know quite a few girls who've had theirs done and probably have felt them all!!! It's just this thing that after you get them done it's like "feel how soft they are!" lol

I have saline, I do have rippling and have since the beginning. I've gone in and had them put more in, but I still have that issue. I don't feel or see any edges though. I had my last surgery in '94, so I really need to get back in for some maintenance. I'll do saline gels or silicone next time for sure.

Okay girls, I am going on Friday the 17 to have my surgery done. Breast Aug and Tummy Tuck with possibility of abdimomplasty. :( ( so wish I was in better shape when I had my kids. I need all the info I can get. What lotions did you use on your scrar? tape or gauze? I am totally clueless right now but I want to get the stuff bought tomorrow. I got a bottle of vitamin e i am assuming they use that on scar. Any info would be greatly appreciated along with any pain pills or some of qt's goodies would be great!! :) I go Thursday for my pre op so hopefully I can get more info. I just dont know what I should have in the house and do to the house. Our bed is super high with steps on it and i am thinkin i wont be in that bed and will probalby sleep in the lazy boy. who knows. I just need help getting organized and stop spazzing!!! QT make sure you save this thread!!!

First congrats on your decision to get the new twins!!!
One good ointment for the scars is "Mederma" you can get it at a CVS Or Walgreens like store. You apply it 3-4 x's a day for 8-12 weeks after surgery, after stiches are out or dissolved. Massage is the KEY to getting soft and flat scars. If you do not massage the scar it can stay lumpy and not become flexible. I have seen so many bad scars mainly because the girls did not take the time to massage. Vitamin E is not for surgical scars like this, it will not do enough. Clean everything in your house before surgery, set up the lazyboy with blankets and extra pillows, have frozen peas for bringing down the swelling[they are better then ice pack cuz they are softer].You can not sleep flat on your back for 1-2 weeks because you will cause the implants to shift towards your armpits and they could stretch out the pockets[what the surgeon created for the implant] before they heal. Plus when you do try to lay flat it feels like an elephant is on your chest and you cant get back up....
Just wear very compfy clothes w/ a zip up top, nothing to pull over your head!!! Lifting above your head will be the hardest thing to do at first cuz the range of motion is difficult. Stock up on some good supported sports bra, you will need these for a while. I found it much more comfy to sleep in them for the first 1-2 months cuz they held them nice and tight.
Make sure you stop all meds 2 weeks prior, even natural herbs and over the counter stuff. You doctor should explain all the risks you could encounter during surgey and post op if you are consuming the wrong things.
Good luck and keep us posted!
p.s. what size and style did you choose??

Your doc will tell you all the important stuff - I set out everythign I needed from high shelves, etc to the counter level so I never had to lift my arms higher than elbow or shoulder level the first few weeks. Just don't lift your arms up high for the first few weeks, period. Aside from the fact that it just hurts anyway. The first week sux moose balls, but after that its not so bad. I took the whole week off and just stayed in a recliner chair all week because I could barely get up the stairs to lay in my bed. Then if I got in the bed, I couldnt' get back out. That does take a toll on your lower back - if you can arrange to have a massage therapist w/ a chair (not a table) come to your house and work on your lower back, that is a Godsend.

The next stinker when you get range of motion is driving and looking behind you to back up or left / right for a turn. Full torso movement was a nono for awhile simply because I couldn't. Then there was the random nerve ticks where the nerves are re-establishing themselves. And finally getting back in the gym, first avoiding chest training, and then getting to chest training where you have to break up all the tightness. But just keep working at it, and it's all good!

Thanks BB and Sassy. Good ideas. Never thought of the frozen peas. Sassy, how long was it before your range of motion was okay? I do alot of interstate driving so its habit for me to check my blind spot. I am going to a 34 full c round saline implants. I don't really know what I am right now, between a a and b I think. Thanks again!

Those peas will be your best friend for a while!

The first 2 weeks were touchy w/ lifting my arms up at all. I'd say about a month. I had them done on Jan 14, 2000, started training for my 1st BB comp in early April -- my chest presses were a bit weak because the scar tissue & tightness were still there, but I had absolutely no problem doign full training from that point on. Just go as you are able and expect to take your turns slow :)

I had mine done back in 1994 or 1995. I can't exactly remember. I am a size C. When I had them done, I only weighed about 107, so much bigger would not have looked right. Mine are over the muscle, but I have not been thrilled because I dont have much fat to cover them. (All my fat goes to my ass...lol). I was naturally only a small A cup. When you don't have much fat to cover, you can really feel the saline bags and can sometimes see ripples. I have heard of a new implant called "gummy bears." They feel soft and natural like the silicone ones did, without the risks associated with silicone. I think I will get mine replaced with the gummy bears soon.k

In response to your question about price. Mine were $6000, in office, in Miami, Fl. I would advise against in office to someone else and would not do it that way again. Have them done in the hospital so that if something goes wrong, it can be fixed.

Canada has them and there is some great PS in Toronto. I get to see my gf's this weekend, well sorta she said she is not ready to show them in all the glory still settling.

Wow, lots os good info and insight into this. I have been ponerding the subject since last summer as well still not sure if I'd ever really get them done or not though. I used to be a full C but after 2 kiddos they're not so pretty anymore :( went down to a high b/small c. Gotta love Victoria Secret & push up bra's, HA HA HA.

Just checking in on you to see how you're feeling now that it has been a few weeks since your surgery.......I hope all is going well for you. :) :rose:

I have been doing pretty good. Thanks for checking on me. :) The implants have moved down to where they should be and its so nice to have something up there. haha Definetly worth it.

Glad you're doing great hun! Its a whole new world and you'll love them. Takes a little to get back into the zone w/ training and finding how your body works w/ them.

Very happy for you!

THanks!!
Hi, I do not compete however, I do take pride in my body. I am 5 foot 2 and weigh 110. I had breast surgery about 3 years ago. Before my surgery I was an A cup probably a 34 A I'd guess. Now, I am a 36 D. I totally, love my implants, however there are times, when I am not happy with them. For example, sometimes, I feel as if I should have more cleavage. I also wish now that I would have gone just a little bit bigger. For instance, I got 390 cc's overfilled and I wish I would have gotten 450 over filled. Only because I have the butt to back it up. Don't get me wrong, I love em!!!!

I haven't read all the responses yet but just to answer your question--I am 5'4" and about 105 pounds--I am a 34C and would NOT want to be any bigger. I am so glad I didn't get bigger--this size fits my body and looks proportional in clothes. I had to go under the muscle due to low bodyfat. Good luck !!
