Food for thought ???????

I am having a little trouble understanding why certain foods are chosen over others. For example why is brown rice prefered over white rice when the only difference on the label seems to be a few calories. Same goes with potatoes. Why do BB'ers choose sweet potatoes over regular ones ? The only difference between the 2 seems to be carbohydrates which I try to stay away from anyway, so I'd stick with the regular ones instead. If you guys can give me some opinions it would be appreciated.

Speaking in terms of carbohydrates as your are some are prefered because of thier low glycemic index and whole grain content. White rice has a very high GI as opposed to brown rice which is rather low. Not only that, but white rice has been milled and the bran has been removed. This is where to valueble vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients are contained. So by stripping the rice of its grain coating you not only raise the GI, but strip away good nutrients. This holds true for wheat products as well. White bread is very high GI and nutritionally void whereas a whole grain bread is lower GI and is rich in vitamins and minerals. Sweet potatos are very low GI whereas white potatos are EXTREMELY high GI. With potatos, however, the vitamins and minerals are still intact but the glycemic index is vastly different....BTW...Sweet potatos or yams really aren't potatos hence the difference. Generaly you want to stick to low GI, whole grain or non-processed foods. These foods keep blood sugar levels steady and provide the body with essential vitamins and minerals...without the myriad toxic chemicals that are added to processed foods. High GI carbs will cause a drastic and rapid rise in blood glucose which will elicit an equally dramatic insulin secretion response. Insulin inibits lipolosis in high quanities as is common from high GI carbs and also damages arteries causing all kinds of health problems...type 2 diabetes as a prime example. Bodybuilders choos low GI, whloe grain/non-processed carbs more for thier effects on the physique than health, but they both are bennifits of good food selection.
 
I was just reading this and I knew it had to do with high and low GI levels but I thought to myself, you know Beezers gonna come on here explain it perfectly whereas mine would be half assed and I'd look like an idiot. I swear bro it seems when a diet Q comes up there must be a bell that rings on your comp b/c you jump all over it. :p

No shit bro.....I'm generally pretty good about diets and such but damn Beezers hits the nail on the head everytime.

I've got a little monkey that sits here and follows posts and he thorws something at me to get my attention when a diet Q? comes up.

You can look at it this way, during a routing blood test for an insurance company, i found out that my tri glicerites were sky high, i went to the doc and the first thing he asked me was what was i eating, my diet was white rice, potatos pasta he told me that was my problem stay away from the white stuff, ie rice, potato , bread, so on i did for a month and my next blood test was normal, just a little food for thought
