floor press

Hi, I am currently doing a modified version of a wsb routine. I have never done any floor presses. I do most of my benching in a power cage, so I do not use a spotter and feel very safe by setting up the pins at the right height. My question is, can floor presses be performed safely without a spotter? The pins are too high to place it.
 
depends if you are a skinny guy or thick guy. if you can slide out from under the bar with 45's on it, while in your power rack then it's ok. you can also put the height pins you use to rack the bar on the front OUTSIDE of your rack and do the floor presses on the outside of your rack, if it's easier to slide out from under if you get stuck. if you can't fit under the bar then it isn't the safest for you to do

I do not have boards at the moment. Do you think that a pin press would be a good max effort lift to substitute for floor presses?
 
Ide do it like arthur saxon did, load it up, roll it over your belly, and then belly toss it into position.

its very hard to get the DB's into position if you want to do floor press with them.unless you have someone to help you
 
i do floorpresses in the power rack

lucky i get the safety pins so far down that the bar doesn't touch them by like 1cm when my elbows touch the ground

what you could probably do is get some of those really big plates with a large diameter,
the problem is that when you can't get it on some hooks you would have to press it from a static position up - without an eccentric phase,

by the way, i read some wsb article where it said that in the floorpress you can do approx. 90-95% of your bench press, which i don't really understand
is it because the legs are completely out of the lift?
i always thought that since you don't get the bar down to the chest you ought to do more weight....
 
You're losing all the stretch reflex when you let your elbows down to the ground. Similar to doing a rack press or box squats, you deload the weight and, effectively, have to move it from a standing start. This is a lot harder than keeping all the tension in your muscles and coming out of the hole or coming back up from your chest.

the inability to use leg drive is part of it.
 
Power rack. hmm... I'd have to guess one obvious answer would be to use some stretch bands attached to the rack. I'd think you'd be OK without a spotter then.
 
suspend the bar with chains connected to the top of the power rack, to let the bar hang at your chest level.
