Flaxseed oil question

This may be a silly question but oh well....

If I've never taken it before, can it make my stomach feel terrible? :sick:
 
I never had any problems with it -- but by itself, the taste is kinda yucky..... I try to add it to a shake (like chocolate) that hides the taste or a salad where the "fishy" taste won't matter (like with tuna).
 
I have no problems drinking a tablespoon by itself. I must be weird since I actually like the taste. The one advantage I've noticed after adding flax oil to my daily diet is my skin looks really radiant.
 
I put it in my shakes.

But since I've started taking it, my stomach gets very upset like about an hour after consuming it.
 
Look into hemp seed oil. Much better overall.

Hemp seed oil offers the direct metabolites of Omega-6 and 3, Gamma-Linolenic Acid and Stearidonic Acid. These metabolites are the same fats that are found in fish oils and are involved in the production of prostaglandin for hormones and in immune functions. Even if one did get unrefined sunflower oil and mixed it with unrefined flaxseed oil, you would mimic Hemp seed oil's Omega-6 to 3 ratio, but still be missing their direct higher metabolites.

I actually just started taking an oil blend. I love it. It makes me feel really great and energized. Udo's choice Oil Blend rocks! You should try that and it doesn't taste half bad.
 
24K how long have you had the oil? Did you just buy it? Flax oil goes bad pretty quickly once it's opened, about 6 weeks in the fridge, much quicker if left out....

If it's bad, you'll get a bitter taste or even a burning sensation on your tongue, and it will start to smell like paint thinner.

I am taking the gel capsuls flax seed oil 1200mg, that way u dont have to taste it, you just swalow it with some water

that is one of the many benefits of flax,
I still have to buy some for myself,
I will probably just add it to my protein shake

What is Flax Seed Oil and how can it benefit me? I was faced with this question when I started hearing about Flax Seed not long ago. It's become a 'buzz word' in society and seems to be making great strides in increased health for many. I wanted to join that wagon of wellness and so I researched until I felt satisfied that it could help me, too. Here are my findings:


Flax Seed Oil is a blue flowering plant that is grown on the Western Canadian Prairies for its oil rich seeds. This natural oil (also known as Linseed Oil) is highly recommended for the general well being and whole body nutrition and is considered to be nature's richest source of omega-3 fatty acids that are required for the health of almost all body systems.

Unfortunately, our current diets do not come close to meeting our daily EFA (essential fatty acids) requirements. The richest sources of EFAs such as flax seeds, cold-water fish, and soy and canola oils are rarely found in our regular meals. In addition, more typical foods like red meats and egg yolks can actually encourage the body's production of bad prostaglandins. Flax Seed oil can help restore the body's natural balance of good and bad prostaglandins.


How much do I take a day?

I just bought it last week, expire date on it is 2006. No it doesn't taste bitter, no burning sensation, and it smells fine.

It's just my tummy feels upset like an hour after having it. I've never tried the oil before.
 
Miss24K, my trainer confirmed today that she too cannot take flaxseed oil on its own. She puts it in her shakes. She says taking it on her own makes her want to hurl.

On another note, reading the article posted, if I already take 1tbsp of flaxseed oil, should I use fish oil caps or not on top of that? I don't want to take any more flaxseed oil since it's 120cal/tbsp.

Well that depends how much fat are you getting in your diet? 30%?

As soon as my trainer commented about flaxseed oil, I thought of you, Miss24K :) They all think it's funny that I have internet buddies that I talk to about this sort of stuff.

I have more like 35-40% fat in my diet now. Do you think throwing in a fish oil cap is too much on top of this? I currently eat 15 almonds, 1 tbsp ANPB and 1 tbsp of flaxseed oil as pure fat sources and then there's the smaller amounts of fats that come with my protein sources (turkey burger, chicken, tofu etc). I just thought the extra omega stuff may help in fat burning though.

Oh you don't need to add any more fat to your diet.

If you wanted to take the fish oil caps you could switch it with say the almonds or PB. But you definiately are getting enough healthy fats, so I wouldn't add it if I were you.
 
In my past comp diets I've used flax oil as my fat source. Can't stand the taste of it so it always went into my shakes or replaced olive oil as the "oil" in my vinegar & oil salad dressings. But then, FOR COMPETITION... i've put it directly on a piece of boiled chicken and eaten the whole thing out of a plastic baggie. :sick:

I prefer Udo's Choice as my flax. And def make sure its refrigerated once you open it. If it smell suspect, toss it.
