Flaxseed and Omega 3 capsules

BTW: I forgot to mention that Hemp OIL tastes Great. It has a light nutty flavor that goes with anything. No more choking down nasty flax.

Wow thanks for all the info. Where can I fond flax seed oil? Or Hemp oil? Thank you so much for the info, I feel like an idiot for buying all those pills!

Hemp, to my knowledge and I could be wrong, is not that high in n-3's, and who cares about n-9's? They are EXTREMELY abundant in many foods and are not essential, although they are beneficial.

Personally I like the taste of flax, but that is just a preferenace.

Stephanie- you can buy flax oil at many grocery stores, and can purchase it cheap online.

But when an oil is too high in 3's it becomes not beneficial. With omega oils it's about the ratios and proportions. Flax is good, but it does not mean there's nothing better. I switched from flax 1 year ago and have not looked back since.

Your entire diet has to have an n-3 to n-6 ratio of 3:1 or higher before n-3 causes any problems. Flax has an n-3 to n-6 ratio of aproximately 2.7:1. Most foods (meaning anything but flax and some fish) contain more n-6 than n-3, which will very quickly shift that ratio back in the other direction even if large amounts of flax are taken.

WHY “EFAS” FOUND IN HEMP & FISH ARE SO IMPORTANT FOR THE MODERN DIET
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are components of fat that humans need to be healthy, however, our bodies can’t produce them and therefore they must be obtained through the diet. EFAs come in 2 families, called omega-6 and omega-3. Medical professionals including the renowned Dr. Andrew Weil recommend hemp oil due to its ideal omega-6 to omega-3 EFA ratio. In the respected book Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill, nutrition expert Udo Erasmus states, “The best-balanced plant source of EFA’s is hemp seed oil.” While health officials with the World Health Organization, Canada, Japan and Sweden recommend a 4:1 ratio, hemp oil’s 3:1 ratio is the closest of any naturally occurring oil.

It is estimated that 90% of Americans do not consume enough omega-3, known as the “good fats" doctors recommend as part of a balanced diet. Hemp oil is one of the few seed oils containing significant quantities (20%) of alpha-linolenic acid, an important omega-3 EFA. Hemp oil is also the source of a rare super omega-3 EFA called stearidonic acid (SDA) that is the “first metabolite” in the omega-3 family and therefore easy for the body to process. Omega-6 EFAs are frequently added to foods through the use of common vegetable oils like corn, sunflower, and safflower, however, many people are unable to properly utilize omega-6 oils because enzymes needed to metabolize these oils are hampered by stress, environmental toxicity or aging. Hemp oil is a unique plant source of the rare and valuable super omega-6 EFA called gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) that is easy for the body to process and it bypasses the enzymatic blocks to allow proper omega-6 utilization. GLA is the key regulator of T-lymphocyte functions in the immune system and is involved in cell metabolism and growth.

There are other vegetable-based alternatives that also deliver EFAs. Flax oil is widely recognized as a valuable nutritional supplement, primarily because it contains more than 50% omega-3. But unlike hemp, it has somewhat overpowering taste and hemp oil is more stable and has double the shelf life of flax. Hemp’s emerald green oil has a “nutty” flavor and is great for use in salad dressings, pasta, veggies, sauces, dips and smoothies.

The book "Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill" (which you just referenced) was written by Dr Udo Erasmus, whom I have a HUGE amount of respect for. Dr Erasmus says that athletes who wish to maintain a very low bodyfat while gaining lbm as fast as possible should consume a diet that has an n-3 to n-6 ratio of 2:1.

A 4:1 n-6 to n-3 ratio is way too high in n-6 for athletes and bodybuilders.

It's not the ratio of hemp though, hemp is 3:1, plus don't forget the stearidonic acid found in it. It's really turbocharged Flax.

Wow, I am really impressed with all of your knowledge. For a beginner like me, it is amazing what I have been missing out on. My husband is in Iraq, and he has been working out with the other soldiers, and wants to start taking kreeatine (I know I chopped up the spelling on that) and some other things. Is that stuff bad for you, or is it ok? And thanks again for answering my questions. I went right to the supplement store and got pure Flax oil (I forgot about the Hemp Oil) and protein shakes. I cannot believe how many there was to choose from. I hoped I picked the right one! Anyways, thanks again for the info!

Well i'mnot happy with your choice of flax oil, but what the hell. As long as the flax you bought was kept in the refrigirator by the store you will be OK. Good Luck choking down Flax oil though. Creatine is a decent supplement, some like it some don't. Have him try it and see. Nothing beats AS.
