1) What is the benefit of Flax oil?

2) Does form matter? ie liquid (oil) or soft gels (pills)?

Saw some at Costco & was thinking of buying them (the softgels) which is why I'm asking.

Here's a few links talking about the benefits of flax.

In regards to the capsule vs oil issue, I don't think nutritionally, it makes a difference which one you take but most people choose to go with the oil because you'd have to take 14 one-gram capsules to get the equivalent of 1 tablespoon of oil. Lots of people take two tablespoons a day.. so that'd be 28 pills per day...

For sure the best bet is Barleans brand Flaxseed oil. Makes a BIG difference. The liquid is more economical than the caps plus it is likely to be freshest.

I use Barlean's Twin Lignan. Has borage in it so I don't have to consume borage.

One or Two tablespoons is enough per day. Supplies a solid amount of alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3).

However, in anyone over their mid-20's, you should be taking fish oil, about 1.5 grams total of EPA and DHA in addition.

So, I need 2 tbl of flax oil + omega 3's which should also include EPA & DHA in it? Can the omega 3's be in pill form? Do you mix the flax into stuff (heard it tasted nasty)? Any other supplements, besides calcium? BTW I'm 34.

I've been adding Flaxseed meal to my cereal/eggs and I don't even really notice it. I got it at Trader Joe's and keep it in the fridge. The package indicates that the flaxseed meal contains Lignens (spelling?) which help to prevent breast cancer. I'll take a look at it when I get hope and post up more info for you. I remember seeing a lot of benefits...but not exactly sure what they all were!

As far as the taste, it is somewhat nutty...and I love me some nuts! ;)

Oh yeah, I'll bet Nate will read this post!! LOL He'll get a thrill over that!

I have a Trader Joe's near me. I'll have to look for the flax meal -- I know they have the oil.

Yes at age 34, I'd be doing fish oil caps.

Use Nature's Way Fisol. Take 3 in the am and 3 in the pm. They are small and designed to open in the SI no fish burps.

I HAVE BEEN CHECKING OUT THE OILS IN MY LOCAL HEALTH FOOD STORES. I NOTICED THAT FLAX AND HEMP OILS ARE IN THE REFRIGERATOR BUT FISH OIL IS NOT. REASON? THE HEALTH FOOD STORES ARE EXPENSIVE AND I WOULD RATHER BUY AT VITAMIN SHOP. I HAVE BEEN HOLDING OF BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE.

Can you just add flax oil to any meal and get the same effect as taking it directly by the teaspoon? I hate the way it tastes alone and I feel like I am gong to gag every time I take it so I stopped.
