Flat vs Decline DB press

Do you use more weight on decline DB press than flat one ?

In theory you should
In practise I don't

BUMP

No. After I'm done with cables and then flat bench, I really cant put up much on decline, so I use close grip instead. I feel it works better for me.

I use db's for flat benching and bb's for decline, so it's hard to say.

When I used bb's for both my decline wasn't any higher, but that might have been because I did declines at the end of my routine.

I don't think there's necessarily a "should" here. I've had times in my life where each of those lifts has been stronger than the other two. Depends on what you're currently spending the most time on.

i think i did decline dbs once freshman year, i used the 40 pound dbs, and did a few sets of 8, from what i remember. if i did them now id say i can do more on flat db press, just because i rarely do decline db press, and flat db press for that matter.

In theory decline should be heavier than flat because
1] less ROM
2] it's a more natural movement, for both the chest and the shoulders

But in practise, I agree that it depends on how you train

Good point. I remember when I was first starting out I could decline significantly more than the other two. I just thought I was special. :p

i havent done declines in a looooong time, but I flat bench with a high arch, very similar to a decline. sorry to be of no help, just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. hehe.

getting DBs in place at a decline sucks

Very true :worried:
But it's so much more shoulders-friendly than the BB

Anyway if someone has tips about getting the DB in place other than a spotter, please share :)

Depends how much weight your talking.....I haven't done them in a couple of years, but I use to get the 95's up without a spot. I don't have any magical secret. I just while still standing put my legs on both sides of the pads, then simply rested the dbs in place against the top of my legs and SLOWLY layed back into position.
