First time doing dead lifts

Well, Friday afternoon was my first time doing dead lifts and power cleans. I was amazed at the pump I got after doing five sets of these. However, my lower back is fucking killing me. I think I may have pulled something or it could just be so sore from never doing these before or bad form. I'll post a video up next week. Anyone else out there experience something similar?

Blocking your body properly when you do deads is utterly CRITICAL. If you don't block properly you're going to end up pulling with your lower back.

There's a difference between the pain of "I've damaged something" versus " damn I overdid it the other day." Generally speaking, shooting, stabbing pain is something BAD whereas major soreness is DOMS or general muscle strain, but everyone's pain is different.

I imagine its just a severe case of soreness due to never having used those muscles like that. Welcome to the world of deadlifts. Like Musclemom said, a shooting/stabbing pain is bad, but anything else.....just soreness. Try ice/advil, or some alternating showers.

you should be very sore after doing deadlifts and powercleans for the first time, you're going to have to distinguish whether this is soreness or pain though. How did you feel leaving the gym? If you were hurting then, and have the same pain, you pulled something. If you were fine coming out, and just fatigued that night, and couldnt move your back in the morning then welcome to the world of deadlifts!

It's more like tight and tender when I twist. I soaked in a bath and feel a lot better when I get out. I'm thinking it's just sore as hell. Skipped my workout today and hope I can get back in tomorrow. I'm going to hit the sauna for 15 mins before my workout so I can loosen up pretty good.

When you train your chest...it gets sore...right?

When you train your back...all of those muscles will get sore too.
