My grandpa was in WW2 and the only thing anyone in my family knew was that he was wounded fighting the Japanese. He would not talk about the war to anyone, and the subject was off limits to my family. After he passed away I contacted my Congressman who was able to get his military records. We found out that he had been awarded 3 Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, and several other medals. I was able to get his medals from the defense department, and I have them on display in my home. He was a great man.

I think the only way is via the DOD records division. I'm not sure if they give the records out to all who ask.

I'd just ask him again... Tell him you'd like to see his award certifications. It's been my experience that most folks tend to keep these writeups somewhat close to the vest. Being humble is a good thing. :)

let me tell you something son - i'll be 55 in a month, served in 'nam (special forces) and the man is what we call a real soldier (not a toy soldier like a supply clerk, motor pool, etc) - he does not want to talk about 'nam because he is trying to forget - ANYONE WHO REALLY SERVED IN COMBAT WILL NOT TALK ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES unless he is a pyscopath or a liar - leave it alone dude - go watch the opening scene of 'saving private ryan' - if you watch that scene (i have never been able to get through it) and then don't understand the gentleman or this post then you need help...
