Fate?

PHATchik

Studio Gangsta
Do you believe in fate and accidents, or is everything meant to be? Is there a reason for everything? Maybe life is just one big potluck dinner, and you never know what's coming. Ideas?

I believe in fate, and not in free will. I guess it depends on a personality of a person.. whether he/she is able to step out of preconceived boundaries. I personally chose not to.

Not being able to look beyond boundaries makes the person narrow-minded.........it doesnt mean fate exists.

free will. i have the choice to do any number of things at any given time. i choose what to do and what i've done is a result of that

I wouldn't listen to anything this guy says.

So you don't think that certain things are meant to be, despite all obstacles? That sometimes there aren't logical explanations for things? Or maybe we don't choose the things that happen to us?

Chance is real.

Fate is man's search for something "more".

Did you just meet someone from out of town or soemthing?

I'm just a curious, inquisitive girl.

There's no such thing. :)

There's a story here................

And you're just presumptuous or however you spell the word.

Actually you got it right. :)

For a college student to be here at 5:50 on Friday evening is more than just curiosity.

Otherwise you'd be enjoying the social options...via a kegstand or at the very least happy hour....

takes me back....

Lol. Maybe I'm just boring?

I think everyone has there time - take death for example.

Man survives World Trade Center but dies 2 or so years later on a Ferry.

I think a lot of people lay too much faith and hope on "fate".

You can wait for what you think is your fate to happen or you can go out there and make it up as you go along and not wait to see what happens.

fate is an excuse.. like religion.. to help feeble minds give some type or meaning or purpose to their lives.. people naturally want there to be some explanation, but in reality, there isn't.

The Vikings treated Fate like a God. One of the cornerstones of the Viking warrior religion was the belief that every man's death had been pre-arranged, and the only thing one had a choice over was the way one faced his death; bravely, or cowardly. Therefore, one treated every moment as his last, because one never knew when Fate would come calling......

Those crazy Vikings. Those were probably the priests of Odin that did the shrooms stuff. AKA the "berserks."

Sorry, OT

Took a class with that stuff in there- the top dogs were the only ones to get to eat the shrooms, then they would piss in big ass cups and pass em around... the active ingredient exits unmetabolized in the urine, so all the other dudes would drink the piss and get high too before battle...

"drugs of abuse" - I was a neurobiology major

Did you ever read about anything called bufotenin (sp?)? I read that that was a psycho-stimulant taking by the Vikings before battle.

I'll be honest and say that I don't really know what I think on this idea. I think that everything has already been laid out for us. Maybe. However, we probably still think that we are making decisions and deciding our course. Who knows?

It is a scary thought to think that one's life might not have any purpose at all - it feels much better to think that there is some special purpose out there - plus it takes a load of responsibility off of your shoulders and moves it over to "fate".

Religion falls in there as well - it sucks to think that nobody better than me is watching out for me. Also, I hate making decisions.
So having an all powerful being thinking that I'm special and having something special in mind for me helps my esteem AND saves me all that bother of making decisions for myself.

The only fate I believe in lies in the cascading of events over time, smashing into one another and inevitably leading to some other collision further along in time.

That's what I like to think. There is an all powerful being that already has everything all laid out for me. I just wish He would let me in on it.

Yeah- i agree with this more or less.

There is no such thing as fate, unfortunately.

Free will is an illusion. our free will is completely shaped by our genetics and our environment.

Also free will is behind on our brain.

They did an experiment where they put very sensitive sensors on a persons brain and told them to press a button whenever they "felt like it".

Turned out there was a buildup of brain activity, starting 2 seconds before the person pressed. the time from when you "know" you want to press till you press, is more like .5 second.

So the decision has been taken, before you know it.

I don't know if consciousness affects what seems to be one's objective experience. By objective, I mean an outside world that isn't subjectively dreamed by one's self.

I don't know if consciousness or the outside world involve chaos/chance.

I haven't thought enough about chaos to say much about the boundaries (if any) thereof.

In practical terms, I think there are some things that are very likely, and some that are very unlikely. So yes, I think there might be some loose or perhaps solid version of 'fate'.
