redguru said:The problem is that fatalism is a Muslim canon. Anything that occurs can be attributed to Allah's Will. This, I suspect, is the reasoning that prevents the majority of the Muslim world to speak out against the atrocities that occur supposedly in His name.
Quadsweep's Sister said:If fatalism held true, wouldn't it be a depressing life? I wouldn't want anything predetermined, I think we try to do that enough in our own lives...gotta go to college, gotta get married have kids by 30, gotta have dream house by 35. pre-determined marriages, etc.
This was a pretty sad example of fatalism right here:
If it is fated that you will recover from this illness, then, regardless of whether you consult a doctor or you do not consult a doctor you will recover.
But also, if it is fated that you will not recover from this illness, then, regardless of whether you consult a doctor or you do not consult a doctor you will not recover.
But either it is fated that you will recover from this illness or you will not recover.
Therefore it is futile to consult a doctor.
In the end, all I know is MM (Marvin the Martian) was right...Resistence is Futile!

People confuse determinism with fatalism. They’re two completely different notions.Hiatussin said:That´s determinism you´re talking about.
Fatalism is more like martyrdom from what I understand- the kamikaze attitude that personal harm is acceptable when it´s needed to reach a goal.
I´m into fencing/swordfighting but with sharp blades and minimal protection. People who are willing to take a light hit if it means they get a shot at a good hit are called fatalists...
Anyway it´s probably a language difference since you all seem to know the idea as fatalism. its determinism here. I don´t believe in it.
Determinism is a lot more plausible then.anthrax said:People confuse determinism with fatalism. They’re two completely different notions.
Fatalism is the idea that something’s going to happen no matter what you do.
Determinism is the idea that what you do depends. What happens depends on what you do, what you do depends on what you know, what you know depends on what you’re caused to know, and so forth -- but still, what you do matters. There’s a big difference between that and fatalism. Fatalism is determinism with you left out.

Humans definately play a factor. a bigger question is whether free will exists- or that we do just exactly what our environment and genes causes us to.
anthrax said:Do you believe in fatalism?
[Fatalism = a philosophical doctrine holding that all events are predetermined in advance for all time and human beings are powerless to change them]
Mr. dB said:I don't think it really matters whether I believe in fatalism or not.
