A friend of mine suggests that fat is fat. I know from my studies that hemp and flax are great sources, along with fish oil, and that animal fats should be avoided.

Omega 3's are the ones we should supplement with but there are also Omega 6's and 9's of which animal fat contains none.
It is also high in saturated fat and cholesterol (which is bad in certain cases) so your friend is way off base.
