Fast Food Nation

OMG I know I am way late on this.. But I just started reading this book and I can't put it down... I lived about 3 blocks away from Carl Karcher for about 2 years... I lived in Anaheim and I knew about the Ku Klux Klan influence.. And I heard about GM buying up the trolleys so that people would have to drive... But OMG!!! this is way worse than I could have ever imagined.. I WILL NEVER EAT FAST FOOD AGAIN... Simply on principal... and what it stands for.. And what it has done to this great nation that everyone including myself has turned a blind eye to.. I can’t believe that I worked for mcdonalds when I was 14 now… I am ashamed to admit that!! I thought the US has been going to shit just in the past few years but it seems that this is years in the making.. God please help us!!

PEOPLE if you haven't read this book go buy it today and start reading it... It will change your life!!!!

Back of book

Fast food has hastened the malling of our landscape, widened the chasm between rich and poor, fueled an epidemic of obesity, and propelled American cultural imperialism abroad. That's a lengthy list of charges, but Eric Schlosser makes them stick with an artful mix of first-rate reportage wry wit, and careful reasoning.

Schlosser’s myth-shattering survey stretches from California’s subdivisions, where the business was born, to the industrial corridor along the New Jersey Turnpike, where many of fast food’s flavors are concocted. Along the way, he unearths a trove of fascinating, unsettling truths-from the unholy alliance between fast food and Hollywood to the seismic changes the industry has wrought in food production, popular culture, and even real estate….

This book starts off with the ties to the government the corruption etc… How the big businesses have taken over this nation and widen the gap between the rich and the poor. With are loving governments there background supporters. I am OUTRAGED!!!... Boiling for Columbine brought me to tear and this makes me PISSED THE FUCK off!!!

It is okay American’s just keep filling your fat, fucking obese mouths with this shit, believing everything you hear on the television, and ignoring everything by numbing your minds with reality tv and celebrities… Why has are world that has more education then ever before become more dumb… this makes no sense!!

#1 - I don't care about this country. I only care about myself and my family and friends. Selfish bastard? Sure.

#2 - I could give two shits what other countries think about Americans.

#3 - Moral Values are overrated.

Granted your family should be the most important but don't you see the pattern here... The laws that are past will in fact affect your family right? The pollution in the air affects the health of your family right? These obese poor people in the hospital you’re paying for with your tax dollars right? etc.... You don’t see the problem here?

Indirectly it will, but very minutely.

Pollution? Please. I suppose you think we're headed towards global warming too?

The only thing that really truely and directly affects me is myself. The decisions I make.

This is at least the second time I've seen you bitch about how dumb everyone else is.

"Why has are [sic] world that has more education [sic] then ever before become more dumb [sic]."

It's interesting to watch your thinking; you become so inflamed and easily swayed into anger by pieces of complete trash like "Boiling [sic] for Columbine," and then a paragraph or two down repeat an unoriginal (liberal) rant about how dumb everyone else is...

I think you should be embarrassed at your behavior. If you had just ranted about the book without (again) calling everyone "stupid" than I would not have even responded, but I would recommend tempering your ego considerably, because it is skewed.

I think that rather than trying to educate the lard-asses, the system needs to correct for them. Charge them higher health insurance premiums (just like smokers), force them to pay for two seats on airplanes, trains, busses, theatres, everywhere. Change the definition of disability to exclude those whose health problems are a direct result of obesity. If they want to be fat fucks, that's their business....but make them pay for it themselves.

Why was this even posted on this thread?

Anyway, I can't believe no one mentioned that retarded movie Supersize Me yet.

It's not the fast food places' faults....it's the way too easily influenced idiots in this country who don't have an independent enough train of thought to make wiser, healthier decisions.

No one's forcing them to eat fast food. Ooooooohhhh, but it tastes sooo gooood....

Good idea, you know you can claim disability if your too fat. Then they fat asses get to sit around the house all day stuffing their face while the government pays for it.

nothing wrong with the film super size me. it's funny and interesting. and disturbing.

it doesn't put the blame solely on franchises like mcdonald's.

it doesn't negate personal responsibility.

it doesn't come across like the woman who started this thread.

at all.

its a choice. fatasses choose to eat that shit, so be it.

they have been informed, and educated by now how bad it is. fuck em.

Haven't read it yet, but would like to. The girl next door to me has the book - maybe I'll borrow it from her.

lol, you want green or red? red i take it?

I want you to think of what you ate today. Got it? Now cut that in half, this is called a diet, people, everyone start one today! Darcy, you should stop eating. You see, when you skip a meal, your body feeds off its fat stores. And if you skip enough, maybe your body will eat your ass!

yep this is america you have a choice on everything..the last thing we need is big brother taxing us more on fast food or whatever..

you make your bed and you lay in it..end of story im fat because i eat too much..its not the pizza mans fault or ronald mcdonalds i just love those fries and mcflurry's

The problem that I have is that are government is giving these companies unneeded tax breaks. The companies are paying off politicians. “Efforts to prevent the sale of tainted ground beef have been thwarted by meat industry lobbyists and their allies in Congress. The federal government has the legal authority to recall a defective toaster but still lacks the power to recall tons of contaminated, potentially lethal meat.”

You don’t see a problem with that?

That they are directing there marketing aggressively at children.

It isn’t the just about the food it’s the morals and values these companies stand on.. It’s that in the US we spend more money on fast food then education.

That we sit are fat asses in are big suv’s, buying the gas they want us to buy. To go watch the crap reality television to numb are minds from the real problems we are causing.

It’s all related don’t you see it… This country is in a sad state of affairs but most people are more concerned with the new celebrity reality tv show…

If we spent more on education then we wouldn't have anyone to work in our fast food restaurants. ;)

This country is doing just fine. My quality of life is constantly improving. That's really all that matters to me.

Do you really think spending more money on education is gonna matter?

The biggest factors involved in a child growing up to be successful are genetics and how they were raised. Public education for the most part doesn't mean shit. My siblings and I were homeschooled up until high school, we really didn't get any formal education until then. We basically just did whatever we wanted, which usually included a lot of reading and video games. I run my own business, my sister is a writer, my bro is a computer programmer. I'd say we turned out just fine.

High school to me was a big fat waste of my time. I could have spent those 4 years making extra $. The whole system is flawed IMO. I chose not to go to college because that would have been another 4 years sucked out of my life. My point is that people need to take responsibility for themselves, and stop relying on the government to provide everything for them. Educate yourself.

Why is our country in a sad state of affairs? Nothing you've said makes much sense. Who is more concerned with reality tv? Idiots? You're making generalizations that only apply to a percentage of the population.

This thread reminds me of the south park hippie episode.

"You're playing into the corporate game! See, the corporations are trying to turn you into little Eichmanns so that they can make money."

I've been babbling about this book for a while now.

Glad it's back on the radar!

Focuses our sights not just on nutrition, but on the morality of the food industry as well.

Can you give us a little more detail about the book?

And I dont think many people on thios board use fast food as the staple of their diet.. if anything some may use it as a calorie supplement..

But I do think the average American especially in the midwest and the poor eat way too much of that shit.,.. most middle age midwesterners are so gross looking.

Golden seems to promote and defend anything that is anti-American

Anyway Courtney you just now said America is wonderful when it's helpful in your defense, and how you're just 'trying to help the country' but the rest of your posts on the USA have been peppered with great insight about how dumb people in America are, the way it's going to shit, 'moral fucking values my ass' .. that the rest of the world thinks we are arrogant assholes and why... etc...

Anyway you can't give puppy dog eyes on the internet so pretending to be "poor Courtney hurt by mean Mr. Cuts' words" is rather ineffective ... especially with all the nasty stuff you threw out at us Americans before it

About the book itself, it lost me at the phrase "cultural imperialism" and how fast food helps spread it abroad... I bet the writer fantasizes about Upton Sinclair

yeah my friend is in the reserves he just got back from a year and a half tour in iraq.

he was telling me last week about how theres a Taco bell and a Mcdonlands on just about every corner there.

Thank you com'again.

Fast Food Nation is a good read. It definately gives an eerie insight to the hollow conscious of corporate jugernauts like McD's and Karl Jr.

I enjoyed the historical basis of how the Fast Food industry came to be. It was news to me.

It is a sad epitaph that in a capital driven economy we blindly choose to poison our citizens.

How do you know the book is even accurate

As I mentioned before on threads past:

Because about 1/3 of the book's volume is his references. Further to date he has not been sued or recieved any letters from any lawyers. Considering the past experiences with McDonald's and their willingness to sue at the drop of a hat (even children), I'd suspect that the abscence of litigation would speak to indicate the truthful nature of the book and it's findings.

Don't you think McDonald's WOULD have sued if it were in any way false? Being true, they certainly would NOT want the info and subsequent investigation of the statements in the book to hit a national courtroom (which would be a media circus).

This guy covered his ass with his facts and figures. It shows not only in this work, but also Schlosser's past publications as well.

Smart, and informed man!

This country is one big hypocrytical mess. Most people aren't even aware of the problems, and for those who are, only a minute percentage actually try to do something about them.

I am going to have to read the book now to see what is the big deal.
Are people objecting to the way large corporations are running their businesses?
Lots of companies target children in their advertising. Last time I checked, kids didn't have much money so it is still the parents decision.
I just don't see how pointing the finger at large corporations for the way they run their businesses does any good.
WE made Mcd's and all the other fast food companies the huge successes they are today, but now we should point our collective fingers at them in blame?
Cultural Imperialism is an interesting term. Are all the fast food joints abroad going broke?
Seems it isn't just fat, stupid Americans that like tasty, cheap food.
I don't eat fast food except for the occasional Taco Bell for the simple fact that it makes me sick every single time I eat it.
Tastes good, Makes me sick. That is a no brainer.
I am going to read the book just to see what exactly is really going on in this country though.

Exactly my point... Very selfish attitude. I bring up a few points and instead of people just thinking about it. Some would rather call me stupid for the sheer entertainment of it instead of trying to really understanding what is going on.... If you are for or against what I am saying you should be able to take a book like this and make either of your judgments stronger… If you really do believe in your opinions, and not just talking out of your ass.

Oly moly

You're fucking wack

You have called so many people stupid over and over on just a couple threads

In fact, most of the criticism directed at you on this thread has been based on that; your calling of everyone in America stupid with the most absurd uppity tone:

"OMg evrione in this contrie is fucking dumb thankfuli im not like that this countrie is going to shit'

I don't think you understand the absurdity of what you've been saying on this thread; obviously because you keep at it and because you actually do say it in the first place

You wont' take my advice but it would be preferable if you would refrain from voting, or doing anything civically that affects the live of others... your reasoning is just too poor

Essentially it matters little if you behave in such a gross fashion on your own, but when people with similar thinking to yours start movements and such it becomes problematic

no, i take most opportunities to speak out against things i find unfair, dishonest or otherwise troubling

that my criticism mostly falls on the US is not an indication of any national bias; rather, most of the entities doing things that i condone happen to be there.

seems taht your defensiveness is shielding you from realities that you dont like

Are you just looking to create useless drama?

You may not like the manner in which she is saying things, but you can't argue with the topic itself. The book is an enlightening read that makes you think twice about buying that Big Mac. It's both interesting and frightening to learn about how the big business of fast food works. Good post IMHO.

Why are you on a personal witch hunt to put her down? Do you own stock in McDonalds?
