Facinated by broccoli...

Okay, thanks to ceebs, I'm feeling the need to eat a pound of broccoli every day...well, at least a couple servings. I really like asparagus, spinach, mushrooms, etcetera...all which (in my opinion) go together quite nicely in a breakfast type scramble--my omelettes usually end up as scrambles, so I've decided to streamline the process!

So the benifets of eating that much brocolli are probably great...I think I'm gonna pick some up...load up on the other veggies too. :chomp:

I'm looking for any suggestions for Trader Joe items as well...making a run later today...

I have to admit, I think about her "pound of broc a day" post quite often, myself.

I also have to admit that I FUBAR the omelette flip. :D

You obviously haven't read my posts on the diet forum lately. My record is now a pound and a half of broccoli, plus several pounds of hothouse tomatoes in one sitting. I was huuungry. :chomp:

I still say that it sounds like a lot more than it is, though. Broccoli cooks down to about 2/3 of its original size when steamed, and you can further condense it by smashing it into a mashed potatoes-like paste, and seasoning it with a little garlic salt. It's also only 69 cents a pound at Henry's locations throughout southern California, so it's economical, too!

Yeah...you've been haunting me in the grocery store. I put the broc in a bag, set it in the scale, and it was only like 1/4lb. I kept adding, and adding, and adding, until it reached 1 pound. Then I thought, "Holy ****, she EATS all that in one day?!?" Then this little devil popped up on one shoulder and said "Screw the broc there are TATERS in the next isle." Then this little cute, glowing, smiling avatar face popped up on the other shoulder, and without its mouth moving said, "Yeah, I'm bad, I can eat all that in one day. Can you run with the big dogs?" Well, I can't have that! So I bought a HYUGE bag of broc.

...and the taters.

Pound and a half? Pah! That's nothing! I've eaten that already today (raw) and it's only 5:30 pm - I have a another pound and a half waiting for me in my next two meals. :)

Funny thing is ... I'm still hungry

(But to come quite clean, that's only about half broccoli - the rest is cauliflower, gem squash, a few carrots, maybe some zucchini)

:D

lol!

I look at broccoli in a whole 'nother way now! It's been calling me!

Spatts, thanks for the great visual of you at the grocery store, getting challenged by ceebs avatar! :lmao:

Ahh grasshopper it is just brocolli, no meaning just brocolli.,being brocolli, be one with the brocolli, all is brocolli.

To broc, or not to broc - that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fiber sources, or to take arms against a sea of smiling Ceeby avatars.

No real reason for the broccoli, other than it keeps my skin nice and clear, and it's something I can eat a lot of with minimal impact on blood sugar or water retention. I didn't intend to start a cruciferrous revolution, but if other people can reap the same benefits I have with it, great. :D

fascinate...how i love that word.

it looks great with an "s" in it. and its based around the word... "nate"

i can understand your attraction to this word. :loveyou: :rose:

I thought (and please correct me if I'm worng...I'd love to be wrong on this one) that foods like broc that are high in iron and calcium weren't considered good sources of calcium because the iron and calcium battle it out, so to speak.

greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeat question, ill BUMP that!
i heard that anything over 9mg of iron will block calcium absorbtion. ????? who thinks this is really going to be a problem? and do the pros not outweigh the cons in eating 1 pond plus in brocculi? i have pyramided my dosage for 3 weeks to one pound, i wll maintain at eventually 2 pounds, and stack with 10 cans of tuna. How should i come off of this cycle? Coulsd i run it all year long? and what about gyno???

he he...had s'more brocc for lunch today...everything is "running smoothly!"

spatts, for once I hope you're wrong too!

yes, Ca and Fe compete for absorption

but it is the calcium that prevent from iron absorption :

Further evidence of the propensity of inorganic minerals to block the absorption of one another was given in a recent study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition5. In this research, the influence of calcium supplements on the absorption of dietary nonheme iron and of iron supplements was evaluated in 61 normal volunteers. In their study, they found that all three inorganic calcium supplements (carbonate, citrate, and phosphate) decreased the absorption of the iron supplement (ferrous sulfate), when taken with food. Calcium as citrate and calcium as phosphate were found to reduce the absorption of the supplemental iron by 49% and 62%, respectively, when taken alone with the iron supplement. All three nonchelated calcium supplements decreased the absorption of the volunteers' dietary nonheme iron, as well.

I bought 1 1/2 pounds of broccoli yesterday...I think my body is telling me that I need more veggies because I am constantly craving greens...

I just had to "take the ceebs challenge!" :D

Let's not forget the sulforaphane (detoxing properties) content of broccoli and indole-3 carbinol which routes estrone to 2-hydroxyestrone (an inactive metabolite) vs 16 alpha-hydroxyestrone.

I was told today that broccoli had protein in it. I never had a clue about that! Is that true? (you all are going to think I'm stupid....LOL).

 can you please translate for the rest of us?!

Rumor has it that even Madonna has jumped on the broccoli train, and is recording a remake of one of her biggest hits - "Broccolify My Love".

back to iron and calcium. personally i am glad the calcium blocks the iron and not the other way around. i definately need the calcium over the iron. also dosent the iron have adverse reactions with healthy fats. (speeds up oxidation?)

How unfortunate for you! What on EARTH do you do when dieting? Please don't say cabbage ...

thats funny how everyone thinks veggies when it comes down to "dieting". i guess to maintain satiety and it adds bulk, gives the feeling of being full....when you arent. i always ate relatively normal foods, just less. even starches, but people are afraid of those these days......

:D

You're not full? Maybe because you don't eat veggies! Okay, so you bought some broccoli this week, big deal! Just kidding baby, I'm proud of you for (starting to) eat your greens!

but really...

Maybe you're not as full as you would have been eating steak and potatoes, but I find a really good chicken salad to be quite filling! especially the kind I make. My new favorite is salad with honey tangerines, gala apples, sliced almonds with sweet oriental salad dressing...yummmm! I think I'll add a grilled chicken breast on top next time!
