Extreme weight loss

New member
I'll start by saying, I'm not sure if this is the right forum to be posting in, but it's the only one I came across so I thought I'd give it a try.

I'm morbidly obese and I have been trying to change that for a while now, but it's really difficult.

I am 5'3 and approx. 280 lbs and I would like to lose weight. I work out everyday, and I recently got a trainer who put me on a work out plan.

Basically started me off with 5-10 minute warm up, light weights, then 20-25 minutes cardio on the treadmill. Is this effective or should I be doing more cardio?

I'm also doing a 7 day detox, but it's my first day so I'm not sure how effective it is. I understand it's not designed for weight loss only, but I was advised to do a full body detox as it helps get rid of toxins.

Someone recommended Clenbuterol, would this help me? The person seems to be convinced that if I keep eating healthy, and work out, i'll continue to lose weight when I'm off it.

At this point, I'll try anything.

First of all, welcome. You DID come to the right place. The women here come in all shapes and sizes with individual goals, problems, needs, and levels of experience. I'm going to gift you a week of free plat so that you can use the search feature. please make use of it as we have archives going back ten years!

Second - NO CLENBUTERAL. It can be effective in some women, but for you, it is absolutely not a good idea.

I don't believe in the whole detox thing personally. You can loose some water weight, but you'll rebound and get the weight back IMO. Some other ladies here might disagree.

I'm going to leave tweaking your workout to those who know more about that kind of thing. Can you give us a sample of what you eat day to day?

By the way...my best friend at one point in her life was about 5'2" 260. She lost 60 pounds on diet alone - not starving herself, but eating the right kinds of food in the right proportions. So you can do this! let us be there to help you along and keep you motivated.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.

I have just started being really strict with what I eat. I haven't come up with a type of meal plan.

But I have been eating A LOT less and I have cut out carbs.

Yesterday I had a small apple for breakfast, for lunch I had two small cucumbers. Before I went to the gym I had a tiny piece of chicken, and salad. When I got back from the gym, I had parsley, tomato and half a can of tuna.

Today I had 3 strawberries for breakfast and a small cucumber. For lunch I had a chicken salad, and for dinner I'll probably have the same.

Why won't clenbuterol work for me?

Others will probably be here shortly and help out with the diet, I'm a bit new in the forum but I can tell you that you are NOT eating and that is NOT good, ur calorie intake is too low, you're getting no carbs and they are needed, what you can go is get carbs that don't come from flour (Chickpeas, sweet potatoes, carrots, etc) the slow absortion ones that don't make you hungry, ur actually not eating enough, you shopuld make at least 5 meals a day, having an apple is a snack not a meal..... I don't mean to sound scolding but it can be very harmful to eat such a litte amount of food....

That was my adv lets now wait for the pros that can give you a better example of diets that are healthy and hardy with things you can enjoy ^_^

Hi and welcome!

Your body is starving with those calories. That plan will eventually make you rebound and gain more weight.
You need to be in a good nutrition plan. First of all, cutting on calories to that degree will only make you gain more weight. Also, carbs and fat are not the enemy. You need to have lean protein, complex carbs and good fat.

I would not suggest any supplements to lose weight.

5 meals a day is preferable, but if your schedule is challenging, you can do 4.
Here is a sample:

Meal #1 1/3 cup oatmeal and 4 scrambled egg whites.

#2 if you're training in the morning, have a protein drink post training.

#3 breast of chicken or turkey or tuna fish or fish with a salad and brown rice or quinoa.

#4 Same as 3, but have vegetables and yams.

#5 Fish and vegetables.

Please, drink lots of water, don't have processed foods, nor sugar. Keep it simple! Water and green tea.
This will not be easy for you to maintain, but it will get easier. If you have a bad day, just go back to it. One step at a time..

What toxins exactly are you trying to eliminate? I mean, have you been consuming drano or paint thinner?

I am not giving you a hard time, I am just trying to help you to learn to debunk myths as they come up.

You aren't eating enough food to keep a rabbit alive - not good AT ALL. You are actually hindering your progress and SLOWING your already sluggish metabolism.

The trainer seems to be pretty on with a start program.

What people who are very heavy don't realize or understand is just how strong they really are. I mean, how many of us would be able to carry around a hundred extra pounds of weight? I know I would near collapse from exhaustion after just a few minutes. So revel in the fact that you are so strong!

May I ask if you have access to a pool? IMHO aquatics are an EXCEPTIONAL way to get moving, the resistance isn't damaging but still very challenging - you move at your own pace, very low risk for injury. And you want to talk a KILLER WORKOUT?!?!

I will let the other ladies who are more knowledgable about how to find the a good start for caloric intake. I've never been a hyuge proponent of such, my approach has always been a bit different. More about portions and macro break down but for others caloric breakdown seems to make them feel more in control/on target.

You should try to eat a portion of slow burning complex carbohydrate, portion of protein (the necessary fat is usually included in the protein source), and fibrous carbohydrate. As the day winds down and activity usually does so should your consumption of complex carbs consuming more protein and veggies.

With the plat search for sample diets or just read through some of the *contest prep* or other such journaling threads, there is a LOT of specific diet/training info.

I hope I am not throwing too much info at you at once. It can seem very overwhelming but I promise you, stay the course and keep asking questions. Eventually, everything will *click* for you.

ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS!!!

I think its great that not everyone counts every freaking calorie - how do you go about it? I usually count cals but its so time consuming unless you eat the same thing everyday.

The way I eat is VERY simple. I was taught to eat this way by the trainer I hired for my first show and have been eating this way ever since, bout 10 years.

You eat 4/5 smaller meals. First 3 meals all consist of:

1. serving slow burning complex carbohydrate (oatmeal, brown rice or yam)
2. serving of protein

All meals after a 4PM or so when activity slows (unless you have an active night job like bartending for example or train in the evening) consist of:

1. serving of protein
2. serving of fibrous carbohydrate

^^^ very VERY basic and when talking about competition was very stringent ie no fruit, no dairy. Since I am not interesting in attaining sub 18% bodfyat I also eat dairy and fruit and whatever else I please whenever I feel like it.

Even with the stringent dieting I would get ONE FULL CHEAT DAY which meant that I could eat whatever I wanted, but as eating foods that are very rich with sugar and fats make me sick (as they would most people who eat fairly clean most of the time) I don't eat too much of them.

If you eat a meal that includes a cup of brown rice, 5/6 oz of meat (a piece of meat that is about the size of the palm of your hand) and gobs of yuumy veggies chances are you will be too full to eat too much of a rich desert. :)

Does this make sense?

I have recommended Corinne T Netzer's book about food values here before. You can get a used copy on Amazon for a couple of dollars. It is VERY easy to use - simple to find nearly every food with caloric breakdown, vitamin/mineral content. The book also has easy to understand information about vitamins and minerals as well.

I've been eating this way for over ten years. It's simple and keeps me looking and feeling the way I have since I started. It isn't a *diet* as in what I don't eat. It is a *diet* as in what I DO eat. :)

wow so simple - its fantastic! I've always had so many rules, but I need to make things more simple. Tempting now, but I really want dairy and carbs for dinner - but in about 18 weeks that would be perfect. I woudlnt even have to THINK.

Oh hon, you are not eating enough!!! Your body needs more than that just to accomplish your daily functions of life! Food, the right food, is fuel for your body. Going as low as you have will only slow down your metabolism and sap you of energy.

I'm going to PM one of the other lady mods in here who has experience with clen. She can explain to you why it is NOT the right choice for you right now better than I can. but if i'm not mistaken, Clen affects your thyroid outputs, something you may already have trouble with. the last thing you want is to be taking a drug that is not only dangerous if missused, it may not work, and may in fact cause more problems. it sounds like your friend who said you could avoid a rebound effect realy doesn't understand what causes that rebound. it is also really only something you should even consider once you have already finely tuned your diet and workouts and just have that "last little bit" to go. It's really not effective when you have a lot of body fat to begin with. Also, the side effects can be really harsh for some girls, especially in the doses that tend to be most effective. It's just not worth it in your case. You'll be miserable and get nothing for it.

(QT, IW, feel free to come in here and correct me on any of this).

Clen is really only effective in people that are sub 17% bodyfat most fatburns really don't do much to be 100% honest they might have a 10% impact at most. The key to losing bodyfat is diet and exercise. It is best to hold off on fatburners as long as possible. When you have a lot of weight to lose changes to your diet alone will make the EXTREME impact your looking for. Ever watch the biggest loser those people are dropping 10 lbs or more a week and it has to do with diet and exercise.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the advice and help!

I'm only eating like this because of the detox.

My friend who recommended clenbuterol spoke with a friend of his who knows more about it and he said that I'd have to take a smaller dose in a liquid form, along with caffine pills and aspirin. He told me that his friend said I'd be on it for two weeks then off for a week. Another thing I was advised to do is to eat carbs or else my muscles will get weak and I'll sag. Is that true??

He said to do cardio, but to do a lot of weights as well, and to push myself when doing so. Is this right?????????

Thanks Bikinimom!!!

I don't have access to a pool, but I'm trying to incorporate exercise into my everyday activities. I walk to and from the gym even though it's not a long walk. I use the stairs instead of the elevator. I've also been trying to work out at home!!!

My trainer has given me a full work out plan for 3 weeks, then he's going to switch it up.

I'm just not sure what kind of foods to eat. When I diet, I eat way too little and hardly enough food. It's because I'm not sure what to eat.

As for the toxins, I was just told that from the place I bought the detox. The person said it's a good way to cleanse your body.

Noneifit, I'm telling you, clen would be useless to you. Don't do it. They are guys and cannot possibly give you advice on what you should and should not take considering they have completely different hormonal structure and react to it differently. Do not use clen, it will not help. I know it's enticing to think of some miracle weight loss drug, but there is none. Clen is ONLY effective when you are already very lean. Do not let them talk you into doing something that will not help you at all.

You do need carbs in the diet, but they must be the right kinds of carbs. Brown rice, yams, whole grains, red potatoes, oats, things like that. And later in the day, carbs that come from green veggies is best. Not because you'll "sag" but because the body needs carbs for energy.

Clen is dangerous to anyone out of shape, i would much rather see you divide your meals into 5-6 servings thruout the day & take a walk ,anything except resorting to compounds that will stress the heart & nervous system.

Eating well & staying active is the key, and this Detox thing??????? What the *******???????

Yeah! i have a drano shake every mornin also as Bikini mom said! :)

RADAR

I was going to start a thread warning of the danger of taking cutting supplements, including over the counter products, when what people need to do is start with the basics of good nutrition. I stopped myself for fear of scaring anyone, but people need to be educated that although we all yearn to be thin, is not worth risking ones health. Especially when it can be achieved by having patience with a healthy diet.

I can't emphasize this enough. Supplements are for when you need to get rid of the last layers of fat that stubbornly refuse to go. And even then, one needs to be careful and research the products. You need to have a healthy nutrition program that will help you lose weight and STAY HEALTHY. There's no such thing as a magic pill.

This week alone I had two new clients who end up with Atrial Fibrillation as a result of taking an over the counter product that was eventually taken off the market, but nonetheless created the health risk.

This is a resent recall from Hydroxycut
Hydroxycut Dietary Supplements Recalled, Linked to Fatal Liver Damage
Hydroxycut, the popular brand of dietary supplements taken by millions of people to lose weight and build muscle, has been ordered recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The products have been found to cause severe liver damage and in at least one case, liver failure causing the death of a person taking Hydroxycut. In all, at least 23 people have reported suffering severe liver damage and other injuries while taking the dietary supplements.

People who took Hydroxycut have suffered seizures, cardiovascular disorders, and rhabdomyolysis, a severe form of muscle damage that can lead to kidney failure. These injuries have occurred in consumers who took Hydroxycut in the recommended doses, according to the FDA.

If you have taken Hydroxycut dietary supplements, you may be at increased risk of suffering life-threatening liver damage. You may have legal rights to financial compensation for your medical bills, pain and suffering, and other damages. If a loved one has died as a result of taking Hydroxycut, you and your family may be entitled to financial compensation for the wrongful death. No that is not at all correct you do not take clean with an ECA you are way over stimulating yourself and will burn out your receptors. Clen is not some magic drug it wont strip the fat off you. The other large concern of someone that is morbidly obese taking any kind of fatburner is they typically have high blood pressure to begin with add in a stimulant and that is a recipe for heart attack or stroke.

Ohhh, I see. What would you suggest I do?? I'm trying hard to work out but sometimes it's too hard to do more than 20-30 minutes because I do it twice a day. I was also told that two half hour work outs are better than one long one and that working out in the morning on an empty stomach is the best time to do so. Is this true?

Welcome to the site non noneifit! I'm sor glad you are here with us. I can hear your desperation and I understand how difficult it is. I first would suggest backing up a bit and taking a breath. I feel like you are trying to do way too much at one time. I see so many people say "I'm going to start this and that today" and it is this whole complicated program. It lasts about a week. These ladies have given you such good advice. I think it would be wise for you to sit down and write out what your goals are and why you want to obtain them. NOt the superficial reasons (I want to look thin) - but what is the real reason? You want to feel better naked? You want to have more energy? You want to feel comfortable in your skin? Try to be as specific as possible. Then, take the basics of a good diet as Thandie has so well laid out and start incorporating one thing at a time. Keep your workouts as is. In about a month - if you are persistant - you should be able to look at your diet and be proud of what you have accomplished and changed for the better. (by healthy I mean eating enough whole quality foods, but not too much). Once you have the nutrition down, then we can focus on your workouts. RIght now, you do what you feel is best for you and something you enjoy.

Regarding Clen, I suggest that you stay away from any type of thermogenic. You will absolutely lose some water weight the first two weeks or so but that is it. You would have to follow an EXTREME calorie deficit and feel absolutely miserable in order for products like that to take effect at your weight - not to mention the harmful side effects that so many can have. If you are wanting to feel better then it would be counter productive to take such products (trust me :-)

Now, I do hear your desperation and I can tell you are going to do something no matter what we say. That is OK. I'm stubborn too! Again, I would suggest nothing at this point but what I mentioned above with taking progressive steps in your diet. However, if you want to give something a try I recommend purchasing a product called LipoFlame sold by agxsports.com - you take the product about 30 minutes prior to working out and it will give you the extra boost to spice up your workouts. Meaning you'll be burining more fat. You are doing the work (it isn't magic) but the supplement is assisting and making the most out of your time. If this is something you decide to do I'd be glad to help you with dosage (no, I don't work for them ;-) but I know the owner very well and have used all of his products successfully and safely. His site is geared towards men so don't be turned off. The dosage on the package is geared towards men as well so please work with me on the dosage.

I'm so glad you are hear. I hope you chose the healthy route - I think you feel amazing on your journey and can be so proud that YOU are doing it. I'm with you on this one.

Be good....

^^^ What they all said. :)

Let me guess where you got the "detox information" from? The clerk at the health food store where you bought it?

We are still waiting what it is exactly that you NEED to "detoxify" your body from? I mean, have you been eating your meals from a can with wet lead paint? The whole "detox" thing is hogwash... utter bunk. Unless you are seriously ill (ie lead poisoning or some such) the way to "detox" your body is to: not smoke, and not drink alcoholic beverages, eliminate all the chemically processed, sugar-filled, additive-filled "foods" from your diet and you will feel better within a few days. I promise you. Once you straighten your diet out, eat enough of GOOD FOOD to fuel and feed your body you will have abundantly more energy because the spikes and subsequent crashes in your bloodsuger will be virtually eliminated.

There are many examples of basic diet guidelines/examples of meal plans on this forum. Take a cruise around and let us know what you come up with. :)

PS - this is BIKINIMOM masquerading as my husband. *giggle* (He's trying to fix my laptop email.)

Thank you for all of your advice. I've decided I'm not going to take clebuterol. I'm really happy that I joined this site because I was obviously misinformed. I don't want to harm my body and even though I have to work hard at it, I'm trying to stay motivated.

Another problem is that I keep weighing myself. On Monday when I weighed myself I was 185, then I went down to 180, now I'm at 176.4. My trainer said it's water weight but it still feels like I'm doing something right.

I want to get stronger, I feel so weak when I do weights and it sucks, but I was told that I have to do light weights. I just want to be more energetic so that I can walk up the stairs without feeling like I'm going to pass out.

Also, my trainer said that I can try taking JUST a caffine pill before my work outs to give me more energy, and CLA with every meal. Is that okay?

Hi bikinimom,

I honestly have no idea what I'mtrying to detoxify. I'm new to this so any advice that someone gives me, I try. Simply because I have no knowledge, but I want to learn. Rather than starting a diet that I can't maintain, I want to live a healthier lifestyle. I do enjoy working out, so I'm trying to find different ways of doing so. I'm just still a bit blah about a meal plan, but I'm going to take your advice and look on here.

Thanks for the help!

This might sound odd, but there is one good thing about being 280 lbs, that is, you can make almost any minor adjustment to your diet and start loosing weight. On the other extreme, if you throw the kitchen sink at this problem, you will fuck things up fast!

Listen to these girls, make the diet and training adjustments they recommend. Save clen/eca/etc for when you are 150 lbs and trying to reach 130. That's when you need it. That may seem like eons away. Just stay in the present moment and focus on the current meal ahead of you. Implement the advice these girls are giving and maintain this mindset. Think too far ahead and you will overwhelm yourself, try too many changes at once and you will overwhelm yourself. Focus only on the now and you will maintain the steady pace needed to reach your goals.

Best of luck. We are all behind you!

EXCELLENT!

I never spoon feed information to anyone because I feel that this is doing them a disservice. I will point a body in the right direction and help them to find THEIR OWN answers. IMHO this will help TEACH THAT BODY TO FIGURE THINGS OUT AT THEIR OWN PACE. <---- I have found that this approach is most helpfull to every individual as they can go at their own pace. You are competing against you so YOU CANT LOSE. :)

You've already learned that the whole *detox* thing is utter bunk and MOST PEOPLE that work in such stores (and even in gyms, online) are more interested in selling you a product than about giving you accurate information. These people aren't necessarily unscrupulous. They may not know the answer to the questions you are asking but still feel obligated to answer because they *work there*. As you put more time and effort into understanding how the human body (specifically YOUR body) works you will eventually know enough to know when something *just doesn't sound right*. The internet in general and elite specifically has a whole pool of very knowledgable people who are more than willing (when they have the time) to steer you in the right direction.

There is no ONE person who *knows it all*. Additionally even though the basics of human physiology and biology are constant every BODY's BODY reacts just a wee bit differently to every stimuli be that exercise, diet or supplement. My goal is to try and help people to learn and help THEMSELVES.

^^^ Which is not very good salesmenship for a personal trainer. For them the goal is to make their clients FOREVER dependent on their services. I've always felt that this approach cheated the client to a certain extent. Unless a client told me pointblank, "I don't CARE to learn this stuff. That is why I am paying you." Then I was like, "OK we have a clear understanding. Where there is a clear understanding there can be no MISunderstanding."

I stopped personal training eons ago but on occasion I still help out a bit here and there on the boards.

I want for you to learn as much as you humanly possibly can so that you can make a LIFE CHANGE, not just fit into a smaller size of jeans. This means there will be a lot of trial and error and many times where you will feel like giving up. The most important thing is that you remain consistent in your efforts as this WILL give you success over the long haul. You didn't become overweight in a week or two months. I know that this will be little consolation when you feel like you've been busting your butt and you don't FEEL like you've made progress. There are many MANY ways to guage progress. The scale IMHO is THE LEAST ACCURATE AND/OR PRODUCTIVE MEASURE OF PROGRESS!!!

Use the tape measure, how your clothing fits and most importantly HOW YOU FEEL to guage progress.

Promise me this.

Thanks for all of your advice, feels like I'm already learning a lot! This site is the best! lol

WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)
I am already soooo excited for you.
You are about to make some amazing changes for your health and quality of life.
We have many, MANY people here ALL happy to offer you the help and advice you need. Plus, the ladies here are REAL people- all with their own unique stories. If you take some time and browse around, there are so many success stories to be found. Plus, we ALL need support at one time or another. Just come here. There is no such thing a stupid question. We all must start somewhere and being new to something like this can have some frustrating, challenging moments. We have all been there.
Some days are not going to be perfect. If you skip a workout or eat something naughty, don't beat yourself up over it. If you fall, just dust yourself off and get back up. This all takes practice, trial and error.
PUT THE SCALE AWAY. It will not give you a very realistic picture about what is going on with your body. At first, your weight might be all over the place from day to day. Your body is going through some new adjustments and the scale will just set you up to feel discouraged. If you feel like you NEED to use the scale: Pick a certain time and day once every week or two and ONLY weight yourself at that time. Then, try to go a month.
You will be so busy with your new eating and workouts, the time will just fly by and the weight will go faster than you imagine.
Stay away from any special dieting stores where people will try to sell you a bunch of junk that you REALLY don't need. Being healthy does not need to be expensive. You need food (YES! Your calories listed are not even close to what you need! Your body can't burn fat without fuel). You need water. You need excercise, sleep and support. Anything else is just junk being sold by people trying to make a profit.
The ladies here are not trying to sell ANYTHING, so you can find comfort in knowing their advice is only given to help you get to where you wanna be.
Feel free to ask any of us any question that pops into your head. If someone doesn't know the answer, we will direct you to a person that will either know the answer or know how to find the answer.
Another thing, if you are just having a bad day, feel free to vent.
You might want to look at some of the logs posted by other ladies. If you get into the habit of posting what you are eating, it will help you stay on track.
Good luck!

Hi Iggy :)

So far my diet has been pretty much the same since last week.

I have been having 2 egg whites and vegetables for breakfast, but today I used egg beaters instead. lol

At lunch I have a salad and chicken or tuna.

At dinner it's usually grilled vegetables and chicken or fish. I'm going to have turkey instead though tonight.

For snacks, I have cucumber, celery, strawberries, or an apple.

I drink 5-6 litres of water a day and I have 1-2 green teas.

I'm staying away from sodas, even diet, and all types of juices. Not even using sweetener.

I'm not sure what else I can do lol

#2 Here, have a post workout protein drink if you train in the morning

At lunch I have a salad and chicken or tuna. ( #3 add sweet potato or 1/2 cup brown rice)

Hi and welcome to EF!

I'll give you some suggestions. You need about 5 small meals a day. By waiting so many hours to eat, your metabolism starts slowing down, then on your next meal, you'll end up eating too much.

Hi Thandie,

What kind of things can I eat? I have very small portions throughout the day, unless it's celery.

oops sorry, didn't see everything in blue. lol

Will I lose weight fast if I add in the brown rice and such? I don't want it to slow me down.

Also, is there some kind of substitute for salt? Everything is so bland, all I really use is black pepper and sometimes garlic powder.

I have used something called nosalt, but it's all potassium and because I have pcos, I can't have that much potassium. Any suggestions?

Yes, I should have used a brighter color, LOL!

No, the brown rice and other complex carbs will help you increase your metabolic rate. If you don;t have them your metabolism will slow down therefore you will hold body fat.

There is a substitute for salt in the store, but our bodies need some salt, in your case is in moderation. You can have "Molton light salt". It's 1/2 the sodium of regular salt; just don't use too much!

Approximately 50 – 60% of women with PCOS are obese. It has been shown that losing even 5% of body weight can lead to an improvement in skin, regularity of menstrual cycles and decreased insulin levels. However many women with PCOS experience difficulty losing weight, possibly due to high insulin levels promoting fat storage. The standard low fat high carbohydrate weight loss diet may not be the best approach for women with PCOS. High intakes of carbohydrates, especially refined carbohydrates (ie. sweets, white bread, white rice, etc.) will quickly turn to sugar and cause elevated levels of insulin. Since high levels of insulin can cause a multitude of problems for women with PCOS, a better diet would be a low glycemic index diet. This is a diet that includes foods or combinations of foods that do not cause a rapid rise in blood sugar..

In other words, simple carbs or refined carbs are not for anyone, but especially not for you. Make sure you ALWAYS HAVE WHOLE FOODS and green vegetables in the late afternoon and evening. You need to have grains, so oatmeal in the morning and basmati rice or sweet potato is allowed. Thank you for letting me know of your condition.

Thanks for the list!

It wasn't the colour, it's just that I'm new to the site and wasn't aware that you could quote that way, I just saw the response at the bottom lol

So even with pcos, I should still be having some carbs? The list says to avoid brown rice. I'm a bit confused.

I'm sorry, I apologize!
I didn't edit my text after reading of your PCOS. No brown rice, but you can have instant rice and Basmati rice, which I think I wrote.

Oh I see, makes sense. Oats and sweet potatoes are okay too? Sorry I'm probably asking the same questions over and over again, but I'm trying to understand. So far, I've stayed away from that type of stuff, but everyone tells me that I need it! So I think I'll try to incorporate some into my diet.

I'm trying to work out twice a day. Cardio in the morning, and just started taking a class and light weights in the evening. If no classes are available, I just do more cardio. Should I have carbs before I work out or after, or does it really matter? What's the best time to have carbs?

Sorry if I'm asking too much and thanks for your help!

basmati rice is good? Oh this makes me happy. There's this thing i got from trader joe's as a side when i didn't have time to cook and I wasn't sure it was healthy. It doesn't have any unnatural ingredients (rice, vegies, chickpeas and spices), but i wasn't sure about the rice. yay!

Yes, they are too, just don't go over board with it.
Please, don't workout twice a day. You'll be burned out in no time.

Carbs before lifting; protein after lifting and cardio. Oatmeal, sweet potato in the early part of the day and vegetables in the evenings.

Yes it is, Neff!
The ingredients are good, but just make sure the amount of carbs/fat on that dish.

Quick question, Those low GI Carbs are the ones we should try to eat and the High GI avoid? (if so bye bye rice cakes and watermelon :()

This question was prolly for Thandie but I just happened to read it and it reminded me of one of my biggest food mistakes when I was just starting out.
I thought all protein and diet bars were good. BIG no-no.Those diet bars that taste really good, yea, usually bc they are PACKED with sugar. Be sure to check the labels. Maybe you already knew this, but I didn't know about this until I joined this site.
Hopefully, Thandie will jump in a give you a good explaination about the rice cakes and a good substitute.:supercool

Nan, you're right! Rice cakes and watermelon are high GI. I rarely touch rice cakes. If I want to have carbs, might as well make it useful, something good. Once in a while I have some PB with it. Not worth it! It goes right in your system. I use them mainly the day of comp. If my muscles are getting flat, I have a rice cake with PB and pump up some weight, but it has to be right before going out on stage. It works that quickly!

Myway, yes, bars usually have lots of sugar, but even worst they have fillers, which is processed products. Definitely not ideal! If you're hungry and need something quick, have some almonds.

Need2's bars have whole grain, which is good, but check the different recipes he has and make them low fat/low sugar. Also count your macros when you have them.

Does your body metabolize rice cakes made of BROWN rice the same as those that aren't?

Rice cake: same all, same all!!!
Another thing a rice cake is good for is if you like to do morning fasted cardio, then is appropriate. However you need to eat immediately thereafter.

i would say no rice. it's too high GI.

oats and sweet potatoes DEFF.

than pretty much has it down.

lots of green fibrous veggies.

make sure you eat something every 2-3hrs.

if its even a protein shake.

Yes, I agree about bars..... but no worries. I don't really eat any type of bar, anymore. When I was first learning how to eat right, by these EF ladies:rose:, I was eating them because I was so unsure about what was good vs. bad to eat. Well, that was YEARS ago.
I have a somewhat decent eating routine, now.
Although, I am getting more curious about the whole foods. I usually try to stick to fresh, nonprocessed stuff. I mostly eat fresh fruits and veggies, fish, chicken and lean beef. Every now and then I DO eat processed stuff.
I am always looking for a way to improve my mind, health and so on.
Since you have joined us, I have been really wondering more about this way of eating. Plus, I have been craving a new challenge.
If you would be so kind, could you advise me on where to start my research? Maybe some books, articles or whatever that YOU believe to be accurate concerning this way of eating?
I could always just google for info ..... but It's hard to know which ones have it right. It's obvious that you know what you're talking about ...... but it would be a TON for you to type out as a post response, lol.

i told her to pick up "The Abs Diet"
it's a good read and will give her some basics to nutrition/

I'm more then happy to help you with the changes you're ready to take on.

In addition to studying nutrition I also study all the diet theories, including vegan, raw foods, microbiotic, etc. So, what I did, I found what was the best approach for good health, looking great and longevity, and whole foods incorporated with some raw foods, counting macros and getting the best supplements to help along the way. So, if I were to recommend books, I would not know where to start.
I work like a sculptor. I take one thing, add another, just trying to mold what the particular individual needs. Every thing I do is costumed to each person. I also work from head to toe and from the inside out.
What I give here is basic advise, but is alot more complicated then that.

Ok, so ask away! what are your goals?

Well fuck me runnin. And here I thought it was all due to the vodka.

Dammit, back in the day we were told that rice cakes were "OK" as long as they were made from brown rice.

What is the reason that brown rice is ok but brown rice cakes are not? Does the process by which they are made have something to do with how the body metabolizes it.

See, even an old experienced broad like me is still learning a whole lotta NEW *tricks*. No reason to get discouraged WHATSOEVER... just means I have learned something new. :)

lol. Yea, we are all still learning. It's just great that we have this place to help each other.
BTW- you were one of the first people to tell me how to eat.
Before I found EF, I have the o-so common misconception that the best food was low fat, low calorie. I was starving myself.
After reading what you posted, along with several other women from here, now, I get to eat and be healthy. Yay and thanx.

I'm not really trying to lose weight or gain a ton of muscle.
Since being on EF and learning about proper calories and actually eating instead of starving, I have been relatively satisfied with the way I look.
Now, I want to FEEL better. Physically, I feel pretty good, just want to eat REALLY clean. I have always had a rare sleeping disorder and have developed some bad habits to help cope with it. I LIVE on caffeine and some other bad things. Not nearly enough water. I want to degunk myself from all of the unhealthy stuff. I just want to know that I am taking care of my body in the best way possible. I want only good, clean stuff in my body. I don't know really how to explain it. :worried:
I want to do something that takes a TON of self control... besides school and the stuff I'm already doing. I want my body to be a fine tuned machine running on the best fuel possible.
That prolly didn't answer your question.... but I tried, lol.

Yes you have answer my question. Everyone has a different goal. It doesn't have to be about losing or gaining weight. I was looking for what you are looking for now, 19 years ago. I never had to lose weight, however I had spend a lifetime trying to gain weight and fortunately it didn't work.

I'm really glad you're thinking in those terms, because you can teach your child from an early age to eat healthy and it will be easy for him as an adult. It's the best gift you can give him. There are so many young children with issues of diabetes and heart problems as a result of their diets.

You can start by having frequent meals if you're not doing that already.
If you can afford it, have organic as much as you can. If you have to start somewhere, start with organic mets (chicken and if you have beef), Then have vegetables. Make sure you wash everything really well. Have everything whole. At first it's a bit challenging if you have some processed foods in your system. The average person doesn't know what goes into processed foods, I do. Believe me, what's in there is what makes people sick.

As I've been telling everyone, have your grains and starches early in the morning and the fibrous carbs late afternoon and evenings.
Drink water and green tea. If you want to take it one step forward don't have coffee, unless is organic and not everyday.
If you're not one of those who loves green vegetables, then juice or blend them to get the fiber, which is important. I'm not crazy about vegetables. I love grains and some vegetables.
Don't have dairy or soy milk. Have Almond milk. Very easy to make.

You already know about refined sugar. That's why I love dates. It's not simple sugars. They are actually very good for you.
Have Fish oil (if you need a brand, let me know)The best fish oil you can get. The ones that aren't very good, it's taken from a place you don't want to know.

Did I miss anything? Let me know if I did, it's been a long day, LOL!

lol myway, i think she was asking about noneifit's goals.

lol, iggy. Actually, ur wrong. She quoted me and also asked me a few questions regarding my questions.... but thanx for playin.
:mix: U know I heart you, right?

Yes it is, Neff!
The ingredients are good, but just make sure the amount of carbs/fat on that dish.

6g fat per serving and 32g carbs per serving...since I really don't eat complex carbs but once a day (either at lunch or oatmeal in the morning), I figure that's an ok number....yes? No?

I don't usually eat a whole serving anyway. One package of two servings usually ends up being three for me.

Yay!
I TOTALLY agree with you about the importance of teaching good eating at a young age. I basically feed my son whatever I'm eating. This should work out GREAT.
Ok, I usually eat about 3-6 times a day. I aim for 5 or so... but sometimes I get really busy and forget to eat. Those days, I might only eat 2-3 times. I know I should eat several small meals. I will work on being consistant.
I will have a bigger problem with cutting dairy than cutting sugar. Not a big sugar junkie .... but I LOVE cheese. Hmmm. I'll work on it. I LOVE green veggies. Actually, I love most veggies. That part should be easy for me.
How do you make almond milk? I love almonds. It sounds yummy.
I can work some organic food into my normal rotation. A store close to my house has a nice variety with great prices. My vegan cousin has been telling me to do this for YEARS.
I take fish oil but it might be one of the bad ones. What's a GOOD one to take?
BTW- today is my first day without coffee. So far, I'm fine but I predict a rough day for the hubby because I might be cranky by noon. If so, more of a sign that I need to stop drinking it.
BTW- thanx for all of your help. Ur a gem.:supercool

Neff, the numbers are good!. Is there any protein in that dish? May I ask, why don't you eat complex carbs? Even if you have oatmeal and another carb a day, it still not enough. Do you count your calories? This is not necessarily to be obsessive, but that way we know if we're eating enough or too much. I have to count because if I don't, I won't have enough food. Somehow I fall into my childhood pattern where I didn't have enough food.

Myway, you don't have to change things overnight, in fact I recommend to do it gradually or your body will reject it. I was a coffee addict, lol! the way I did it was to cut down gradually and in 1 or 2 weeks you're having green tea. The last couple of days of your cutting down should be with decafeinated coffee, if you don't do this you'll get a number of unbearable symptoms.

When you buy organic, try to get LOCAL organic and if they don't have it, that's fine. You go with the process of elimination.

Cut cheese down gradually as well. It doesn't have to be overnight; just know you have a goal of being healthy for the rest of your life. This way you'll have a lesser change of getting sick because your body will be a fine tuned machine.

I'll come back to give you name of fish oil and almond milk recipe. Now I have to work..LOL!

It has 6g protien I think...

I know I need to eat more of them but they are a little too "filling" for me. Because of my history and the fact that regressed a little over the winter, I'm just not comfortable being that full yet.

I do count calories, for the same reason you do...to make sure I'm eating enough.

I have NO PROBLEM doing this gradually... especially with cheese. That gonna be hard. I have done fine with the coffee (lol, its only been a few hours:rolleyes:) I had a hot cup of water with a couple of lemon slices. It's actually really good. Since it was hot, I kinda felt like I was having coffee. For breakfast, I had oats mixed with almonds. I'm REALLY going to try for more water. That's a BIG issue for me.
I'm on my way out the door to hit the grocery store. I need to pick up some new food.
No worries about the almond milk and fish oil brand. Take your time. I know we all have a life outside of EF. I hope you have a great morning!

Neff, even if you'd have the whole package, which you said you don't, it still not enough. There is a process of learning to feel full. I had an issue with food as a child because I spend my childhood being depressed as a result of being physically, emotionally and spiritually abused by my mother, so I'd lose my appetite. That, even though is not an eating disorder coming from wanting to be thin or heavy, it behaves as such, so I revert to those feelings of being 'comfortable' when hungry. So, when I'd try to eat more food, I was miserable bc I couldn't stand the feeling. I know what you're going through and you don't want to get older without resolving it, because you'll really get comfortable there.
I'd love to help you with that and I could do it privately (not on an open forum). Pm or otherwise.

Myway, I come in and out; that's the only way I can do it.

Ok, the fish oil! Get either Carlson (lemon or orange flavor) or Metagenics fish oil (excellent). If you can't get this in your local health food store, get it online.

Raw Vanilla Almond Milk

1 cup soaked almonds
(Soak in a bowl in the refrigerator overnight and rinse before using)
3 cups water
1 vanilla bean, seeds scooped out
3-5 Hard dates (soak hard dates in water for 1/2 hour or overnight) Start with 3 dates and if its not sweet enough, add more. I usually use 3. Once they're soaked, they get very sweet.

To make raw almond milk blend the soaked almonds with the water until smooth. Then strain the mixture through a sprout bag, cheesecloth, or strainer into a big bowl. Save the almond pulp in a container and put in the refrigerator for later use.

Put the almond milk back into the blender carafe and blend in the vanilla seeds and dates or other sweetener until smooth. This milk will last in the refrigerator for about 3-5 days. Shake well before using. Variation: Blend in a banana and use a pinch of nutmeg to make a festive rawnog.
