Exercises to improve BJJ

Hi all,

I am looking for any information on exercises that will help improve my BJJ game. I know mat time is best way to improve but are there any solo drills ,things that I could do to help improve my fitness and techniques for BJJ. I normally do 5x5 weight training but any additional help is greatly appreciated. My trainer is going away for a few weeks so I don't want stagnate in my training because I am not getting the mat time.

Also I was looking into getting that 'Bas Rutten' training videos ...anyone think it is worthwhile and would help ? Any other training material worth getting ?

Thanks

perform all of the stretching you can do and any core exercise is good..........my main problem is flexibilty.....i dont have much.

I personally disliked heavy bag training. While it made my grip a bit stronger, it made me weaker overall due to the relatively small amount of weight you're moving. You might want to do it as a addition to your regular-weight training, but certainly not a replacement.

A powerlifting-style workout did a lot more for me. Just heavy compound movements. For grip strength I do towel pull-ops, heavy deadlifts and "bash the tree with a hammer". Works a lot better.

heavy squats and deads help with building a strong core ,helped me no end, what I lack in skill I make up for in power

Thanks for all the great info guys. Sorry Jacob, I gotta wait before I can add to your Karma Points again.

Don't worry about it. Post a review of the Kesting video if you get it.

do you know what 'crab walks' or whatever they are called is
basically your down on all fours and keep switching possitions
that helped my top game a lot
I'm a good bit more manuverable from the top then when I started
and I havn't done them that much lately

Ironicly BJJ is also one of the best styles to learn how not to go the ground. Especially in a more vs more-fight, this is always nice.

I can take a class kickboxer to the ground under 5-10 seconds if he doesn't know how to defend against takedowns. It's funny to see the confidence(or should I say arrogance) before the fight and the disbelief after the fight.
